Purple Hair: The Best Shades of Purple Hair in 2017

Purple hair is IN, ladies! As one of the only fashion colors that can truly flatter any skin tone, purple hair colors are fashionable, beautiful, and easier to achieve than you might think. This collection will show you a variety of purple hair ideas, and we just know you’ll find your favorite. Happy coloring!

  • Purple Romance

Q&A with Style Creator Amber Archibeque
Hairstylist @ D’ambrosio Design Hair Studio in Albuquerque, NM

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would describe this look as an edgy, purple, romantic look. My favorite thing out this look is how seamless it comes together and how vibrant the colors are!

What products do you recommend to create and maintain this look?

I used Olapex to help maintain the hair’s integrity while lifting and I used the one and only Pulp Riot color to achieve this perfect blend. Dry shampoo will be life saver for this color because the less you wash, the longer the vibrancy!

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

People tend to be scared of looks like this, but I think they look great on every tone and hair type as long as the wearer is confident. This look is ideal for someone that likes spending time and money in a salon!

  • Purple Melt

Q&A with Style Creator Patrick Garcia
    Hairstylist and Colorist

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This is a purple melt. It is a mixture of different shades of purple fading into softer ones to give it a dimensional and fun look. My favorite thing about this look is that it’s something colorful, but also soft and very fashionable.

What products do you recommend to create and maintain this look?

We used Pulpriot hair color for this look. After the first appointment, I recommend you see your stylist every three to four weeks to keep the color fresh and beautiful. I also recommend a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner and cold water when rinsing your hair as it will help minimize color fade. This, paired with a heat protectant, will increase the longevity of the color.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I would recommend this for anyone who wants to go out of their comfort zone and try something new! It’s soft, yet colorful. It’s a great start for people who want to join the colorful side! As far as skin tones go, I’ll say that as long as you have the confidence and the attitude, you can pull off any color no matter what your skin tone is!

  • Balayaged Purple

Q&A with Style Creator Christina Gonzales
    Hairstylist

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This a balayaged purple on blonde ends. My favorite thing about it is the way it beautifully transitions from the blonde to purple and the tone of purple that I used.

What products do you recommend to create and maintain this look?

If your hair is not already lightened or naturally blonde, then I would recommend lightening it first if you have darker hair. I use Blondor Wella Lightener. I also recommend a good vivid color brand like Joico, Pravana or Kenra. I used Kenra’s violet direct dye to achieve this look. It was the perfect tone of purple that I wanted to achieve, not too dark not too light.

Maintenance is very important when it comes to fun colors like this. I tell my clients not to wash their hair every day but when they do, to use cool water. You will also need to buy a color care shampoo and conditioner to help maintain the color.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

Because the purple I used is not too dark or too light, this color actually works on almost anyone. If the purple was darker or lighter, then it might be different considering the warmth or coolness in skin tones. As far as lifestyle, I would recommend this to someone that loves fun colors and is willing to keep up with the maintenance.

  • Purple Passion

Q&A with Style Creator Christine Chavez
Owner @ Christine Chavez Hair in West Hollywood, CA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I always joke that purple hair is the “gateway drug” for women who are thinking of being more adventurous with their hair color. The color is so versatile for all skin tones, so it’s a safe zone for someone wanting to jump into a more fun vivid color. I am a big fan of it!

What products do you recommend to create and maintain this look?

I recommend my clients use a sulfate-free shampoo, preferably B3 from the Brazilian Bond Builder line. It smells amazing! I also custom make a color conditioner for them to take home in order to maintain the color longer.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I think purple can work for all hair types, textures and skin tones. I can customize the tone of purple I use on each client. For example, I would use a deeper more velvet purple on a darker skin tone and a more lavender pastel tone for a client with a fair skin tone. It can be a highlighted for a more subtle effect, or it can be bold and a solid al lover variation of purple tones.

Lifestyle is a big question I ask because if my client isn’t into maintenance, any vivid color is probably not the way to go. Coming into the salon every four to six weeks is vital to maintaining a rich vibrant color, even with the color conditioner used at home.

