11 Glamorous & Sexy Short Curly Hairstyles

Having short hair is such a freeing thing. You have more time, use less product, you’re cooler in the summer and can toss on a scarf in winter, no problem. The dilemma is what to do with it that’s different and fun. Here are some beautiful options for short curly hairstyles!

  • Playfully Soft Twist

    Style by Tara Walker
Stylist @ Mousey Browne in Sydney, Australia

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This look is soft and sexy with a playful twist. It is the epitome of minimal fuss, maximum hair that you can truly wake up and wear!
My favorite thing about this look is the shape and the fact that it’s designed to work with the natural texture of the hair (curly). It’s manageable and easy to recreate.

Which products would you recommend to help create and maintain this look?

I recommend a cream-based product with a small amount of hold for control and a lightweight water wax for shine and definition. I used Tough Guy Water Wax and Boss Dog Styling Cream, both by Fatboy.

What type of person would this look work best for?

This look is for someone with curly hair and a busy lifestyle. It is for the person who doesn’t have a lot of time to spend on their hair, but would like to wear it out and look sharp.

What’s your best tip for someone who’s considering this look?
Be prepared to work with the natural texture of your hair! If you have a well crafted haircut–a haircut with a beautiful shape that works for your face and your style–it really shouldn’t matter how your hair is behaving on any given day!

  • Disconnected Curly Pixie

Q&A with style creator, Cherise Alexander
Stylist @ Immortal Beloved in Washington, D.C.

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This is a disconnected curly pixie. My favorite thing about it is how little styling is required for it to look fabulous!

Which products would you recommend to help create and maintain this look?

I would recommend a curl cream or curl gel like Oribe’s Curl Control Silkening Creme or Oribe’s Curl Gloss. This look is best air dried, but can also be diffused on high heat/low intensity.

What type of person would this look work best for?

This look works best on someone with naturally curly hair, but can also be achieved on someone with straighter hair if they want to use product to give it texture and hold.

A short hairstyle like this is for someone fun and carefree who doesn’t have a lot of time to spend styling, but also loves to show off their adventurous style and personality!

What’s your best tip for someone who’s considering this look?

Be prepared to get regular touch-ups with this cut! You won’t have to do much styling on a daily basis, but you will need to maintain this look with regular salon visits. The back and sides will grow out fast and the top will get very heavy.

  • Short, Natural Curly Hair

    Style by Alicia Torrens
Owner/Stylist @ Brandon Hairstyling in Brandon, FL

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

Is a young and youthful cut for someone embracing their natural texture. I love the shape and how revived the hair looks with some moisture love and care!

Which products would you recommend to help create and maintain this look?

I highly recommend the Q-Redew handheld steamer, DevaCurl Heaven in Hair Deep Treatment , DevaCurl No Poo Decadence, DevaCurl Cupercream Coconut Styler, and DevaCurl B’Leave In Gel.

What type of person would this look work best for?

This haircut would be suitable type 3 curly hair type 4 coily hair. This is a great haircut for most face shapes. It’s easy to wear and it’s a great wash-and-go look.

What’s your best tip for someone who’s considering this look?

The best tip I can give someone who wants to wear this kind of style is to not be afraid to cut your hair. Hair grows! It’s important for you to take care of your hair — limit heat styling and do regular deep treatments. Use water soluble products and stay away from silicone! Always use a cleanser instead of a shampoo.

  • Modern, Short & Curly Harbinger

    Style by Erin Olson
Deva Certified Curl Specialist/Stylist @ Luna Bella Makeup and Hair in Santa Barbara, CA

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

I would describe this look as a modern harbinger. What I love about it is that it is sophisticated with edge. It’s professional with personality. It is classy and bad ass at the same time. It’s everything a well rounded modern woman needs!

Which products would you recommend to help create and maintain this look?

I love Deva Curl products and always recommend them for my curl friends. I used Deva Curl No-Poo Original and One Condition to hydrate the curls. This look is styled with Deva Curl’s Ultra Defining Gel and B’leave-In to give that killer definition and plump up those rockin’ curls.

What type of person would this look work best for?

I feel strongly this look would appear astonishing for almost any woman wanting a shorter hairstyle with personality and uniqueness. I do really love it for curly girls, yet any texture can rock this look. This hairstyle has so much versatility that it meets your bold businesswoman, your edgy trendsetter, your modern professional, the mature woman who loves style, or the teenage girl in a mood for something different!

