This particular shade of red hair is popular because it’s flattering to a variety of skin tones and eye colors. Take a peep at our collection of auburn hues to inspire your next visit to the salon!

  • Golden Caramel

Q&A with style creator, Miyoko Bordeaux
Senior stylist @ 7 Salon in Bellevue, Washington

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This is a warm dark brown with subtle golden caramel balayage for an auburn effect. My favorite thing about this look is how natural it looks. It’s very low maintenance which is what all my clients are looking for.

Which products would you recommend for this look?

I love SEVEN hair products. When wet, I sprayed 7-10 sprays of Protect onto the hair for heat protection. Then I used the Diamond serum (1 pump) mixed with Leave In (5 sprays into palm) to give a shiny and luxurious feel and to reduce any frizz. To finish I used the Working hairspray to give it a light hold with movement.

Which skin tones and hair types can pull off this color/style combo best?

This color goes best with anyone with a little warmth to their skin tone. It will bring out the natural glow in the skin. Any hair type can pull off this color on short, medium or long hair.

What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this color/style?

The best tip I can give anyone with any color on their hair is to always use a color-safe shampoo and conditioner! Use a heat protectant spray to maintain the color even longer.

  • Two Tone Auburn

Q&A with style creator, Dena Minarczyk
Independent stylist/colorist @ Beau Geste Hair Studio in Bartlett, IL

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This look is a favorite of mine. It is a balayage with two tones of auburn and a bit of a darker base at the root. What I love most about it is the fact that it is super low maintenance for the client. If they are a more neutral shade naturally but want an auburn look, they can have the root color be close to their natural shade so outgrowth is not an issue. Balayage is such a beautiful technique. I definitely favor it over regular highlights because of the natural look and also the fact that it is much less to maintain.

Which products would you recommend for this look?

Anytime you go with red tones, it is extremely important to use professional products at home! Red tones fade faster than other colors. Why wash all your money down the drain (literally) by using drug store brand products on your freshly colored hair?

I highly recommend Joico or Goldwell shampoos and conditioners. Sometimes a little trick I will do is to make a color wash conditioner for my clients by putting a little of the color we used into a bottle of conditioner so they can “tone” at home once a week. As for the style, I ALWAYS use Rusk Deep Shine Lusterizer. It is hands down the best leave-in/sealer/styling agent. That with a little root lifter and a good blow dry really “makes” a style.

Which skin tones and hair types can pull off this color/style combo best?

This particular shade of auburn looks best on olive skin tones. I call it a cinnamon color. It really brings out the undertones of that skin color and brightens it up, especially in the winter. I swear it made her instantly look more tan! If you have pale skin, I would go with more of a copper tone.

This cut has many layers. I only recommend it if you have thick hair. If your hair is thin, too many layers will make it look see-through at the bottom.

What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this color/style?

This color was achieved by an ombre with a level 4 at the root and a level 6 through cinnamon the ends. Then I used lightener to balayage highlights in and toned them with a level 7/8. If you have grays, the maintenance would be touch ups at the outgrowth area every four to six weeks, depending on how gray you are. Then a balayage touch up would be required every three to six months.

  • Auburn With Rose Gold Highlights

Q&A with style creator, Gianna Fabian
Hairstylist @ Victor Russell Salon in St. Cloud, FL

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This is a multidimensional auburn look and my absolute favorite thing about this canvas are the rose gold highlights peaking through!

Which products would you recommend for this look?

I first used the Color Protect shampoo and conditioner by Paul Mitchell. For styling, I cocktailed Super Skinny by Paul Mitchell with the Awaphui Wild Ginger hydrocream whip. After the blow dry, I applied a little more Super Skinny to the ends of the hair and set it with Stay Strong by Paul Mitchell.

Which skin tones and hair types can pull off this color/style combo best?

Fairer skin tones can really pull the reds off best! Thick and healthier hair pulls this color off well due to the shine and dimension this color brings.

What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this color/style?

Recreating this color can be a little challenging due to different hair types, textures and porosity of the hair. Evaluate the canvas you are working with before you decide if red is your for sure end result.