  • Mermaid Waves

Q&A with Style Creator Diane Ellis
    Master Hairstylist & Colorist

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This is a classic layered bob, and the beautiful color is a mermaid look with vivid colors. My favorite thing about this particular look is that it is fun, edgy, classic and playful all in one. The beachy waves illuminate the combination of the purple amethysts and sapphire blues of Joico Vivids that were applied to her hair.

What products do you recommend to create and maintain this look?

I would suggest shampooing with right shampoos weekly to keep your color fresh for quick maintenance in between salon visits. I really love Matrix and Redken products! I also love using their shampoos conditioners and styling products.

I am crazy about It’s a 10 leave-in spray conditioner after you shampoo the hair and before styling. My fave hairspray is Big and Sexy Spray and Play. I sectioned the hair and used a 2-inch curling iron to curl, then followed with the Spray and Play. I let it set for a few minutes, then ran my fingers through to create that playful style.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

The classic layered bob is a great look for all ages. The beauty of the bob is that it is age appropriate for everyone. You can leave it straight, or for a more formal or going out on the town look, you can dress it up with a curling iron.

The mermaid color is very fashionable, fun, edgy and playful, yet easy on the eyes. However, be prepared for frequent salon visits at least every three to four weeks to freshen your vivid color to perfection.

  • Lilac Dream

Q&A with Style Creator Diana Keyes
    Hairstylist

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I call this one “Lilac Dream.” I love the dimension I was able to create using Joico and Pulp Riot. My client came in with a specific request and it’s always so rewarding to be able to give someone something they absolutely fall in love with.

What products do you recommend to create and maintain this look?

I recommend using a custom color conditioner to help freshen up the color in between hair appointments. A color-safe shampoo and conditioner that are sulfate-free and a good dry shampoo are always your best friend!

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I would recommend this look to anyone who is ready for the high maintenance that it comes with, meaning using the right products and knowing that it will fade over time. I also recommend it to anyone who is prepared to make a trip to see their stylist every four to six weeks.

  • Vividly Purple

Q&A with Style Creator Rachel Rachel Karram Perkoski
Hairstylist @ Back Bay in Boca Raton, FL

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I love this look for people who want to try vivids without a huge commitment. This client had previously lightened ends, so we just brought up her balayage in a very natural and beautifully blended way that allowed for these gorgeous pops of color without the dull commitment of bleaching the hair into a blank canvas.

If she wanted, this color could just fade out gradually overtime back to natural balayage. (Purple is the best color for that!) It fades out to lighter and brighter, then eventually to beautiful pastels that the blonde will begin to peak through.

What products do you recommend to create and maintain this look?

For colorists, I used half clay based lightener, half regular, with Olaplex and Trionics Higher and Higher enzyme developer for the highest lift with the least damage. I did a teasing balayage in foils for a brighter, seamless blend. I overlaid the balayage with a mix of Pulp Riot and Joico direct dyes.

For clients, I would definitely recommend at home Olaplex #3 treatments. I also recommend only shampooing one to two times per week with a color-safe or color-depositing shampoo and cold water. This look is an investment financially and time wise and should be treated with great care to get it to last as long as possible. I also recommend using lots of conditioning treatments and only styling with low heat.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This color (or a version of it) would look great on almost everyone! You just have to make sure that you are cool with the time and money commitment, as well as cold shampoos and minimal heat styling. This look is not a good idea for people who wash their hair every day or who love to flat iron.

  • Multi-Toned Violet Ombrè

Q&A with Style Creator Julie Feldman
Hairstylist @ Chips Salon & Hair Spa Freehold, NJ

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This is a multi-toned violet ombrè. I absolute love the vibrancy of this look!

What products do you recommend to create and maintain this look?

I used Pulp Riot to create this hair color! Pulp Riot hair color maximizes how creative I can get with colors and it’s so long-lasting. I recommend a color-safe and sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner to effectively maintain the vibrancy and longevity of a look like this.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This look is perfect for anyone looking to try something fun. It is especially great for anyone who loves to change up their look frequently from one fantasy color to another.

  • On the Edge of Purple

Q&A with Style Creator Sara Bierman
Hairstylist @ LUXE Salon in Appleton, WI

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This is a subtle yet edgy way to spice up your color. While everyone may not be able to have purple hair, this is a fun way of getting that edge, yet still keeping it fresh and modern.

What products do you recommend to create and maintain this look?

