How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?
I would describe this look as a lived-in icy blonde. The blonde is heavy on the bottom and gradually fades off into the root area, giving it a cool shadow root for a really lived-in feel. This look is perfect for the person who wants to see a lot of blonde, but doesn’t want the maintenance of heavily highlighted hair or an all over blonde.
Which products would you recommend for this look?
I would recommend a very good moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, like Joico Color Therapy. I would also recommend Unite Blonda shampoo and conditioner which is a purple-based product to use once or twice a week to help maintain the icy tones of this color.
For styling I would recommend Unite Boosta spray for volume. It is perfect for fine hair like hers as it is not too heavy. A heat protector like Brocato’s 7 Seconds before using curling iron is a must, and Unite U-Oil will help add shine and smooth frizz.
Which skin tones and hair types can pull off this color/style combo best?
The best skin tone to pull off this light and ashy shade of blonde is cool toned skin (i.e.skin that has a pink or blue undertone). Usually they were very pale blonde as children or their natural hair color is ashy.
What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this look?
When requesting this hair color, the client should tell the stylist that they want to see lots of pale ashy blonde, but that they want less in the root area (a shadow root). They want the grow out to be nice and natural looking in order to require less root touch ups. This hair color doesn’t require as much maintenance as a full head color, but it does require a toner refresh.
How often you refresh depends on how often the client shampoos as well as how much yellow under pigment there is. To help combat the yellow tones, the client can use a purple-based shampoo at home. Also, because of the damage that bleach can cause the hair, it is imperative to use a good moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. I would highly recommend doing a deep conditioning treatment once a week as well. I love Olaplex — I call it youth in a bottle! It makes over-worked, processed hair feel like it did when we were young — strong, smooth and shiny!

I’d recommend using a purple shampoo once a week to keep the hair bright and pearl. I love Kérastase Thérapiste shampoo and conditioner to maintain moisture and strength, Kérastase Masque Thérapiste once a week for an intense dose of moisture and strength, and Ciment Thermique, Serum Thérapiste and Touch Perfection (all by Kérastase) to repair the hair as you style it. If you need something with a little hold for soft curls like this, then I’d recommend Mousse Bouffant by Kérastase or Surf Foam Spray by Bumble & bumble.

Generally fairer, cooler skin tones will look better with pearly platinum hair than very warm or dark skin tones. However, I’m a big believer that confidence is the real key to pulling off this look, not your skin tone. If you want it, go for it!
What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this look?
My biggest tip for recreating this look is that slow and steady wins the race. If you want white or platinum hair, it is going to take multiple salon visits if you want to have any hair left by the time you’re done. Be patient and take care of your hair between visits.

This look is relaxed and undone. I love the how the fluidity of the styling compliments the pure Scandinavian blonde base.
Which products would you recommend for this look?
I used products that are lighter, but still leave the hair polished and soft. You don’t want to weigh down the movement that has been encouraged by the channel-cut shape or the styling. I love to finish with a shine spray for luminosity and softness.
For this style, I used Oribe Royal Blowout to heat protect and smooth and Oribe Shine to finish.
Which skin tones and hair types can pull off this color/style combo best?
Normal to slightly thicker hair works best for this style as the shape has channels of layers cut into it from the inside, but none on the top layer. This adds loads of movement to thick hair, but on fine hair, this technique could take out too much bulk.
To lighten the hair to this extent, the hair needs to be strong. For a Scandinavian blonde, a warmer skin tone is a great match. If the skin tone was cooler and pinker, I would adjust the hairs to be less creamy and more icy for a similar vibe.
What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this look?
In the salon you can ask for ‘concealed concave layering’ or a ‘disconnected section of concave layering’ while leaving the top layer one length. This is an advanced technique, so make sure your stylist knows what you’re aiming for.
For color this is a ‘global lightener’. The hair is fully bleached up to the scalp and a light, creamy toner is used to achieve the soft and slightly warm shade of palest blonde. When styling, I like to use a straightening iron on the ends first, and then a large (32mm) barrel curling iron to twist the mid lengths in different directions. Finish with a mist of shine spray and use a tangle teaser to brush through before refining the shape with your hands.