Maintaining beautiful red hair requires a little more care than most. Wash less frequently, wash AND rinse with cold water, avoid harsh shampoos, and wear hats if you are going to be out in the sun a lot, Last but not least, visiting your salon sooner to keep your color fresh will always help.

  • Auburn Balayage

Q&A with style creator, Jenna Murray
Hairstylist @ Salon Edge in Orange County, Yorba Linda, CA

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This is a two dimensional red with a balayage touch. My favorite thing about it is the red violet mixed with the copper red to create an all over auburn tone with highs and lows.

Which products would you recommend for this look?

For this look I used Rusk and Schwarzkopf color. To style, my go-to line is Unite haircare. Their beach spray is a must! I almost always use it after waving with a flat iron.

Which skin tones and hair types can pull off this color/style combo best?

In my opinion, all skin tones hair types can pull off this color and technique, with the exception of super curly or Afro hair. For those hair types, I would do the same color but a different technique of placement.

What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this color/style?

My best tip as someone that specializes in balayage is it’s all in the blending and creating a smooth transition into both colors. Maintaining this particular hue is a little more then normal as reds do tend to fade quicker than most colors. Keeping it fresh and vibrant is a must.

  • Dimensional and Warm

Q&A with style creator, Lael Ann-Marie
Hairstylist @ Belle Sirène Salon in San Diego, CA

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This auburn look is dimensional and a warmer, more fun alternative to blonde or even caramel highlights for girls who are naturally darker. It is subtle enough for the office, but still bold and edgy. My favorite thing about it is the seamless blend between the levels of lightness and that the tones tie the look together for an overall seamless blend with tons of dimension.

Which products would you recommend for this look?

I would recommend Davines All in One Milk to prep the hair. It provides hydration, thermal protection, and a bit of frizz control. I would also use Oribe Supershine Moisturizing Hair Cream to help seal the cuticle and add shine for the blowout.

Which skin tones and hair types can pull off this color/style combo best?

This look can work on any hair type (though there is more styling involved for more textured hair), and works best with medium to dark brown, or even black hair. It looks best on neutral, olive, and darker skin tones. Stay away from it if you have any red undertones.

What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this color/style?

To recreate this look, start by highlighting, formulating to leave warmth in the hair to keep depth and not over lighten. I used a balayage technique for a more seamless dimension. If you need to cover grey hair, start with with the base color and allow it to process, rinse and dry before beginning your highlights. Allow for lightest pieces to frame the face and simply dust the mid shaft to ends. Gloss the hair with a demi-permanant color. I use Redken Shades EQ equal parts 09AA, 06AA, and 05RV. Leave on five to ten minutes. Finish the look with long layers and face framing layers for an extra kick.

This look is very low maintenance. Aside from root touch ups (if they need it), it only requires maintenance every 10-12 weeks to refresh the gloss and move up the highlights as needed.

  • Soft Auburn

Q&A with style creator, Esther Chapman
Hairstylist @ Bellezza Cristali’s Hair Salon in Pleasanton, CA

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This is a soft auburn, which by definition is in the red-brown family. It’s not an extreme red, but it definitely has the warm undertones with a hint of copper and red that peak through in the highlights. My favorite part about this is just that — the subtle hints that leave you questioning what color your eye is actually catching.

Which products would you recommend for this look?

Red tones do tend to fade faster than others, so I always recommend using a color conserving shampoo and conditioner such as L’Oréal Professionel’s Vitamino Color line. For styling I also used all L’Oréal Professionel Products. I suggest using a leave-in cream like Mythic Oil Creme Universelle on the ends. It is great for smoothing and nourishment on dry or frizz-prone ends, yet light enough that it won’t weigh the hair down or leave it feeling greasy. For added volume I use their Techni Art Volume Envy mousse in the crown and I always finish with a light spray of Extreme Lacquer.

Which skin tones and hair types can pull off this color/style combo best?

This color combo is pretty versatile as it still keeps the darker tones around the face and is only accented throughout the mid shaft and ends with the subtle auburn. It is suited best for light to medium skin tones, but could work on darker tones as well.