For styling I used Redken Root Lift in wet hair at her base, Redken Align through the ends, as well as Pureology Hydrate Shine Max.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I think this is a great look for someone wanting something different but may have restrictions due to work, etc. It’s a easy and subtle way to add some eye popping dimension to your hair. I feel that throwing purple in with the other highlights and lowlights works well with most all skin tones because it acts as a beautiful accent piece.

  • Amethyst Sunset

Q&A with Style Creator Melanie Pardue
    Hairstylist @ Styla Studio Salons

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would describe this look as an “amethyst sunset”. I have a love for naturally occurring gems and I have a lot of fun recreating them through hair. My favorite thing about this look is the way all of the colors melt and play off each other.

What products do you recommend to create and maintain this look?

I would recommend Joico Intensities or Pulp Riot semi permanent fashion colors. I use both in my salon and love the longevity, they way they apply, and how they make the hair shine!

To maintain fashion colors, I recommend L’anza Color Guard (I also use their color attach 1 and 2 with each fashion color process I do) to help fight color loss while washing, as well as their color preserving shampoo and conditioner.
While I’m working with my client, I go through their daily hair routine and tell them the dos and don’ts.

    1. Cold water rinse
    2. Minimal washing for color longevity (rinse and condition only)
    2. Low heat styling (if at all)
    3. DRY SHAMPOO

I have a client that follows these rules to a “T”. I see her every four months and she still has bright hair!

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

Most fashion colors I do are on medium to thick hair. I feel that those hair types can withstand the process a lot better than fine hair. Fashion colors really are for all skin tones, it just depends on the combinations you’re working with. The possibilities are endless!

Most clients that wear the fun, pop color hair have very expressive and outgoing personalties. It can be a conversation starter and your hair is one of the first things people notice, especially when it’s fun and bright. If you want to get out of a shy bubble, this is really a way to get people talking!

  • Pinkish Purple

Q&A with Style Creator Kelly Marsden
Hairstylist @ Glo Hair Company in Lancashire, UK

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would describe this look as current, fun, “out there” and unique. This client wanted a fresh modern look and she is someone who likes to stand out in a crowd.

What products do you recommend to create and maintain this look?

This look was created by using Joico Intensity colors blended into one another, taking orange segment sections and melting them into the pastels, not forgetting our little secret ingredient of Olaplex, of course.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This color is not for someone who doesn’t keep up with maintenance because pastels can fade and need a lot of TLC. It is important to use the correct aftercare products like sulfate-free shampoos, etc.

  • My Little Purple Pony

Q&A with Style Creator Jason Mitchley
Hair Color Wizard @ Isaac Roberts Salon in San Diego, CA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

The client wearing this said she wanted all of the purples! She is a comic book artist for Jem and My Little Pony.

What products do you recommend to create and maintain this look?

To create this look, I used Schwarzkopf Royal for her base, 4-29 and 0-99 w/20 volume. The hair was painted with Schwarzkopf Blondme 20 volume in an irregular pattern and processed to pale yellow. I then used diagonal back sections and appliedSchwarzkopf 8-29 w/0-11, Pulp Riot jam and Joico Indigo with Cobalt. I curled her by wrapping the hair around a large barrel iron.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This look definitely complements cooler skin tones, but could really be worn by anyone. Confidence is everything!

  • Brownish Purple

Q&A with Style Creator Anthea Allsep
Hairstylist @ Hair By Anthea in Hastings, Australia

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This is an edgy, fun and funky look. My favorite thing about it is the different tones. I love the combination of the purple and the dark brown, as well as the texture created from the cut.

What products do you recommend to create and maintain this look?

This particular client has a fair amount of fine hair, so I used products from our range of Eleven products. The I Want Body shampoo helps create volume, and the I Want Body conditioner is lightweight, won’t weigh hair down and leaves it feeling amazing.

I believe that clients don’t need a huge range of products to get what they want out of their hair. From the same product line mentioned above, I used the I Want Body mist. Is is a lightweight mist spray that creates texture and the feeling of thicker hair on those fine haired clients. The With Volume powder allows you to create volume without weighing the hair down and feeling like you have loads of product in the hair.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend this look for clients who have a finer, straight hair texture and don’t have a lot of time to maintain, but want to have fun at the same time. I wouldn’t recommend this color for pale skinned clients, only for clients with a slightly dark to darker complexion.

