How would you describe this look?

I started off by doing a full head of babylights on this client. I love doing babylights because it offers a seamless grow out and allows clients to look great with not as much upkeep. We glazed her with an icy blonde.

For the style, I used my mini hair crimper after prepping her with my favorite Kenra heat protectant. I enjoy styling with the crimper because it gives a lot of texture and a lot of volume. I also love it because it’s a new and different style.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Go for it! The color has a several month longevity, and the crimper is simple to use. The only tool you’ll need is a mini crimper, a clip, and some bobby pins if desired. The only product you need is a professional heat protectant.

I don’t typically use hairspray with this look, as I love the soft texture the iron gives. It can be worn down, in a bun, or half-up. The style will last a couple of days and can be used simply for volume, texture, or a cool look.

How would you describe this look?

Crimped hairstyles are very on trend right now, so I definitely wanted to incorporate that with this look. I was feeling inspired after New York Fashion Week and wanted to create a fashion-forward, innovative style that no one has seen yet.

How would you describe this look?

I created this look from scratch by applying a custom formulated color, shaping up her cut, and styling. This look is being calm, earthy, and natural with the contradiction of heavy texture. The greatest part of this look is the contrasting colors in the updo. Although the new growth is so dark, the light ends bend into the color and style seamlessly!

Any advice for someone considering it?

I would suggest this look for anyone with fine hair or hair that is too soft to put up easily. Using a micro crimper adds a ton of texture and grit to the hair, allowing you to form it into shapes and pin it up easier without the hair falling down. I believe anyone can pull off this style, regardless of face shape. It’s classy because it’s mainly pulled back at the nape of the neck but edgy because of the crimping. After using a few bobby pins and spraying with hairspray, you won’t have to worry about your hair coming undone, so this is ideal for even the busiest of people!

How would you describe this look?

This hairstyle is fun, dimensional, organic, and even magical. It’s Viking chic with a hint of sparkle!

The best thing is getting the chance to create so much dimension and texture by mixing hair tinsel, crimped and curled hair, and five different braids (fishtail, dutch fishtail, DNA, bubble, and three-strand). No matter where you look there is something going on, although, it’s not overpowering or cluttered.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Have hair that hasn’t been washed for at least a day or two. I find that they hold better and give better grip while trying to get the shape you’re looking for. I’m sure some will disagree but for me, but I find it works best. My advice for this look – rock it!

I styled this using all Unite hair products! I first based it with Unite Liquid Volume for extra control, volume, and long-lasting hold. I finished with Unite Texturiza to control any flyaways but leave the hair light and still feel like hair. Because of the hair tinsel, I turned my curling iron to 320 and left it a few seconds longer than usual for the tinsel to take shape! That’s very important! Hair tinsel will curl, crimp shampoo, and can stay for weeks. It just needs a little extra time in a curling iron on medium heat to hold the shape! I would use the tinsel, crimper, and curls on any hair length, texture or color! For the tinsel – well, you can never go wrong with sparkle!

With this many braids as well as everything else going on, long hair is a huge consideration! If you have fine hair or thin hair, there’s nothing a little product can’t help you with! If you have bangs, they could be straightened, or add some of the diagonal crimps to them. This is definitely a hairstyle I think anyone can rock for any occasion – from a fun and funky wedding hairstyle to an every day “why not” look!

When creating this look we were definitely going for the 90’s nostalgic space girl vibe! I used all Pulp Riot color to create a nice smokey silver root and a slime green color.

The coolest thing about this look is the texture the crimper gives to the hair making it look very unique yet bold with the neon green color.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Go for it! Color is a fun way to change up your look and you can even go for subtle pops of color if you don’t want to make your whole head slime green. I, however, would definitely invest in a stylist who knows what they’re doing as far as lightening the hair as you will need to have your hair lifted for this type of service when doing fashion colors. Also in the hair industry, we are seeing lots of eras coming back full swing and crimped hair is definitely here to stay!