As for the cut and style, this particular client has medium density hair with a good about of wave and texture to it. Curls love holding on to hair with some texture.

What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this color/style?

My advice is to always use professional salon products, This will help is preserving the color as well as the integrity of your hair. Also, always use your fingers or a brush to loosen your curls up once they have cooled. This is ESSENTIAL.

  • Sun-Kissed Auburn

Q&A with style creator, Katy Lee
Colorist & Stylist @ ACES: A Chuck Edwards Salon in Austin, TX

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This is a sun-kissed auburn. My favorite thing about this look is how the copper highlights give it such a natural dimensional look that also brings out the rich depth of the deeper auburn color.

Which products would you recommend for this look?

For washing, I used Catwalk’s Fashionista Shampoo and Conditioner for warm tones.

I wanted to to give this client a lived-in wavy style that would show off all the dimension in her color, as well as the layers in her textured lob cut. I prepped her with S Factor Body Booster and DēvaCurl Wavemaker on wet hair. After a quick blow dry, I used a 1.25-inch tapered wand to curl her hair by alternating the direction of the curl in each section for extra texture. Once the curls cooled down, I broke them apart and finished with Fave4 Texture Takeover spray.

Which skin tones and hair types can pull off this color/style combo best?

Copper-based auburns compliment fair skin tones best. If you have fair skin and are considering this color, you will notice that it will add a natural warmth and glow to your skin and your overall look will pop!

What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this color/style?

Invest in a dry shampoo and a good sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo and conditioner. Try to shampoo hair less frequently to maintain the vibrancy of the color. When color fades, you can maintain the color vibrancy with a glaze at the salon.

There are many different tones of red, so when asking for this color in the salon, bring pictures for visual representation so you can communicate clearly with your stylist which shade of auburn red you have in mind.

  • Warm Tones With Auburn Hues

Q&A with style creator, Leah Carlson
Owner of La La Luxe Salon in Providence, RI

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This look is fresh, streamlined warm tones intermixed with deeper auburn hues. My favorite thing about it is how versatile the color is and how it can be a great option for someone who may want to experiment with warm, auburn tones without being or feeling too shocking. It’s soft, dimensional, and scratches the color “itch” for any woman who has been wanting an auburn hue.

Which products would you recommend for this look?

I styled the entire head with smoothing and frizz-fighting products. My favorite (and the products I used here) is R+Co Park Ave blowout balm mixed with a dollop of R+Co Tinsel smoothing oil. I blowdried with a boar bristle brush (or Mason Pearson brush) for extra sheen. I finished with a little curling iron to give it a subtle wave, then sprayed with R+Co Foil which is a frizz and static spray that helps to add movement and shine on finished styles.

Which skin tones and hair types can pull off this color/style combo best?

I would say cooler skin tones wear this shade best. My client featured here is a naturally light blonde! She has ice-blue eyes and cool skin. The auburn appears warm visually, yet there’s a lot of cool tones and deeper lowlights that have a cool hue to them to balance the warmer tones everywhere, and that’s what gives this finished look such a multi-dimensional tone. I love mixing cool and warm auburn tones when I’m coloring someone this hue. It makes it look more natural and prevents the color from turning brassy over time.

What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this color/style?

She has to see me every two weeks for a fresh glaze (so important) and she needs to wash her hair very infrequently. This color fades easily, so not shampooing and coming in for frequent glazes will help in the long run. Using moisturizing shampoos and conditioners, as well as the styling products mentioned above, will help her to maintain the smooth look/style.

  • Auburn Sombre

Q&A with style creator, Jessi Semcken
Hairstylist @ Salon MMM in Palatine, IL

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This is an auburn sombre. It plays off the natural color of the hair as the highlights and lowlights give it what the sun might naturally do to the color.

My favorite thing about this look is that it has a lot of dimension. It is not just one flat color. The multiple colors of red give it so much depth. Anytime I get to put red tones in hair I get excited because so many people fight red!

Which products would you recommend for this look?