What’s your best tip for someone who’s considering this look?

My advice for someone considering this look is to be comfortable with your facial features being highlighted. Have fun with styling and the ease of shorter hair!

  • Curly Lob

Q&A with Style Creator Daisy Giles-U’u

Hairstylist @ Curl Power Salon in Minneapolis, MN

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This cut is a lob (long bob). It is a twist on the Devacut and Devabob that I tailored for this client. She had very long, loose and wavy hair and she wanted to see more curl, so we took off some length and gave her some exaggerated layers.

With it being much longer in the front, it is easier for her to still pull back her hair and it’s a bit more fun than the average bob. My client arrived with limp curls and left with a cut that highlighted her beautiful natural texture!

Which products would you recommend to help create and maintain this look?

Product would be different depending on each client’s hair texture and health. For this hair texture (fine loose curls that need frizz control and assistance holding the natural curl), I recommend Devacurl Frizz Free Volumizing Foam and the Arc Angel Gel. These are lighter products that won’t weigh down loose curls even more.

What type of person would this look work best for?

This look is great for wavy and curly hair, but can be tailored for straight hair with less layers, and can look amazing with locs or twist-outs on highly textured hair. This look can lengthen clients with round faces, and is easy to pull back for active lifestyles because of the longer length of the hair in the front. This look can be worn in a low ponytail, but looks best with the hair down. This is a great cut for clients who aren’t quite ready for something too dramatic, but want something a little different than the average cut.

What’s your best tip for someone who’s considering this look?

This cut works great for clients who don’t mind maintenance and regular cuts. This cut works best when the back is kept short and above the shoulders. When the back gets too long, it doesn’t swing nicely over the shoulders. Wavy clients will need maintenance in two months, curlies in three to four months.

  • Warm Tones

Q&A with Style Creator Chelsea Stockhaus

Hairstylist @ Curl Power Salon in Minneapolis, MN

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

My client came to me with naturally dark brown curls that were a bit overgrown and was looking for a change to brighten up the dreary winter months. We shaped and cropped an adorable pixie cut to bring out her gorgeous facial features and used DevaCurl’s Pintura highlighting method to give her a brighter look that was tailored to her specific curl type. My favorite thing about this look is the confidence it brought her! You can tell she’s feeling fierce and sassy.

Which products would you recommend to help create and maintain this look?

In order to keep curls happy and hydrated at home, I recommend DevaCurl’s Original No-Poo and One Condition for cleansing and conditioning. For the style, we used B’Leave In and Frizz-Free Volumizing Foam by DevaCurl to define and provide volume to her curl clusters.

What type of person would this look work best for?

The best part of a curly cut and Pintura highlighting is that each cut/color is tailored to your specific curl type! This look would be perfect for someone who wants something bright and funky, but a bit more low maintenance . Because of the Pintura highlighting method, it provides an easy grow out and is much more low maintenance than traditional highlighting techniques.

What’s your best tip for someone who’s considering this look?

My advice for someone considering this look it to make sure you have a thorough consultation with your stylist prior to your service to ensure you are on the same page about tone preferences and what will work best for your own personal style.

  • The Perfect Point

    Q&A with Rok Ċ vajger

    Hairstylist @ Subrina Professional

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This is a chic curly look. That is a simple explanation, yet it describes what curly hair is all about. It’s all about the strong shape and the movement of the hair after drying naturally. What I love the most about curly texture or curly hair is the fact that you can really play with the haircutting shapes and techniques during the process of cutting.

Which products would you recommend to help create and maintain this look?

Before I started drying hair, I applied Treatment as a fundamental product to build upon. An amazing product for making timeless curls is Curl Defining Cream. It is not only perfect for creating curls, but also for maintaining the perfect curly look.

What type of person would this look work best for?

I would say this look works best for anyone with naturally curly hair. If you have naturally curly hair, it’s really simple to maintain your everyday curly look.

Having a curly hairstyle is a great way of expressing your funky, easy going and open minded personality. That doesn’t mean that you can’t wear this hairstyle if you are a more business orientated person though. It’s suitable not only for Friday night out, but also as an everyday business look.

I would never limit specific hairstyles with specific face shapes. If a woman knows how to wear a curly hairstyle, then it doesn’t matter what kind of face shape she has.

What’s your best tip for someone who’s considering this look?