The ‘New You’ Platinum

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?
This is an icy platinum pixie. There are so many tones that can fall into the “platinum” category, but this one is my favorite. In my opinion, the icy whiteness of this one acts as more of a neutral, which is what I love about it.
I also love a good short haircut on a woman. It’s edgy, but can be soft as well. Also, as a lady who has worn a pixie in the past, it is the most liberating of haircuts. It gives you a style that allows you to really say “I woke up like this”. At the same time, if cut correctly, a pixie leaves you enough room to play with if your day calls for a little more styling or softening up.
Which products would you recommend for this look?
The product choice would vary based on the texture of the person’s hair and the look they are going for on that specific day. I’d first always recommend a high quality shampoo and conditioner that is sulfate and paraben-free. In this case, products with a protein base will help rebuild damage and strengthen the hair’s cuticle. I love Kevin Murphy’s Repair.Me line for this. It is a cutting edge Pea Protein that does not build up in the hair. It helps to rebuild without over proteinizing, which is a must for maintaining healthy blondes.
When dealing with blondes (especially platinum blondes), it is really helpful to rotate in, or combine along with your protein moisture system a toning shampoo or conditioner (also known as purple or violet shampoos). There are quite a few brands that make excellent ones. Kevin Murphy has one called Blonde.Angel. His conditioner or “treatment” is my favorite by far. Paul Mitchell, Watercolors and Ms. Clairol Shimmer Lights are also some great ones. Ask your stylist what they would recommend for your particular tone.
As far as further styling, this particular client has very fine hair. To achieve this look I used Powder.Puff by Kevin Murphy which is a volumizing powder that you apply to dry hair. When agitated, it builds amazing volume that lifts at the root and gives AMAZING texture without sticky product buildup. There are other brands that make this type of product too. Big Sexy Hair, Schwarzkopf, Label M and even American Crew have some solid ones. Kevin Murphy and American Crew are my personal favorites. I then finished her look with Mitch Stone Session Spray. Another one of my favs!
Which skin tones and hair types can pull off this color/style combo best?
Most EVERYONE can pull this tone off! My only exception would be if you have a ton of pink pigmentation in your skin. Because this tone of platinum falls between a cool and a warm tone, it becomes a neutral. And because it is going to be significantly lighter than most skin tones, it will usually create a beautiful contrast. The trick is to get it truly white. Please consult your stylist about this and please don’t try this at hime ladies and gents. It’s not an easy tone to achieve and in cases where previous manufactured color exists, this may quite possibly be out of reach. A serious talk with your stylist is required before beginning this journey.
What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this look?
My most important tip in maintaining this look is to make sure you’re ready to see your stylist more than most other people in your life. Ha! To keep this look on point means agreeing to see your stylist every three (definitely no no more than four) weeks. It’s super important to stay consistent with your root touch ups to maintain this perfect platinum. When going to see your favorite stylist, don’t be afraid to take pictures with you. Go on Instagram find photos you love. People’s eyes can perceive color differently and as such, we tend to describe it in all sorts of different ways. To you platinum could be this white color, to someone else it could be far more ashy, or even more blue, which doesn’t create the same neutral that looks good on most.
Don’t be shy, you’re not offending anyone. Just always make sure you’re on the same page before you even begin. And while you’re at it, when booking your appointment, make sure to let your stylist know your plans. You may need to schedule a teeny bit more time into your appointment for that perfect consultation. I should also say, go in with an open mind. If this is your destination, make sure you know it may be a journey. You may have to go through a few stages of blonde before you get to your desired look, especially if your hair is long or previously colored. Go in with an open mind but a clear idea! That would be my biggest suggestion for getting you to your ultimate platinum look.

