Master the Half Up Side Fishtail Braid in 3 Easy Steps

It’s the height of summer, which means a few things for your hair. First of all, you want to keep it out of your face when you can, lest you end up with a sticky, matted mess of strands against the side of your head. Summer (and fall) music festivals also lend themselves to more carefree and bohemian inspired ‘dos.

We feel like this half up side fishtail braid fits the bill splendidly. It can be recreated with medium to long hair, and all you need is a couple bobby pins and some clear elastics. The video below goes into more depth, especially where creating the actual fishtail braid is concerned, so make sure you check it out to get all your questions answered.

How to Master the Half Up Side Fishtail Braid:

1. Begin by gathering two sections of hair from either side of your head and securing them off-to-the-side with a clear elastic. As you gather the section of hair that travels to the other side of your head, pick up a little hair along the way and slightly twist it. For a better visual or more guidance, check out the video below.

2. Next, you’re going to create your side fishtail braid. You can find a more in-depth tutorials online, but we give you a little recap in the video, as well. The gist of a fishtail braid: divide hair into two sections.

Pull a small piece of hair from the outside of Section A and place it with Section B. Repeat on the other side, then keep going back and forth. Fishtail braids take longer to create than a regular braid, but in many ways it’s actually simpler.

Once you’ve created your fishtail braid and secured it with a second elastic, grab a small section of hair from underneath the base.

3. Wrap that small piece of hair around the elastic. Keep wrapping around as many times as it takes, then secure with two criss-crossed bobby pins. This wrapping action will conceal the elastic, giving you a softer and more romantic feel to the entire hairstyle. You can also use bobby pins to keep your hair to one side.

Tip: Try different textures with this hairstyle! We kept things loose and wavy, but you could do tighter curls or more of a textured look via a beach-hair spray.