If you want to recreate this space bun crimped look all you’ll need is a teasing comb, some elastics, a crimper (Sam Villa makes a great one), heat protectant (I used hot off the press by Paul Mitchell), and some texture spray (I used Amika texture spray). First, I sectioned two small ponytails at the top of my models head and teased them. Then, I sprayed them with some texture spray and created two space buns. We then heated up the crimper and went to work after spraying the hair with some heat protectant. I sectioned the hair and carefully crimped each piece. If you want to get really fancy with it you can also add glitter or different hair pieces to the space buns. I added small screw in stars from Amazon.

How would you describe this look?

I have a lot of clients who request something edgy and vivid, but also low maintenance. Colored ombres are one of my favorite colors to do. Any of my clients who I apply vivids on, I ask them to purchase Overtone in their shade. (In this case, Extreme Green) A color depositing conditioner lets them maintain the color themselves in the shower, and it’ll last as long as they keep using it! This is a must for any vivid colors!

Be ready to stain a few pillowcases and towels with any bright color, but it’s worth it. I advise clients to keep the base close matching their natural one, so the grow-out is forgiving if they’re not someone who tends to get their hair done very often. Surprisingly, this is a great look for someone with a busy life, that doesn’t have a ton of time for the salon!

This minty fresh pastel is one of my favorite colors to do. Green has always been a favorite color of mine. Any advice for someone considering it?

These color are very high maintenance. Your hair has to be blonde for the vivids to grab on to. For those who have darker hair, lightning sessions are required.

Maintaining the color requires a color care shampoo and conditioner. For example, Eufora’s Bodyfying shampoo has a vibrant color complex which helps extend the life of the color, so I highly recommend it.

With that being said you don’t want to wash your hair often, and dry shampoo is your best friend (Davines hair freshener is my favorite). When you do wash it, make sure to wash it with colder water to retain the color in longer.

How would you describe this look?

This look is casual and unrestrained. The cut and color reflect a modern, easy going, and daring person. The coolest thing about it is how the look speaks directly to her personality. I love how the curls are slightly flyaway and soft and how the color complements her skin tone so nicely.

Her hair was prepped with a leave-in conditioner and hair oil. I like easy styling, as it can be air dried or diffused. After it’s dry, add a little more oil on the ends and a gentle rake through with fingers open wide, starting at the scalp and running them out through the ends, to expand the shape and rough it up a little. I also like pulling small pieces on the surface outward from the ends to enhance the flyaway look.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Firstly prep their hair before their color visit with a treatment like Olaplex #3. Doing several treatments over a few weeks prior to getting their color done and continuing weekly treatments thereafter.

I also recommend a cream cleanser. I love New Wash, for curly hair and color treated hair. It is super gentle on hair color and nourishing to scalp and hair. It seriously helps color stay longer and curls love it. It cleanses and conditions in one step.

Even though the look shouts easy going, the color requires on scalp lightening every 6 weeks. The color will be refreshed at each lightening and could be refreshed between visits if needed.

Since it is a pastel, it will fade more quickly than a deeper hue. Cleansing only once a week or when absolutely necessary is ideal to help the color last longer and help keep the curls from losing necessary oils. Even getting it wet can take a tiny bit of color out each time.

If someone’s hair is chemically damaged or weak, I would not recommend this type of color process.

This is a natural curl that is fine with a medium density. The cut length and shape works well for most face shapes. I think this look is also about the feeling the person gets from wearing it. If they love it and it is suitable for them, then go for it! The bangs are best for someone with a deeper forehead and they are prepared to get them trimmed about every 4 weeks.

I always recommend following your stylist’s recommendations for at home care. Keeping the hair in it’s best condition will do wonders for the longevity of the color and the health of the scalp and hair.

Ash Green

How would you describe this look?

The customer came in with a warm tone. I then figured to put a cool tone which is ash to give it a fresh look, and ash green it is! A warm tone such as red/yellow/orange usually looks bored when you keep it for a long period. Full head color is bored either, hence I decided to do ombre hair for her.