This is a platinum blonde asymmetric bob. Asymmetric bobs are my all time favorite style to create because it’s the best of both worlds — short in the nape and gradual length in the front. Let’s not forget about those layers that give it movement and body!
Which products would you recommend for this look?
I’ve been using Igora Royal and Highlifts by Schwarzkopf for over 17 years. They have the highest quality products and I totally recommend them. Believe it or not, my client is 90% grey so my formula for her is 12-0 Igora Highlifts with 40 volume for lift and toning the frontal part, and Igora Royal 6-4 with 20 volume for the nape.
Which skin tones and hair types can pull off this color/style combo best?
I honestly believe this color contrast can compliment any skin tone from the fairest to darkest. There are no limits with color. The bob elongates the neckline so it can make the shortest client feel like a runway model .
What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this color/style?While recreating this style, keep in mind that your client’s hair should at least be shoulder length and full enough to give movement, especially on the sides and the front. This is very crucial for a great bob.
As far as maintaining the color, deep conditioning is very important and I always recommend hydration treatments to enhance the conditioning process. A great tip to keep that platinum from turning brassy over time is a purple-based shampoo and conditioner. I also recommend the It’s A Hair Wrap. It works great to keep hair straight and flowing for the next day while you sleep.

It’s hard to pinpoint a preferred skin type with platinum hair colors, only because of the underlying pigments in a particular person’s hair. Typically olive or pinker complexions pull it off best.
It usually takes a few appointments to get to platinum, so as long as the client has patience, it’s well worth it. If you have coarse or frizz-prone hair, I do not recommend this look.
What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this color/style?For stylists, it’s so important to consult consult consult. Not everyone can have this look and it’s important to explain to clients that it’s a process and may take more than one appointment. We aren’t magicians, and we care about the integrity of the hair. I also recommend using Brazilian b3 Bondbuilder in your color mixes.

This is a low maintenance platinum. I know that probably sounds ridiculous to anyone who has been platinum! This client had been very light blonde for several years, but was tired of the constant need for upkeep. We decided to add a shadow to her root area while still maintaining her bright platinum blonde. She loves being able to stretch her time between appointments and no longer has that that ‘”wow I need my roots done” feeling!
Which skin tones and hair types can pull off this color/style combo best?
By leaving some of her natural color at her roots and around her face, it is a more flattering color and can work on most medium to light haired clients. It is important to be cautious when lightening the the hair. Fried blonde hair is just not pretty! A golden blonde or a coppery blonde might be a more suitable option for someone with very dark hair.
Which products would you recommend for this look?I styled this look with Big Sexy Full Bloom spray-in volumizer all over before blow drying. I then sprayed Style Sexy 450° Protect before curling with a 1-inch iron. We finished the style off with Kenra Dry Texture Spray to add some texture and separation to her curls!
What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this color/style?
Because the color is blended very naturally, this style also looks great straightened, which is how she usually wears it. She will return in about seven to eight weeks to retouch any areas that need lightening and perform a toning service to keep her blonde looking platinum. Her at-home maintenance includes using Matrix SoSilver shampoo on a bi-weekly basis.

The is a nice, transitional platinum and silver look. It is perfect for someone who is apprehensive about going completely silver. My favorite thing about this look is that while it is beautiful, it is still easily changed.
Which products would you recommend for this look?Olaplex treatments and the take home #3! I don’t do a platinum service without the add on of Olaplex. Purple shampoo always helps too. I recommend the Joico Color Balance purple shampoo. I also recommend a good after shower leave-in treatment.
Which skin tones and hair types can pull off this color/style combo best?This is such a light hair color and skin tone does play a big role in how it’s going to look. For this look in particular, I would say a skin tone that is more neutral (not a lot of warmth) works well. I’m pale with freckles and sometimes my skin looks splotchy. As much as I want to keep my hair this light, it really just washes me out. That being said, I have still seen some other gorgeous red cheeks pull this color off!
As for the hair type, I can personally work with a wide range. This client has a medium to fine texture, but someone with more coarse texture or thick hair can have this style too. It might take a bit more styling products and time, but it’s doable for all hair types.
What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this color/style?To recreate the style, use a round brush and blow dryer and roll the hair up. Sometimes I will touch it up with a straightener to smooth some pieces out. Maintaining this color is important, so listen to your stylist and use what he or she recommends for your hair.

