Earthy and Free: 7 Boho Hair Tutorials for Autumn
So the “earthy and free” scene hits its peak during summer’s festival season, but we argue that these boho hairstyles are just as appropriate during the fall months as they are in the sweltering heat of summer. There’s just something about the crispy leaves under your feet, the cableknit sweaters and scarves wrapped around your body, and the plums and golds on your face that make you feel at one with Mother Earth. Today we urge you to channel Gaia with the following boho hair tutorials from some of our favorite hair bloggers.
Half Up Braided Crown
Who doesn’t dig a braided crown? This pretty interpretation by Tegan at the Treasures & Travels blog is an easy one for all hair lengths and textures. We’re thinking you could even dress it up with a gold feather accessory or something equally as earthy in order to play up the “one with Earth” vibe.
Textured Double Pony Tail
Our friend Emily, the super talented hair goddess who runs the Freckled Fox blog, was recently inspired by Dolce & Gabbana’s runway show, which featured this ultra textured double ponytail. We love the volume and carefree spirit of this everyday ‘do — so perfect for those errand-filled weekends or happy hour get togethers with your work buds. Get the deets on her blog.
Mara Hoffman Runway Inspired Hair
Here’s another runway inspired ponytail. This tutorial is by YouTube vlogger Amber Fillerup, who takes her cue from Mara Hoffman. Like the Freckled Fox’s ponytail, this one incorporates a lot of texture and volume. Instead of being high and free-flowing, though, it’s placed at the nape and has a little more structure.
Curly Hair Tutorial
What’s up, Curly Sue? This curly hair tutorial by Hortencia Caires at the Style Feen blog is one of the better ones we’ve come across in recent months. She details her hair regimen and teaches all you curly haired ladies how to embrace and enhance your hair’s natural texture. The results? So, so pretty.
DIY Low Twisted Bun
OnceWed always knocks it out of the park with their hair tutorials, and this DIY Low Twisted Bun is no exception. It’s one of the more “polished” looks in today’s curated post, as you’d expect for a wedding blog, but it still has that casual chic vibe to it that we can’t help but swoon over. There are lots of little things happening with this hairstyle that really push it into gorgeous territory, so check it out.
Effortless Waves Hair Tutorial
YouTube vlogger Marianna Hewitt is the queen of effortless waves and today she’s filling you in on her “perfect hair” secrets. We love this style for everyday events and tasks. With a sparkly gem or other accessories, you could even transform it into something fancier for more formal events.
Feathered Fishtail
This feathered fishtail tutorial is actual one of four that was posted on the Free People blog in a collaboration with hair gurus Heather and Benjamin of Hairroin Salon. We love the tight fishtail braid that’s married with softer top. Get the details on this style and the other three on the Free People blog. Lovin’ these boho hair tutorials? Braids: the braided hairstyles you need in your life right now
The Side Fishtail Braid Tutorial Every Woman Needs
“
Hello lovelies! This is Jennie Kay from TheBeautyPin.com and I am here to tell you that braids aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. Many women are intimidated by braided hairstyles, thinking that they too complicated and difficult to achieve. Lucky for you, I have a gorgeous side fishtail braid tutorial to share that proves otherwise!
This tutorial is easy to follow and the style is so easy to recreate. The fishtail braid has become increasingly popular on the hair trend scene, and this side fishtail braid is definitely a look you want to add to your hair styling arsenal. From casually running errands to a fancy night out on the town, this easy-to-acheive braided style is ALL YOU!
What You Need:
-Curling iron
-Clear elastics
-Hairspray
How to Create the Side Fishtail Braid:
1. Start by curling your entire head with a large barrel curling iron. Work in one to two-inch sections.
2. Gather all of your hair over to the desired side and secure a loose, low side ponytail with a clear elastic.
TIP: Spray the hair in your ponytail with a working hairspray and brush through to give your hair some grit for easier braiding.
3. Split your ponytail into two equal pieces.
4. Take one piece from the left side and pass it to the right side.
5. Then, take one piece from the right side and pass it to the left side.
6. Continue this pattern until you reach your desired length.
TIP: Combine shorter layered pieces with larger pieces.
7. Secure the end of your braid with another clear elastic.
8. Gently tug at sections of the braid to loosen it up and make it appear thicker and softer.
9. Gently pull the first elastic used to create your ponytail away from your hair and carefully snip it off with a pair of scissors.
10. Finish with a few more gentle tugs to fatten your braid and a spritz of hairspray for hold and to tame any pesky flyaways.

QUICK TIP: THICK LASHES
It blows my mind that so many of us don’t do this! Ok, I’ll come back down from my high horse because I too didn’t learn this trick until I went to makeup school at the Makeup Designory (MUD). But it’s a game changer and when you start doing it, you’ll wonder why you too didn’t think of this before! Typically, when we coat our lashes with mascara, we focus on the part that we (and others) can see. But there’s another side that’s getting ignored. The backside. Why bother painting it? Because it thickens the lashes and makes them stiffer and stand more upright. It only takes a tiny bit of extra energy and is worth the 5 seconds. Here’s how:
TOOLS:
- Your Favorite Mascara — Right now I’m obsessed with this one , used on Rachel above because not only does it really coats and separates each lash, it lifts them and holds them up like no other mascara I’ve found before it. I also love this one for those of us on a tighter budget this month.
STEPS:
- Wiggle the wand from root to tip as you typically would on the outside of the lashes.
- Now here’s the trick: look down and coat the lashes on the backside by stroking the wand from root to tip on the side of your lashes that we never see.
- Finish by coating the bottom lashes as well.