Just go for it! You can also wear this straight and sleek or just keep it curly and funky. It’s a hairstyle that is easy to maintain and  looks super cool.

Even though this is hairstyle easy to maintain, you still have to put a bit of an effort into it if you want to make it look good every day. Every morning, put a small amount of styling product for curls onto your wet palm and apply it to the lengths of your hair to refresh your curls. This way you will have flawless hairstyle every day!

  • Tight Curls

Q&A with Style Creator Andrea Neal-Thiesen

Owner @ Union Hair and Skin in Portland, Oregon

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This is a rounded mid-length cut with fringy edges. My favorite thing is the nice flow around the edges. I love the little bits of curl hanging down in some places around the perimeter.

Which products would you recommend to help create and maintain this look?

For this client’s hair type, I used Deva Curl Decadence One Condition and Supercream to style and tame the frizz, but if your hair tends not to be too frizzy naturally I would use Deva’s Light Defining Gel in place of the Supercream. For second, third, fourth day curls, refresh with a spritz of water with some One Condition mixed into it and diffuse for a few minutes to get the curls back into their happy place.

What type of person would this look work best for?

This haircut is great for someone growing out their length and wanting something interesting to do with it as it gets longer. It also works well with any curl type and is really effective at keeping its shape as the hair grows out because of the back hugging in at the curve of the neck.

What’s your best tip for someone who’s considering this look?

Find a curl specialist so they know how to coax out those individual curls instead of breaking them up by texturizing too much or using a razor. If you find a good one, they should walk you through the styling process and make you feel comfortable about how this look would work for your individual face shape and lifestyle needs.

    How To style:

    1. Apply styling product to damp hair and finger style curls, then allow hair to air dry.  If your hair doesn’t like this technique, blow dry it and use a curling iron.
    2. Use a pomade or similar styling product to add definition to ends.
    3. Spray finished style with medium hold hairspray.

    Recommended Products:

For high shine and flexible hold, give Kenra’s Clear Paste 20 a whirl. Gives maximum control with pliable texture.

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

Oval, heart, some round, square, subtle long. Fine to thick density with a little natural texture.

  • Shaggy Curls

Q&A with Style Creator Whitney Morrow

    Hairstylist

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This client came in with a grown out pixie. I really loved the shaggy curls along her hairline, so we kept it! I gave her a close cut nape with top heavy curls and carved out edges.

Which products would you recommend to help create and maintain this look?

A sulfate-free shampoo is a must for keeping curls nourished enough not to frizz, as well as only halfway rinsing out your conditioner. While wet, I applied a marble-sized amount of AG Hair’s Molding Cream and set her under a hooded dryer. You can also air dry! Once dry, I raked my fingers through the hair, pushing it toward the face.

What type of person would this look work best for?

Having a natural curl is what makes this crop easily textured. Any face shape can wear this style if the stylist personalizes it to them. If the client has harsher features, leave the edges longer to soften to them. If the client has a longer face shape, keep the hair a little shorter on top.

This is a great look for brave, carefree girls that want a wash-and-go style.

What’s your best tip for someone who’s considering this look?

You can’t mess up the styling of this look. Just let the curls do what they want! Don’t over style it.

  • Short Layered Super Curly Retro ‘80s Hairstyle

Think Flashdance. Or Footloose. Or any of the other classic movies/tv shows that came out in the 1980s.  Hair was big with curls, dramatic bangs, a little feathering…  Why not bring an old style back with a little more class?  Quality products give hair a healthier glow and better hot tools help preserve hair from excess damage.

    short layered curls
    short layered curls 2

    How To style:

    1. Add styling product to towel dried hair and blow dry using a larger round brush for top layers.
    2. Tiny curling iron works to create little curls in back and on sides.  Use it only for the ends of the top layers.
    3. Pull fingers through the curls to break them up and add more fullness.
    4. Spray finished style with firm hold hairspray.

    Recommended Products:

Joico JoiWhip for a firm hold. Gives you shine, body and control.  Also has UV protectants that “condition (your hair) and protect against daily environmental stress.”

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

Oval, heart, square, round or long.  Fine to thick density with any natural texture.

    Tip:

You can get a style like this with little to no heat at all!  Use smaller perm rods (don’t forget the little papers for the ends!) while hair is damp throughout the back and sides, only curling the ends from the front and top.  After hair is dry, you’ll have the curls without having to worry about the heat damage.