I love the hair cut that I did for her as the long and defined layers add a lightness to her hair that make it much easier to curl and wave on its own. Just a scrunch or two and she is good to go!

Any advice for someone considering it?

Not everyone is able to carry this hair color I would say. One will have to wear makeup to prevent herself from looking pale, as this is a cool tone. Without makeup, it will make you look pale and fair.

Besides that, hair serum and hair mask are a must to make the hair fewer tangles and also to make your hair stay healthy and shinier. Maintenance-wise, wash your dyed hair with sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner after 72 hours, and it is better to use color shampoo for the dyed hair too.

How would you describe this look?

This look is a multidimensional, blue to green balayage. Her roots are actually her natural dark brown color and highlighted to melt into the blue. We used a dark blue, a pure green, and yellow to achieve the melt. I had to take into consideration the amount of color bleeding that would happen during the rinse out, which is why I used yellow on the ends. By the end of the rinse and shampoo, that yellow became the perfect lime green.

For her cut, I did a hairline bob. I felt the graduated layers would work nicely with the color, making the hair stack upon itself. The greatest thing about Julia’s hair is how we can make something that would normally be very high maintenance, into something she can wear for months with it still looking great!

Any advice for someone considering it?

This look is something you have to take care of, use the correct products on, and is expensive to upkeep. Because this look requires the hair to be very light blonde, there are multiple bleaching services required before the green can even go on. The bleach can make the hair fragile, so I suggest regular haircuts, deep treatments, and protein masks at home. I usually suggest anywhere from 6-12 weeks for the next appointment, depending on how your hair holds onto color and how fast it grows.

Julia uses a conditioner that has green pigment in it. That way every time she shampoos, she is getting some color back in there. This look is definitely not for everyone, but can be very fun on the right client! How would you describe this look?

This is a very popular and trending look. It is an ash blonde balayage “look.” Balayage is the actual technique for highlighting in which lightener is hand painted onto the hair for a natural-looking highlighted result.

You can only achieve about 4-6 levels of lift with this technique. In order to achieve the highest level of lift, especially to get to an icy blonde like this photo, I actually used a foiling technique with Oway Hbleach, which is an ammonia-free cream lightener that is more gentle on the hair. After lightening, a combination of melting toners was used to create a more natural blend. Because of its natural blend, it grows out more gracefully than traditional foil highlighting giving a boho, fresh from the beach look.

The cut is a highly textured lob. The layers have been kept on the longer side with weight taken out from the underneath. That allows for a soft, effortless shape that not only grows out gracefully but is also easy to style. I used O&M Surf Bomb, which is a buildable sea salt spray all over her damp hair as well as Oway Glossy nectar, a lightweight rebuilding oil, on her mids-ends before blowdrying. Once dry, I used a 1.25″ curling iron to achieve the natural wave, alternating curling directions, making sure to curl away from the face in the front, while leaving the ends of the hair out of the iron.

Any advice for someone considering it?

It is important to realize what your hair is capable of. The health of the hair is most important.

If you are a dark brunette naturally, it can take many hours and possibly several appointments to achieve this color combination. The internet has made the job of a hair stylist much harder. It is important to have an honest consultation with your stylist to find the best method to achieve realistic goals that are not only in your price range but will also be something you can and will maintain. It is easy to see the finished look online and think that it was an easy process to get there. Not usually the case!

Yes, the first appointment could take 3-7 hrs and be a very expensive appointment, but the maintenance ends up being less work once you get there. You may just need a toner with your next appointment and only need to do the whole process 1-2 times a year. With the style, it can also age through several days without having to shampoo. That is a bonus! It is important to always care for those lightened ends. Shampooing less, while adding an intensive mask and/or protein treatment once a week will be key in at home hair care. Always making sure to use a heat protectant before using heat as well.

How would you describe this look?

This was something new and fun for my guest to do from her everyday norm and what work would allow. We were “foilayage-ing” her hair blonde all summer long and she was ready to go darker for winter. She wanted something fun and vibrant instead of going back brown. She suggested red lowlights.

