With awards season 2014 heating up, a major trend is understated yet glamorous hair paired with a sophisticated gown that can easily go from the red carpet to everyday hairstyles. Here are a three of the most enviable looks from the 2014 Screen Actors Guild Awards and how to achieve them!
Isla Fisher’s Cascading Waves
Isla’s casual waves were the perfect compliment to her slinky dress and crimson lipstick.
How to Style:
- Prep mid lengths and ends with a texturizing spray.
- Working in medium-sized sections curl hair using a large barrel curling iron.
- Allow hair to cool and gently shake out.
- Create a deep side part.
- Gently tease the bang area.
- Sweep hair over one shoulder.
- Finish style with a flexible hold hairspray.
Recommended Hair Products:
This style is about creating texture and movement. Try Oribe’s Dry Texturizing Spray to help build volume and define the curls.
Styling Tip:
When recreating this look, leave the ends out of the curling iron. By leaving the ends out, you’ll be able to achieve the perfect, slightly imperfect, wave.
Michelle Dockery’s Pint-Sized Pony
Michelle achieved the much sought after perfect ponytail for the SAG awards. Her side-swept bangs perfectly frame her face and the full crown gave her just the right amount of volume and shape.
How to Style:
- Starting with freshly blown out hair, create a deep side part.
- Tease the crown area lightly.
- Using a flat iron, smooth and bend bangs under.
- Pull hair into a low ponytail.
- Smooth ends of ponytail with flat iron.
- Gently pull up on hair in the crown area.
- Finish with a light mist of hairspray.
Product Recommendation:
For long lasting hold, try Aveda’s Air Control. It has a flexible hold with a satin finish.
Cate Blanchett’s Deconstructed Bun
Cate’s deconstructed bun paired with soft face framing layers expertly highlighted her fantastic cheekbones.
How to Style:
- Starting with freshly blow dried hair, prep strands with a light styling crème.
- Create a side part and divide the front from the back.
- Gently backcomb the round of the head down to the occipital bone.
- Pull the back section into a ponytail, just under the occipital bone.
- Divide the front and side sections into two smaller sections.
- Using a large barrel curling iron, lightly curl the sections.
- Pull each section back and bobby pin it to the elastic.
- Lightly backcomb ponytail.
- Wrap ends of ponytail around to form bun.
- Bobby pin bun into place.
- Gently pull on side of bun to loosen.
- Style side-swept bangs and finish with a mist of hairspray.
Product Recommendations:
For a light styling crème with a soft hold and definition, try Verb’s Styling Cream.
Styling Tip:
If you can, try to remove the hair elastic after creating the bun for a looser upstyle. Do this by finding the elastic and sneaking one or two fingers under it. Then use a pair of scissors to cut the elastic. Gently pull out to remove.