I styled this look with a styling cream (Control Emulsion by Rene Furterer) and a little oil (Karinga by Rene Furterer) because she is naturally curly so I wanted to give it a straight look. For someone that already has straight hair with little volume, I usually style with a mousse (Volumea by Rene Furterer).

Which skin tones and hair types can pull off this color/style combo best?

I find that paler skin tones always look good with red in their hair. I believe that everyone can put red tones in their hair, it’s just a matter of finding the right tone that works for you. Auburn can range from orange based reds to blue based reds. If people like a cooler look to their hair, I usually recommend a blue based red.

This style is very versatile and I believe that any hair type can pull it off. No two heads of hair are the same, so I can do the same technique on different people and the results will vary. On someone with thicker hair, the highlights and lowlights might be more diffused on the top, while on someone with finer hair, the highlights will be more pronounced.

What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this color/style?

When I need to recreate this look I start with a highlight and lowlight on the top and blend it into a balayage at the ends. Depending on how much natural warmth comes through (which most people pull some sort of warmth), I will glaze it over with an auburn to give it more shine. With this color, I wanted something that was easy to maintain.

Once the color is finished, the maintenance on it would be a monthly glaze to keep the auburn tones and the shine. For at home care, I will recommend a colored conditioner to use once a week or every two weeks to keep it looking fresh all the time.

  • Classic Bob With Auburn Twist

    Q&A with style creator, Priscilla
Redken Master Specialist Stylist @ Salon LaPage in Denton, Texas

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This is a classic bob cut with a fun, autumn-inspired auburn twist. My client is an art teacher, and in our consultation for this specific look she wanted something that appeared conservative with a funky flair. We decided on a classic line with fun color. My favorite thing is the clean line of the silhouette because it’s always eye-catching.

Which products would you recommend for this look?

To style this understated cut, I started by shampooing with Pureology Hydrate Shampoo and conditioning with Pureology Hydrate Light Conditioner. I prepared the hair using Redken One United and Redken Pillow Proof Spray Primer. I then emulsified Redken Velvet Gelatine and Redken Powder Grip for volume and a bit of texture. I chose Redken Argon-6 to finish the look for a natural reflection in her beautiful, red-toned hair.

Which skin tones and hair types can pull off this color/style combo best?

I love the bob line for its versalitility. The length and texture can vary for many different types and densities of hair, but the silhouette of the shape is always iconic and easily identified. Fine, medium and thick hair can all wear this shape with just a bit more or less texture/length.

The red-based auburn is worn best on those with a neutral and/or olive skin tone.

What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this color/style?

I tell all my redheads to use Pureology shampoo and conditioners as they are the only ones with the antifade complex to help extend the life and vibrancy of their color. I also recommend extending your time between shampoos to every other or every third day, making sure to only shampoo your roots and condition your ends.

Maintenance on this particular color is four to six weeks, with the cut falling in the five week range.

When styling, make sure to use the right diameter of brushes for the amount of volume and curl you wish to achieve (I used a 3/4-inch for her roots and a 1-inch for her ends).

  • Dimensional Red

Q&A with style creator, Lindsey Couch
Hairstylist @ Focus Salon in Louisville, Ky

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This is a dimensional red copper with a shadow root. My favorite thing about this look is the depth in the colors. My goal was to create a red copper that was going to look natural, but still have a pop.

Which products would you recommend for this look?

I used Paul Mitchell Synchro Lift 20vol to balayage pieces on top and around her face. Then I dried her and applied ColorXG 6RO + 5RO 30vol. To achieve her curls, I used the Paul Mitchell Neuro Unclipped Small Cone. I alternated every curl, then created a sweep bang with a Neuro Smooth iron. I finished the look with Paul Mitchell Neon Sugar Twist.

Which skin tones and hair types can pull off this color/style combo best?

I believe any hair type can be red. Curly, straight, fine, or thick — really anyone can pull off red. I will say not every skin tone can pull off this red. This red hair looks best on someone with a paler skin tone. The key to red is finding one that fits you.

What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this look?

