I think red/burgundy/warm tones are so versatile! A woman with a lighter or a tan complexion can pull this color off, which means all hair types can wear it as well.
As for styling, I like to create loose waves in alternating directions (I use a 1 1/4-inch barrel iron), then comb them out with my fingers to loosen them up. I always use this styling technique when styling ombrés or fashion colors because it really compliments the color work.
What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this look?
When it comes to maintaining hair color (especially fashion colors like red, blue, purple, etc), there are many factors that go into the upkeep that I send all of my clients home with. Not washing your hair every day (and washing with cold water when you do) and using dry shampoo plays a huge role in color maintenance! Leaving the hair’s natural oils is healthy and washing with cold water prevents the color from washing out so quickly.
I sent this particular client home with an extreme red and orange color wash to replenish the hair color and prevent the hair color from looking washed out and faded. I advise clients to start cleansing with the color wash when they wash their hair (post color appointment) for the first time as opposed to using it when the red/orange is already faded.
If the client doesn’t have a fashion color, using sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner is perfect for color treated hair. Many of the products that do contain sulfate strip out the hair color along with other essential hair oils, which then leads to hair looking and feeling dry. Lastly, try not to use hot tools every single day. Heat really makes the color fade!

Aftercare should consist of sulfate-free shampoo and not washing every day. Red is a very difficult color to maintain and is prone to quick fading, so less washing means less fading. Use dry shampoos on your non-wash days.

Darker complexions like that of African Americans, Indians, and Latinas pull off this shade well too. Any hair type can pull off this color. I personally think curled hair, whether naturally curly or curled with an iron, looks best because the colors enhance the texture of the hair.
What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this color/style?
If you’re looking for a similar color combination, it’s best to leave it to a professional. This client comes in for a root touch up every four to five weeks which helps maintain the rich burgundy base. We recently added highlights, which required pre-lightening to a light blonde, then applying the final purple color to those pieces on clean dry hair. What’s great about it is that my client can keep adding more purple to create more dimension, or if she gets tired of it, we can let them fade out and try a new color. It’s important to invest in a deep conditioner and use it once a week to maintain the hair’s health, softness and elasticity.

The client that I did this look on had fair skin, but a natural level 6½ hair. I think if she had a lighter natural level it may have washed her out. Olive skin tones look great in this color too! This color looks great on any length, but looks best on thicker hair.

My best tip for recreating the color would be to pre-lighten if you want a more vivid outcome and overlap the root color and the burgundy. I recommend Outshine by Redken before you blow dry and a little bit after. It’s the perfect product to defrizz and it adds just the right amount of shine. I also like to put a violet toning conditioner on all my wine-haired babes. I leave it on for about five minutes. I like how the violet brings out the purple tones in the color. For that I definitely recommend Blonde Angel by Kevin Murphy. It’s the best!

Burgundy works well as a balayage on darker hair colors. As a all over root to end burgundy, I think that it looks best on ladies with warmer skin tones. It complements the skin so well it’s like your constantly glowing.

To achieve this look, I balayaged her hair using Wella’s Blondor hair lightener, and then deposited a customized formula using the Keune color line. Keune makes red boosters that you can put into your color that I absolutely love. I used a 1-inch curling iron to create the texture in her hair after blow drying some of Unite’s Boosta Spray into her hair.
Which skin tones and hair types can pull off this color/style combo best?
The great thing about this look is how versatile it is. My client has sort of an olive skin tone and it looked amazing with her complexion, but it can really be worn in any skin tone.
What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this color/style?To recreate the style, I would recommend using a 1 or 1 1/2-inch curling iron (I used a Hot Tools Marcel iron). Starting at a half an inch from the scalp, wrap the hair around the iron, leaving the ends out. After curling, run your fingers through the waves to diffuse the look.
As far as maintaining the color, my best advice would be to wash your hair in cooler temperatures and wash every other day or every couple of days to prevent fading. Tressa Watercolors Shampoo is a color depositing shampoo that comes in a variety of different colors that you can use to help the color last as well.

The great thing about this hair color is that any skin tone can pull it off from. If you have acne prone skin or have a lot of red pigmentation, I would stay away from being a red head all together because red hair could enhance the redness in your skin. What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this color/style?
Burgundy can be a hard color to maintain. After your appointment, buy a color depositing shampoo and conditioner for redheads. This will help prevent your color from fading while keeping it vibrant between salon visits.
A great tip to keep any color from from fading is to wash your hair with cool water. Hot water opens up the cuticle and can result in the color bleeding. Using cool water keeps the cuticle sealed while making your hair nice and shiny.
When it’s time to style you hair, you want to add a thermal protection product to keep your hair healthy while heat styling. Rough dry your hair 80%, then go over it with a round brush to smooth out the strands. When you are done, grab a 1 1/4-inch curling iron or wand and, starting at the mid shaft, wrap sections around the iron and hold for a few seconds. When you feel the hair is nice and hot, let the curl fall and grab it and pull down for about three seconds to create a long, loose wave. This technique is great to create those sexy beachy waves. You can finish off with a texture spray that will give you a flexible hold while giving you great texture and volume.