We at London Calling Salon use Itely Hair Color and they have the most beautiful permanent red hair color line so I was confident no matter which red she picked it would look beautiful. We went with a vibrant Violet Plum lvl 6-7 red and piggybacked it with an Intense Deep lvl 5 red to support the richness of one and intensity of the other all while touching up her highlights and toning them light neutral blonde.

I love the range of creativity of placement (you can make it tasteful for work or really make it stand out depending on how much purple or red you use).

It’s something fun to do with your hair when you work at a business that doesn’t allow “unnatural colors”. It dances on that line just enough to give you something exciting and new without offending anyone at work.

The salon I work at is known in our area for our work with Direct Dyes (Galaxy Hair, Unicorn Hair, etc.) which only a minimal amount of people are actually able to do. So, for our guests that want something fun without being too extreme for work, this is usually something fun to suggest.

As for the cut and style, she did have a short, angled bob for a while and now she is growing it out so I have been texturizing her ends for a softer look (she has very thick hair) and gave her a softer blowout with SexyHair products (their Love Oil and Luxe Blow Out Spray).

Any advice for someone considering it?

First, I would talk about maintenance. With reds, everyone knows they fade a little faster than most, so you have to be a little more mindful of your everyday routine. If you are a person who washes their hair every day I would not suggest you go that route because every time you wash your hair the vibrancy of the red becomes less and less. But if you don’t and decide to do it there are are two things to always keep in mind to keep the colors from fading faster and keeping them vibrant: heat and alcohol.

Try to avoid using a lot of heat (cooler temps for washing, minimal usage of hot tools but when you do, lowering the temps on your hot tools, religiously using heat protectant products). The products I suggest most are Paul Mitchell’s Hot off the Press or SexyHair’s Hot Sexy Hair heat protectant spray.

Avoid products with high amounts of alcohol in them like hairsprays, mousses, etc.. Those will help draw the color out and decrease vibrancy. I tell them to check the ingredients and if alcohol is in the top 3 avoid using or use sparingly.

I think all hair types, faces, and personalities could rock something like this. It’s very beautiful any which way the colors intertwine with each other (curly or straight) and placement is always key to your final look. As for choosing the reds to use, of course always collaborate with your guest on what she/he likes most (violet/reds, red/reds, copper/reds). Understand your color line and don’t be afraid to piggyback colors to support one another to showcase their strong suits and add more dimension. As for the client point of view, I always grab the color swatch book and take the color swatches out and place next to the face to see what compliments the best and run with it.

Like I was saying earlier, this particular look suited her best to give her something new and fun when she was ready to go darker from a highlighted blonde and without being too extreme for work.

How would you describe this look?

I gave this color the name “winter white blonde” because my client, Rachel, looked so great next to the snow we were getting that day. The most important thing for potential clients to consider is that this color does not happen on the first appointment, and the maintenance for it is pretty large.

This was Rachel’s third appointment, and she has been coming every 6-8 weeks. Each appointment is different, always working towards being lighter and brighter, without compromising the integrity of the hair. Rachel has very fine, level 6 hair. She’s not super dark, but the thin density of it requires just a little bit more attention and care.

Hair is at its most fragile when wet as well, which is why I like to do 60% of the haircut wet and finish the rest after a great blow dry. Especially with a color like this, the minor details are key. If you have a great color but the layers are too heavy, it totally overshadows the white blonde you were going for. I gave Rachel some longer layers with a little bit of face framing upfront to really amp up that awesome money piece.

I think the coolest thing about balayage/foilage/hair painting is that no two services are alike. I used mostly foils around Rachel’s hairline to really maximize lightness. But because this was her third appointment and her ends were already pretty light, I used a clay-based lightener on zones two and three to gently lift a little bit more without damaging the cuticle. This is different from her past appointments, where I used only foils or straight balayage. But because she’s wanting to be so light and white, foils ensure a great lift that is easily toned to the end goal. This is different for every client, and especially for darker haired gals. Balayage will always produce a warmer tone, so knowing when to differentiate between techniques to give your client what they want is key, even if that doesn’t look like the hair painting videos they’ve been seeing all over Instagram.