To maintain this red, I encourage my clients take home a good color safe shampoo and conditioner. My favorite is Paul Mitchell Ultimate Color Repair. It helps your color to last up to nine weeks. This line also includes a thermal spray and a weekly mask.

I also never let my reds leave without a dry shampoo. The more you shampoo the more your color will fade. When you do shampoo, use cold water. This will cause less fading and close the cuticle on your hair. I see my clients with red hair every six weeks. If you are looking to achieve this auburn-inspired look, ask your stylist for a dimensional red with a shadow root.

  • Ana’s Bright Auburn

Q&A with style creator, Jen Jensen
Hair Artist @ Salon Seven in Los Angeles, CA

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This color is a bright auburn, inspired by Ana from Frozen. My favorite thing is that the client is not a natural redhead. I love creating reds that look natural on someone who’s not naturally a redhead!

Which products would you recommend for this look?

I used Wella Color Touch for this look.

Which skin tones and hair types can pull off this color/style combo best?

Fair skin always looks great with this tone and any hair type can pull off the style, but I think confidence is key for pulling off any look.

What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this look?

A salon quality color-safe shampoo and conditioner is a must to maintain this color. There are some tinted shampoos with red hues in them that you can use, just be careful it doesn’t shift you into a cherry red. If you want your color to last you have to invest in quality products at home. Shampoo as infrequently as you feel comfortable, and find a good dry shampoo that you love and make it your best friend. Always condition after shampooing. The trick to a good conditioning is to ring your hair out before you put conditioner on and only put conditioner on from the ears DOWN, your roots don’t need the conditioner as much as the ends.

Bring pictures when communicating to a stylist what you’re looking for. Auburn, copper and ginger can all mean different things to different stylists. Your stylist should be able to go over the photos with you once you’re in the salon.

  • Golden-Copper With Balayage

Q&A with style creator, Becky Gertenbach
Hair Artist @ Beauty Store Salon & Spa in Austin, TX

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

During the consultation, my client and I decided that we wanted to do something that was low maintenance, but still multidimensional. We decided using a warm, coppery-brown base with balayaged pieces of a brighter golden copper. I love that it is spicy and rich in color, and also that it looks almost natural on her without being flat.

Which products would you recommend for this look?

Here I used Davines LOVE Smoothing Shampoo and Conditioner because she has hair that tends to get frizzy. On wet hair, I applied Sebastian Whipped Cream mousse for body and moisture, then Oribe Styling Cream for heat protection and a luxuriously smooth and shiny finish. After I curled her with a flat iron, I used Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray as I separated the curls using my fingers for a textured finished look.

Which skin tones and hair types can pull off this color/style combo best?

Auburn hair looks so flattering on warm to neutral skin tones — on people with green, hazel or brown eyes especially! For this specific color and style, I think people with fine to thick textured hair with long layers can pull it off best. Any hair type can look beautiful when using great products and styling methods.

What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this look?

Always remember that cool water helps prevent color fading! When I see her again to touch up her roots, I will simply glaze over the balayaged pieces to enhance their color and add shine. We will not need to do balayage every single visit.

Communicating with your colorist goes so much smoother if you bring pictures of what you want, as well as talking openly about maintenance up-keep and cost concerns. Use words like “subtle”, “soft”, “natural”, “high contrasting” and “bold” to describe how you want your color to look. This helps us out a lot!

  • Warm Auburn Color

    Style by Monica Hubbard
Hair Artist @ Chic Hair Care Studio in Dallas, TX

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This warm, auburn color on sleek hair is so on trend. This was the perfect change from the client’s previous warm brown balayage highlight.

What I love most is the depth and color tonality of the shades. The color looks brown auburn in cool lighting and a deeper burgundy red shade in warm sunlight.

Which products would you recommend for this look?

I would recommend a sulfate-free, color gentle, cruelty-free shampoo. I am a fan of Pureology and Avalon Organics Hair Care Products. Their shampoos and conditioners are non-stripping and enhance the hair’s natural shine, so minimum styling products are required.

Which skin tones and hair types can pull off this color/style combo best?

Warm skin tones or anyone with a natural hair level 5-light brown to natural black would look best with auburn colors.