  • Vio-Luscious

Q&A with Style Creator Shaun Critchley
Hairstylist @ JuJu Hair Lounge in Vancouver, BC, Canada

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I could describe it as a vio-luscious (vibrant and luscious) plum! I love the fact that it works well with her natural hair color and has such a nice blend. Her hair fades beautifully into this vibrant waterfall of grape juice.

What products do you recommend to create and maintain this look?

I am a huge fan of using Milkshake Silver Shine Shampoo. I find that you don’t need to just be a platinum blonde to use that specific product. Obviously, using a color treated shampoo and conditioner always helps as well, along with using the Milkshake 12 Effects leave-in treatment.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

Most hair types go well with a vibrant purple, however I find that finer haired clients or blondes tend to have a better effect of vibrancy. Really anyone could pull this look off though! With long hair or short hair, there really is no going wrong with this grape juice hue. The type of client clearly depends on what is allowed in their workplace, but from what I am noticing these days, most people love taking a risk! So why not do it?

  • Purple Pastel

Q&A with Style Creator Simone Ho-Sang
Hairstylist & Colorist @ The Glam Lounge Salon in Ft. Lauderdale, FL

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This look is perfect for spring! The pastel colors mixed with the metallics are trendy, edgy and fun. What I love most about this creation is the harmony of the colors that were used (soft lilacs, icy purple, deep violets) It has both a softness and an edginess to it.

What products do you recommend to create and maintain this look?

To recreate this look, I definitely recommend using the Joico Intensity and Metallic line. The pigment payoff for the colors is beyond amazing! For maintenance of the vibrancy, it is recommended to use shampoos for color treated hair. Follow up with a nourishing moisture conditioner to keep the hair soft. You can use your favorite soft hold spray to create a spiked pixie.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I think any client can pull this off honestly, especially if she has the attitude and confidence to carry it! This look is perfect for the client who dares to be BOLD.

  • Bright Purple Hair

Q&A with Style Creator Tiffany Crocenzi
Owner/Hairstylist @ Shear Terror in Phoenix, AZ

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This was a color correction. First we had to bleach out all of her old color, then we had to counteract the colors left in her hair to achieve something close to what we are aiming for. It will take another round to get this color perfect, but I think for round one it turned out great!

What products do you recommend to create and maintain this look?

I used B3 and Redken bleach. The vivid line I used was Pulp Riot.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This look is great for someone who is wanting to get away from the darker colors and wants to try out vivids. The darker and lighter tones can look great on most skin types.

  • Smokey Purple

Q&A with Style Creator Ariana Simoes
Hairstylist & Makeup Artist @ Styling Company in Belmar, NJ

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This is a smoky purple. The vibrant color is fun and exciting!

What products do you recommend to create and maintain this look?

I used Pulp Riot to create this look! The color I used is called Eggplant. The best way to maintain this look would be to use a sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo and conditioner. My favorite is made by Kevin Murphy and is called Hydrate Me. The products smell amazing and leave your color lasting for weeks!

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I would recommend this look for any type of client that is fashion forward. This purple hair can enhance any outfit! Anyone in the creative industry can rock this look. It also can work in the professional world because the smoky look is not overly edgy.

  • Jewel-Toned Purple

Q&A with Style Creator Christine McMillen
Hairstylist @ Pembley Salon in New York, NY

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This look is an amethyst, jewel-toned purple! I love how the textured cut accentuates the different ribbons of color throughout the hair.

What products do you recommend to create and maintain this look?

I created this look using Wella and Pulp Riot colors. My favorite way to maintain fashion colors is by having your stylist mix some of your color in with your favorite conditioner or Olaplex. You can use this at home to deposit little bits of color every time you wash!

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

All fashion colors work better on guests that already have a light brown or lighter blonde natural base. In order to achieve fashion colors, the hair has to be stripped to a pale blonde prior to applying the color, so it is less damaging if you aren’t trying to get here from a very dark starting point.

This purple in particular is on the deeper side however, so the hair wouldn’t have to be as light as it would have to be if we wanted a pale purple, so it can definitely work on a variety of people! That being said, I would certainly not recommend this or any fashion color on someone that does not like to put any work into their hair. It is going to require at home maintenance and in salon glosses periodically.