Any advice for someone considering it?

The first thing I tell clients when they show me a picture of a blondie like this is that it’s not going to happen overnight, and it’s not going to be cheap. This picture was taken after Rachel’s third appointment, and she has two more visits scheduled before her wedding in the spring. It’s a slow process, and trusting your stylist is going to give you the most out of your service. They want you to love your hair just as much as they do, and slow and steady always wins the race.

Purple shampoo will be your best friend during the time you wear this color. Amika carries a great line named “Bust Your Brass” that I swear by for all my blondes. Both the shampoo and conditioner are extremely pigmented, so you should only use them once a week to avoid getting a gray hue. Also, any non-professional brand of products can really mess with any color, but especially this one. I know you hear it all the time, but a stylist cannot guarantee any color unless you’re taking care of it properly.

A blonde client using Kenra shampoo is going to have healthier, shiner, and more longevity of the color than a blonde using Pantene. Sulfates and parabens really strip out color and toners, exposing the warm tones underneath. This means you can say bye-bye to your beautiful white blonde hair that you just spent four hours and $150+ on. Stylists plead with you to buy professional products, not for their own gain, but to protect the investment you made into your hair and keep it looking great for a long time.

In terms of hair type, a color like this definitely works best on someone with long hair below their collar bone. Although that doesn’t mean it can’t still be beautiful on a bob, just the effect would be different. However, this would not work on anything shorter than that, as the hair would be too short to create a nice blended gradient into the lighter color. A big tip is to make sure that ashy colors look good on you beforehand! Do you find yourself wearing a lot of blues and greens? Or are reds and browns your go to? Also, take into consideration your eye and eyebrow color. Someone with darker, olive skin with dark eyes and thick eyebrows may not be best suited for a light white color like this one. If you’re unsure, your stylist can help!

Remember, this look takes regular maintenance. A client who doesn’t like to come into the salon more than once a year may be better suited for a color with less upkeep. Though balayage itself is a very low maintenance form of hair color, the tone and placement of this certain scenario require touch-ups often. Be sure your lifestyle suits that before taking the plunge, as your stylist wants you to be completely satisfied with your hair and coming back for more!

This look is as much about being fashionable as it is about being practical. My client is probably about 75% grey so these chunky highlights and lowlights not only bring definition and dimension to her hair, but it’s also super low maintenance since the only demarcation we ever see is on the lowlights.

It’s a great look for a round to square face shapes as the verticality of the highlight placement gives the illusion of lengthening the face and you can further contour by keeping the pieces closest to the face on the sides dark (or darker) for a minimizing effect.

For me and my guest, the chunkiness works in our favor, but for someone with less grey, the look can become high maintenance quickly (think dark roots on blonde chunks). On hair with short layers, it can look quite choppy so it works best for folks with long or no layers and chunkier highlights means more lightener which requires better aftercare to keep it healthy and shiny.

The fun thing about this look is that we actually permed the top portion of her hair to match the rest of her curl pattern, which was much curlier. The cut I would describe as a modern shag and we styled it with a hair diffuser to enhance the curl.

The best thing about a shag is the amount of texture you can create. So for someone with as much hair that my client has in this particular situation, she is able to have lots of movement and volume despite the density of her hair.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Look at pictures of the different types and figure how subtle or extreme you are wanting your look to be. You can really customize a shag to anyone’s face shape and hair texture. So just look at the different shapes and styles of shags. See what your eye is drawn to.

Then think about your natural texture. Are you wanting to air dry or style your hair? A shag will normally enhance your natural texture and be easier to create volume with less effort.

How would you describe this look?