I think the rules about skin tone and hair color are changing. This particular client is pretty tan, so that’s why I chose to not go all ashy or all beige. It’s really just about what you feel you can pull off. If you “own” it, your skin tone shouldn’t matter.
What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this color/style?
My favorite tip when I balayage a client like this is to do some babylights foiled around the hairline, then hand paint the baby hairs over the foils at the end to get a seamless bright hairline.
Maintenance is all about the right products (see above) and washing less often with cooler water. This client comes in regularly every six weeks to get touched up around the face and toned.

Which products would you recommend for this look?I recommend a purple shampoo to extend time between toners and touch ups. I used Schwartzkopf Color Freeze. I would also recommend a repairing conditioner to keep the ends soft and healthy. Biolage Repair Inside is a personal favorite.
Which skin tones and hair types can pull off this color/style combo best?For this look, I would recommend having a natural blue/purple undertone in your skin, otherwise it may look too brash or unnatural next to a very olive or yellow undertone. As far as the style, anyone with a mid length haircut can pull off these soft, effortless curls. They give the hair movement while maintaining the length.
What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this color/style?I used a soft weave balayage technique to create this look. Work one inch from the scalp to preserve the natural root (unless they have grey) and tone with a bright, no ammonia toner.
To preserve, come in to the salon every six to eight weeks for regular tones and use a purple shampoo. For the curls, use a 1-inch barrel curling iron and leave one to two inches of the ends out. Curl the whole head away from the face, then spray with Alterna’s texture mist.

This is honestly my favorite look I’ve done in a while. The short, jawline blunt cut really stands out with the icy blonde. I also love to end a style with bouncy curls to give a carefree and effortless look! I’d say my favorite thing about this look is the icy white hair. I’m obsessed with blondes, the lighter the better!
Which products would you recommend for this look?
I recommend using Iron Shape Thermal Spray by Redken to protect your hair from any heat damage, as well as Shine Max by Pureology to give it a beautiful shine and smooth look. As far as styling goes, I used a 1/2-inch curling wand and rotated back and forth to get that effortless beachy wave. I finished the style off with Pureology’s Strengthening Control Hairspray to give it a light hold.
Which skin tones and hair types can pull off this color/style combo best?I’d recommend this color/style for clients with cool tones for the best results. Because of its extreme icy tone, it can really wash out a client.
The hairstyle is an easier story. This client has endless amounts of hair and loves the extreme blunt cut to give it even more of a “European” edgy look. This could also be a good look for clients with fine hair because it could give the illusion of thicker hair since it is all one length. My client has fair skin, very cool eyes and strong facial features that compliment this cut very well!
What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this color/style?
Take care of your hair! Lightening can cause a lot of damage to your hair if it is not maintained properly. That means thermal protectants, sulfate-free shampoos, etc. Using a purple shampoo a couple times of week will make a HUGE difference for an icy color like this!

This is an icy balayage. My favorite thing about a balayage is that the grow out has a very sunkissed effect. It’s a low maintenance hair trend as opposed to an all over white blonde that would have to be touched up every four weeks.
Which products would you recommend for this look?
I would recommend Davines products across the board! When going through the stages to get to the perfect blonde, it’s always important to keep the integrity of the hair. Davines’ Nourishing Enzyme Spray can be used before you blow dry to keep your blonde healthy as it rebuilds the strand from the inside out. Davines’ Silver Alchemic shampoo and conditioner is what will save your hair from turning yellow. The purple will counteract any golden/brassy tones.
As for styling, the textured beach wave is totally in. With Davines’ Dry Texturizer, you’re able to achieve an undone and tousled look without the grittiness of a sea salt spray.

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?
I call this look “surfer chic”. It’s bright and blonde without being over processed and the cut is heavy on the undone texture. My favorite thing about this look is that you can go longer in between touch ups without sacrificing style. This is also the kind of cut that will work natural or styled.
Which products would you recommend for this look?I am obsessed with Rene Furterer. They are a French company and all their products are 90-100% natural and pharmaceutical grade organic. With this look, I started with the Volumea Mousse to add a base of volume at the roots. I then used their Control Emulsion Styling Cream for frizz control. The finishing touch is my FAVORITE product — the Vegetal Texture Spray
Which skin tones and hair types can pull off this color/style combo best?
While I think this kind of color works for almost all skin tones, it looks the best on people with light to medium skin tones with yellow undertones.
What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this color/style?
I always send all of my clients home with the Okara Silver Shampoo to use twice a week. For the best results, you should come in every every eight weeks for trims and every 12 weeks for touch-ups and toning.