As for skin tone, according to the rules a violet color will look best on cool-toned people, whereas a peachy color would look best on warm skin tones. However, in my personal opinion, you can’t really go wrong with fashion colors since they’re so obviously fake to begin with. We aren’t trying to fool anyone here!

  • Multi-Tonal Amethyst Balayage

Q&A with Style Creators Kayla Z & Carole Lemire
Salon Owner and Hairstylist @ Soho Master Hair Stylists in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This is a multi-tonal amethyst balayage. My favorite part about it is the dimension from the vibrant purple tones and how it blends seamlessly with her root.

What products do you recommend to create and maintain this look?

I used Blondor and 30vol to prelighten her, and then used Pulp Riot in Jam and Eggplant for the purple ribbons. I put R+Co One Prep Spray all over and R+Co High Dive on the ends. Then I styled her with a large, 2-inch curling Iron and used R+Co Outerspace Hairspray to set the curl. I also made her a custom Evo Fabuloso Color Conditioner so she can maintain the purple at home!

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This is a great color for someone with naturally dark hair as it looks great with a darker contrast root. It would look great on most skin tones as the violet is not overly cool or warm. Because the hair has to be lightened quite a bit for vivid colors, the hair has to be healthy and preferably virgin before one of these colors can be done.

  • Dusty Lilac

Q&A with Style Creator Amber Moyer
Salon Owner @ Shear Envy Salon in Tupelo, MS

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This color melt from a smoky velvet into the dusty lilac creates a soft approach to fashion colors! This look conveys how wearable and trendy fantasy color can be.

What products do you recommend to create and maintain this look?

I used a combination of Pulp Riot fashion colors to create this look, as well as Olaplex. These colors have an amazing consistency and are packed full of conditioners to ensure that the integrity of your hair is not compromised. I recommend that clients use sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners to maintain their fashion colors. My personal favorites are Sudzz Cashmere and Aquafix. I also recommend washing very infrequently in the coldest water you can bear!

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This creation is for the free spirited, daring individual. Pulp Riot colors are so interchangeable that you can custom create a shade for any type of complexion.

  • Unicorn Dreams

Q&A with Style Creators Otey Muniz (New Vintage Studio Salon) and Esther Barreto (Proper Kutz)
Owner and Hairstylist’s in Hermiston, OR

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

We describe this look as a cotton candy swirl and unicorn dreams! Esther’s favorite part is how well the colors look together. My favorite part is the dimension and how the curls make the colors pop. But really, we love it all!

What products do you recommend to create and maintain this look?

We both highly recommend Pulp Riot for fashion colors because we love how long-lasting their colors are and the creamy consistency. For maintenance, we recommend minimal shampooing along with a quality sulfate-free shampoo and conditioning treatments, dry shampoo and minimal hot tool use. These colors are high maintenance, but very fun and worth it when committed!

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

We recommend these types of looks for someone who is willing to invest, have patience, spend time to get to their goal, as well as commit to using quality hair products for at home maintenance. These looks are best when starting with healthy hair.

The lightening process can be long and take multiple sessions depending on what kind of hair history each person has, so good maintenance both before lightening and after is important, and that means spending time on your hair. This is a great look for anyone looking to be bold, out of the box or unique!

  • Velvet Nightfall

Q&A with Style Creator Sydney Doctor
Owner and Hairstylist @ Style-lush Salon in Fort Wayne, IN

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I really wanted to create an all over purple color with dimension while sticking with all Pulp Riot colors, so I formulated my base color a bit deeper to create that dimension. I based that with Velvet, then added in Nightfall and a few drops of Noir. I applied that like a new growth retouch and combed it through. For my end color, I based it with Jam, Clear and a few drops of Velvet!

What products do you recommend to create and maintain this look?

For maintenance I would recommend following the initial color service with a clear glaze to lock in the color. I prefer Schwarzkopf Igora vibrance 0-00 1:2 1.9%. Also, I really stress how important shampooing less frequently is! I always insist my vivid color clients use a dry shampoo daily to keep the color fresh. I like Simply Dry by AG!

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I have an olive tone to my skin, so I really like the way the purple balances me out. Other than that, I think this color would be great for anyone with a creative and outgoing personality!