I would call this a curly shag. It’s a fun curly style that makes the fringe the focal point of the cut and eliminates the dreaded “triangle” shape that happens so often when curly hair lays heavy along the perimeter. This cut shifts the weight up, so the client gains volume on top, a lean silhouette along the bottom, and really opens up the face. The cutest thing about it is definitely the fringe! It gives off a very 70s vibe. So many curly girls have been told they “can never have bangs.” Yes, you can!

Any advice for someone considering it?

Embrace your curls (and take care of them)! Curls typically need moisture and hold, so don’t shy away from the product.

To achieve this look we did a Twist Set when the hair was wet and diffused dry. I always advise my curly clients, if you don’t have time to twist all your hair, focus on the front and the top – don’t worry about what’s underneath. Also, if you don’t have a spray bottle, get one. This style can last several days without washing. Use the spray bottle to lightly re-saturate the top and redefine the curls by twisting again – this will help you see defined, separate curls (not one big mass of curl).

This cut would work for anyone!  I would just adjust the length of the fringe based on their face shape – for instance, someone who had a wider face, I would have made the fringe longer and more narrow. Aside from a bang trim between regular appointments, I would recommend the client come back in 8-10 weeks for a full re-shaping.

How would you describe this look?

I love my girl Delilah’s effortless-looking curls. Previously, we’ve kept her hair long so I was so excited when she came in wanting to go shorter. We looked at some round shapes at first but ended up with this shag look because I was inspired by her grown-out bangs. I wanted to clean them up to make them balanced and intentional with the rest of her hair.

Any advice for someone considering it?

I get a lot of young curly-haired girls in my chair who hate their hair and straighten it every day. I get it, curls need extra maintenance and investment that sometimes can be hard. Sometimes, I can win them over to the curly side once I help them find a curly regime and routine that’s right for them.

On Delilah, I put Kevin Murphy’s Killer Curls in her hair when it was sopping wet and combed it through with a wide tooth comb. I cut it wet, and section by section placed it in its style. I wanted her hair to air dry as I worked so I didn’t have to touch it later because messing with the curls dry causes frizz. I diffused it a little, but her curls don’t really need it. I added some KM Killer Waves spray as I diffused.

I recommended KM Motion Lotion for day two curls to revive and refine frizzy curls. It’s literally like face moisturizer but for your hair. Every curl type is different and every curly girl I know has found different products and different routines to make their hair work for them. It’s a process to discover a routine, but I promise it’s worth it.

How would you describe this look?

Lavender is definitely one of my favorite colors, and I love how different lighting affects the color. Sometimes it looks more violet, other times it gives off a silvery hue. This color is beautiful but may not be suited for everyone. It can be hard to achieve if you have darker/denser hair. Because it’s so light, the hair needs to lifted to the lightest blonde to achieve it. Also, being such a light color, it does fade very fast. Color safe hair products (shampoo, conditioner, styling, etc.) can prolong the life of your hair color, as well as filtered water when washing (shower heads, filters, etc.) and reducing the temperature on hot tools to about 325 degrees F.

How would you describe this look?

For this kind of color, you have to lift it up to level 10 or higher. I mix it in between ash grey and lavender. This color looks very good on Asian skin tone.

Any advice for someone considering it?

The hair will look very healthy and soft. Whether your hair is straight or curly, it will still look beautiful. The hair needs to be healthy because it needs to be bleached really light. I like this color very much because when you first get it, the lavender will stay in your hair for about a month (depends on how light your hair is lifted), so you need to use purple shampoo. Slowly it fades to a grey tone, but it’s still lovely.

For the hairstyle, I cut a U-shape so when the hair is down it will still look nice. This cut and color are good for all types of hair and with any style. There isn’t much layer, so any face shape will look good.

This look is a very beautiful vibrant electric purple. It isn’t your ordinary purple. I mixed 3 colors to create this fun unique shade. Looks like these tend to be somewhat high maintenance, so there are a couple things I suggest to get the most out of your salon service.

Use a color safe shampoo and a hydrating conditioner. My favorite is Guy Tang Mydentity My Confidant Shampoo and Conditioner because it cleanses the hair really good and makes your hair feel amazing. Use cool water and the least amount of heat as possible. I suggest using 325 degrees on your hot tools or lower. Definitely, these are the two best things you can do!