The sleek, long layer, blowout razor haircut would suit any client with thick, shoulder length hair that is looking to update their look by removing weighty bulkiness , but without having to trim more than two inches of hair.

What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this look?

Recreating this look requires a patient color specialist to properly pre-treat, lift, tone, and condition the client’s hair. A professional stylist or colorist will often have various preferred color lines to recreate any shade, as well as thorough knowledge to omit any unwanted tones from desired final look.

A lightweight heat protectant spray or serum should be used sparingly before blow drying. You should also be mindful of any harsh chemicals that would strip or harm hair color, such as chlorine, harsh water, or styling products containing excessive alcohol content.

  • Copper Auburn for Fall

Q&A with style creator, Estevina Unique Martinez
Hairstylist @ Salon Estique in Phoenix, AZ

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This is a fun yet classic, fall-inspired look. My favorite thing about it is the dimension in the color with the rich chocolate brown base and copper red ends.

Which products would you recommend for this look?

To recreate these windswept waves, I recommend Aircraft mousse by R+Co to blow dry, a Paul Mitchell Ion Unclipped curl stick for the waves, and Apres Beach Wave Spray by Oribe for finishing the look.

Which skin tones and hair types can pull off this color/style combo best?

Cool skin tones pull off this shade of red hair best. Finer hair types can really benefit from this style as it gives them the illusion of more volume.

What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this look?

My number one tip for maintaining the vibrancy in this color would be using a professional color-safe shampoo and conditioner such as Beautiful Color by Oribe. This is in combination with using a heat/uv protectant like Foundation Mist by Oribe before any styling.

  • Layered Auburn Lob Cut

Q&A with style creator, Carrie Murtaugh
    Hair Artist in Berlin, Ohio

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

I would describe this look as a classic layered “lob” with a full fringe and a bit of spice! My favorite thing about it is the fringe and how it flows with the rest of the cut. The auburn color just makes the overall look absolutely gorgeous.

Which products would you recommend for this look?

I recommend a color-safe shampoo and conditioner like Aquage Smoothing Shampoo and Fanola Nutricare Conditioner. I also spritz in some It’s a 10 Leave-In, as well as Kenra Blow Dry Spray. For volume, I used Kenra Root Lifting Spray, then cocktailed Aquage Straightening Ultragel and Kenra Silkening Gloss to smooth out her ends. I used Aquage Beyond Shine as my thermal protector while creating her waves with my flat iron, and finally I used Aquage Finishing Spray to hold her waves.

Which skin tones and hair types can pull off this color/style combo best?

This pretty auburn color can be pulled off by a variety of skin tones. There are both cool and warm elements to this color, making it very versatile for all skin tones.

What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this look?

My best tip to recreate this look is to ask your stylist for an elongated lob with layers and a full fringe. As for the color, ask for a medium red-brown/auburn. My best tip for maintaining this look is keeping that hair trimmed! Lobs with bangs tend to lose their shape without regular maintenance.

  • Warm & Natural

Q&A with style creator, Samantha Krasniqi
Master Colorist/Stylist @ Salon Dior in Shelton, CT

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This is a warm natural auburn base with some balayaged honey going through it. The balayaged highlights help create movement and dimension.

Which products would you recommend for this look?

I recommend the Wella color safe, sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner. For styling, I love Rusk Texturizing Spray and Sebastian Stylbrid 9.

Which skin tones and hair types can pull off this color/style combo best?

The trick is finding the right red for your skin tone. This particular color looks best with light eyes and fair skin.

What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this color/style?

As usual, auburns/reds tend to fade very quickly so a sulfate-free, color safe shampoo and conditioner are a must. I love Wella Brilliance for color treated hair. Depending on your regrowth/grays, you can always go back to your stylist for a glaze or toner to refresh the color in between color appointments.

  • Winter & Fall Color Melt

Q&A with style creator, Rebecca Borden
Hairdresser/MUA @ Scissors Salon & Spa in Muscle Shoals, AL

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This auburn color melt is the perfect choice for a fall/winter look. The color was inspired by the changing seasons. My favorite thing about this color and application is the versatility! It adds dimension and pops of color without being overbearing and looks great styled curly, wavy, or straight.