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?
This is a smokey merlot balayage. My favorite thing about this look is that it is relatively low maintenance as far as the color upkeep. It is a great way to play around with some brighter pops of color while still maintaining a natural looking root! I also love styling the hair in loose, messy waves. The style looks better the messier it gets, so you can just spray in some dry shampoo and go!
Which products would you recommend for this look?
To maintain bright colors (any reds, pinks, purples, etc.), I love the Celeb Luxury line of color washes. It is a highly pigmented shampoo that I tell my clients to use once a week in order to prevent fading. For a regular shampoo/conditioner, I swear by the Framesi Color Lover line. It is sulfate-free, which is super important in maintaining color because sulfates are too harsh and pull the color out quicker. I cannot recommend Olaplex #3 enough for a take home treatment. Olaplex repairs the broken disulfide bonds in the hair, and this is crucial as far as aftercare of the hair goes.
To style this client’s hair, I used Framesi Color Lover Flash Dry Spray as my heat protectant, Davines Blow-Dry Primer at the root for volume, a bit of Moroccan Oil on the ends for shine, and some sprays of Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray for that messy, imperfect wave. I finished the look with Moroccan Oil Strong Hold Hairspray.
Which skin tones and hair types can pull off this color/style combo best?
My client in the photo is fair with an olive undertone, but I honestly feel that cool undertones and darker toned skin can also pull off a merlot/burgundy color. It’s very versatile, and I think you can adjust your formula to bring out more cool tones or darken the tone if needed. I like color melts because the root generally stays very close to the natural color which makes a much easier transition to the bright color. The hair in the photo is very coarse and obviously long, but I do think the color can work on finer hair or shorter hair, you would just tweak the placement of the color.
What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this color/style?My best tip to recreate the color is to balayage or hand paint the hair and process it to a level 7/8. Melt a dark brown color from the root to about the tip of the ear. Rinse, Olaplaex, and blow dry. Apply Wella Colortouch 1and1/2 oz. of 6/45 with 1/2oz of 44/65 and a ribbon of /68 and 6 volume processing solution. Process for 20-25 minutes, rinse, Olaplaex again, cut in long interior layers, and blow dry!
To maintain the color I recommend only washing the hair two to three times a week, use a sulfate-free shampoo and/or a color depositing shampoo once a week. Rinse with cold water, and for added elasticity and shine, use Olaplex #3 once a week. Every three to four months you can go to your colorist for a glaze with formula listed above.
To maintain the style, get a good trim every six to eight weeks, ask for interior layers for movement, and angles starting one inch below the chin. To recreate these waves, I used a 1 1/2-inch barrel curling iron from Hot Tools at 375, and wrapped sections away from the face in front, leaving an inch out on the ends. I alternated sections going toward and away from the face, always leaving the ends out. This is what gives it an undone and not too perfect wave. Run a bit of oil through the ends to smooth it, then give a quick spray of Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray at the root, and voila! Beauty and sexy waves!

Because the color has warmth from the red and coolness from the violet, it will flatter most people.

Recreating this color really depends on your current hair situation. Always bring in pictures to show your stylist things you like and don’t like so you’re both on the same page before starting. To maintain this look I recommend coming into the salon for regular retouches/refreshers every four to eight weeks. Also try using dry shampoo between washes to extend the life of your color!

There are beach waves on a slight A-line bob with a burgundy balayage hair color. My favorite thing about this look is how multidimensional this color is and how the color itself makes the hair look textured.

When styling, I used Mythic Oil for shine and softness and layered IGK’s Car Service Blowout Balm for smoothness. I round brushed and twisted each section into beachy waves using small round brush, then finished look off with IGK’s Beach Club Texture spray for piecey separation and texture at roots.

What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this color/style?
To recreate this color, start out with a level 5-6 brunette and balayage highlights to add dimension, lifting only to level 8. Shadow root with 4.8 Mocha in Diarichesse L’Oréal Professional Color, then glaze with Diarichesse 4.26 Aubergine. The shadow root will give depth while the balayage highlights will add texture and dimension. To maintain this color I recommend glazing every four to six weeks with Diarichesse 4.26 Aubergine on damp hair and only using color-safe products.

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?
This is a fun and bold transition from natural virgin hair to a vibrant, cool base burgundy. I love the versatility of this look.
Which products would you recommend for this look?The products I used were, Blondor Powder Bleach by Wella and L’Oréal Hair Color in cherry and deep red. To lighten the hair I used a 30 vol developer and a balayage technique. Then I applied the L’Oréal Hair Color with a 20 vol developer.
Which skin tones and hair types can pull off this color/style combo best?
All skin tones can pull off this color and style, however a olive or yellow undertone can compliment the look well.
What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this color/style?
Use sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners and always wash with cool or lukewarm water. Use a leave-in conditioner, too! It’s also very important to apply a heat protectant before doing any and all heat styling.