I feel like anyone can totally rock this color! Hair color is so fun and really makes you feel so powerful! I suggest this look for someone who is ok with going to be with going to the salon at least every two months.

Smokey Lavender

This is a smokey lavender/lilac hybrid, as I used a few different tones of purple to not only cancel out some brassy tones but to give dimension to the hair as well.

The prettiest thing would have to be the depth that shadows at the root but continues throughout the head in lowlights to give the overall look more dimension and movement.

Any advice for someone considering it?

My best advice is to stay on top of your at-home care if you want this look. It’s definitely a pricey color service, so if you want what it’s worth, invest in your at home products and routine. You have to be dedicated to your hair rituals to keep this look fresh. Definitely keep in mind that any heat we apply to our hair is stripping the color little by little. This goes for any color, but definitely more so for those with pastel tones. That being said, definitely limit your hot tools at home, let your hair air dry if you can, and use a heat protectant every time you are using said hot tools. If you can stand it, wash in cool or cold temperatures as well.

Keracolor is my definite go-to for achieving and keeping this look and keeping the hair healthy at the same time. I highly recommend using the regular conditioner in combination with the purple conditioner at home and mix equal parts to dilute the purple to a more pastel look. Keep up with this every time you wash, or every couple washes, depending on how vibrant you want to keep your hair.

This look is definitely not for anyone who wants a low maintenance color, or for someone who does not wish to invest in take-home products or “hair homework” as I like to call it.

How would you describe this look?

This look is a warm caramel balayage with long shattered layers. One of my favorite things about coloring this technique on dark hair is it gives that brighter look that many dark-haired guests want without a lot of the pitfalls that those same guests struggle with. By staying within 2-3 shades of their natural hair, a more gentle type of hair color can be used, preventing damage, and ensuring gorgeous shiny healthy hair. Also, the soft warm color is usually not only lower maintenance but also avoids the “brassy orange-y” result that is the arch nemesis of so many dark haired guests.

The cut is one of my favorite cuts for long thick hair. It honors the guests desire to “keep it long” while adding that extra fashion-forward edge that some long hair can lack. Keeping a strong perimeter line on the bottom and creating long textured layers throughout the interior allows for movement and removes the bulk. It also allows for those soft beachy waves to be more noticeable. Adding extra pronounced layering around the front to add lift and face-framing finishes off the look!

Any advice for someone considering it?

I would recommend maintaining it every 8-10 weeks. To keep the caramel tone and to avoid slipping into unwanted brassy tone, I highly recommend a sulfate-free blue based shampoo and cooling conditioner (Pureology has an amazing blueing shampoo & conditioner called Strength Cure Best Blonde Line) every other wash once that tone starts showing in the hair. It’s the perfect low maintenance color that works for almost everyone. The cut can be adapted to many different hair types. It adds tons of versatility and can work for almost everyone. If your hair is fine in texture or you don’t have a heavy density, you may need to keep the layers more rounded and less shattered on the ends to avoid looking too sparse. Those guests with thicker or denser heads of hair can do heavier texturizing to remove bulk.

Analyzing face shape is especially important when deciding where to start the face-framing layers in the front. If you are trying to emphasize eyes and cheekbones, starting those face-framing layers between the edge of the eye and upper cheek is best. If you are concerned about drawing attention to the width of the face, it’s best to start those face-framing layers between cheek and chin and make sure they angle away from the face rather than cupping towards it.

How would you describe this look?

When doing a vivid color while naturally having dark hair, it’s always better to start darker. This blue balayage gave my client a clean yet trendy look while keeping the integrity of her dark hair strong and soft like it was before we started.

For some people, this is the best because you basically wash (maybe every 3 days or more) and go for longest lasting results! If you have dark hair consider starting with a dark vivid color at first and work your way more pastel if that’s your end goal, otherwise you risk major hair damage!