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?
My client came in looking for “silvery Elsa hair”, and I’m really happy with the ice queen look we achieved. She came in with about three inches of regrowth, so this was definitely a color correction project, but her hair felt great afterwards!
Which products would you recommend for this look?
I like to use Olaplex in all my blondes to keep the hair strong and healthy. I also sent her home with Fabuloso in “platinum” from Evo. This is a color-enhancing conditioner that will keep her silver until her next appointment.
I styled her hair using the Anti-Breakage Thermal Protectant from Alterna for heat protection and Easy Tiger from Evo for a smooth blowout. Take home products are key to protecting your hair investment!

I think there is a silver shade for everyone! Generally cooler-toned skin best compliments extremely cool-toned hair, but it all depends on the client’s aesthetic and lifestyle. Confidence to pull off the look is key.
What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this color/style?
Prepare for an investment and time commitment! Ideally, double process blondes should get a retouch every four to six weeks to avoid banding and breakage, but it can take multiple sessions to get this light in the first place. Find a stylist you trust, bring photo inspiration, and be open minded to the process if your dream hair can’t be achieved in a day. Most importantly, don’t try this at home!!

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?
I would describe this look as a modern twist on the balyage and ombré. What I love best about this look is that it’s very versatile and it’s very low maintenance. The client could go about three months (maybe even longer) without having it touched up.
Which products would you recommend for this look?
The products that I would recommend for this look are a 1 1/- inch curling iron or wand and some light to medium hold hairspray. You also want a good shampoo and conditioner. Please do not use products from the drug store! You want to buy your products from your local salon or beauty school.
Which skin tones and hair types can pull off this color/style combo best?
I think this color would look great on anyone. Whether you have straight or curly hair, dark or light skin, this color would look great on you!
What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this color/style?
The best tip I could give on recreating this look would be make sure that when you are balayaging that you blend your lightener up high enough around the face. Additionally, make sure you blend your lightener so you don’t have any harsh lines. Be sure that you are saturating properly. If you don’t have good saturation you won’t see a change in the lightening process.
Shampoo with a purple shampoo like Fanola No Yellow, but any purple shampoo will do! Let that shampoo sit on the hair while you go mix your gloss/toner. The best way to maintain this look is to use a purple shampoo at home as well. You also want to limit yourself on how much you wash your hair. You should only wash it once or twice a week.

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?
This is a smoky blue shadow root with icy blonde. I particularly like this look because it gives dimension to the blonde she has. Additionally, because it can become less maintenance if she were to grow out her natural hair color, it would blend in much easier.
Which products would you recommend for this look?
As a professional I highly recommend that salon quality products be used, whether it’s for styling or when washing. Here I used a leave- in conditioner for moisture from Schwarzkopf Professional and I also used a serum specifically for color treated hair and a heat protector before I flat ironed. I used products that would help prevent fading, give added moisture, and prevent heat damage while repairing her hair.
Which skin tones and hair types can pull off this color/style combo best?
To be honest, I feel many different types of skin tones can wear something like this if you wear make-up. Sometimes being this light can make someone look a little washed out, however if you compensate with some blush and bronzer, you’ll be fine!
As far as hair types goes, this might not be ideal for someone that has lots of hair. This is a one length haircut and it might not sit right. Or if you’re someone that’s into styling, this might not be a good idea for you as well.
What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this color/style?
This hair color is beautiful, but it does require maintenance. Shorter hair needs to be cut more often to keep the shape and this icy blonde needs toners regularly. You can use a purple shampoo in between visits to help it from turning too yellow, and I would recommend a toner every two months. Another huge thing that should be added to your hair regimen is a reconstructive treatment to keep the hair healthy. For the finished look, I did blow dry her hair as smooth as possible and then I flat ironed her hair for a polished look. If you blow dry first and then use a flat iron or curling iron, it’ll be much easier to not fight with any frizz, in addition to not having to use higher heat to make the hair look smooth or be at the risk of further damage.