Which products would you recommend for this look?

For her style, I used a Kenra Blow Dry spray, Kenra Thermal Protectant Level 20 Setting Spray, and finished her off with Redken Wax Blast. This allows the hair to hold the curl without looking without looking stiff. I used a Hot Tools Marcel iron is give her loose curls, and picked through them with a tail comb so to keep the look from getting too uniform.

Which skin tones and hair types can pull off this color/style combo best?

For a darker auburn hair, I would definitely pair it with someone that has a more olive skin tone. In my opinion, warmer tones look great with deep auburn colors. However, if you have fair skin, you can still pull this look off! I would just use a lighter shade of red for the root area.

What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this color/style?

This color is a very easy to wear and is relatively low maintenance. If you don’t have the flexibility to be at the salon every time your roots start growing in, then this is your style! By adding a darker root, which was pretty close to her natural color, she won’t have issues with new growth. When it’s time for a touch up, I’ll section her hair horizontally in about two-inch subsections and balayage some more of the lighter auburn up into her root area. I use a color comb to blend the darker root area with the lighter balayage to make sure she doesn’t have harsh lines.

For this particular color, I used Wella. They have a ton of different shades of red to play with. Overall, this look is low maintenance and great for a professional look or some causal fun!

  • Mahogany Brown

Q&A with style creator, Carrieann Njaastad
Hair Artist & Colorist @ Style Onsite  in Schaumburg, IL

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This is personally my all-time favorite hair color! It’s a auburn/mahogany brown hair color and is the perfect color to try for fall and winter. I love that it has a lot of vibrancy when you see it in the sunlight, but it’s a great everyday wear hair color as well.

Which products would you recommend for this look?

I recommend using the Schwartzkopf color line to achieve these results! Schwartzkopf has incredible reds. They don’t fade super fast like most other lines. Whenever I do this color it stays vibrant until their next root touch up as long as they use a color protecting shampoo and conditioner.

The waves were done with a flat iron. I used the “It’s a 10” Miracle Leave-In Spray to detangle while damp and blow dried the hair thoroughly. I sprayed the dry hair with a thin coat of Kenra’s Super Hold Hairspray. Then I used a 1-inch flat iron to create the waves by taking a small section, twisting the iron a little over 180 degrees, and pulling down. Just be sure to break the curls up with your fingers and spray again afterwards!

Which skin tones and hair types can pull off this color/style combo best?

I truly think just about anyone can pull this hair color off! However, it looks the absolute best on girls that are natural brunettes. It’s a subtle change from their natural dark hair color, but it’s still enough to make a statement.

What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this color/style?

Definitely keep up with your root touch ups and refresh the ends with the formula every other hair appointment to keep it looking fresh and shiny.

Recreating this style is quite simple! You can use either a 1-inch flat iron or a 1 1/4-inch curling iron to give you the perfect everyday look. Using a firm/super hold hairspray or Schwartzkopf’s Extra Sealer Shine Spray will make the style last all day long.

  • Balayage Highlight

Q&A with style creator, Gabrielle Armanini
Hairstylist/ Makeup Artist @ Salon Diversions in New Orleans, LA

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This is an auburn balayage highlight. I love this look because it’s rooty and dimensional enough so it grows out extremely well.

Which products would you recommend for this look?

I would recommend Aveda Color Conserve Shampoo and Conditioner as well as using the Madder Root conditioner once a week to brighten the color!

Which skin tones and hair types can pull off this color/style combo best?

Any skin tone and hair type can pull off auburn as long as it is the right shade of auburn. Deeper tones work better on coarse hair and a more subtle golden auburn works well with fine hair.

What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this color/style?

Dimension is key! Make sure the color does not look flat and the cut has enough texture in it to style accordingly.

  • Alluring Auburn

Q&A with style creator, Nicole Gray
Level 1 Hairstylist @ Stiletto Salon in Albany, NY

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

Auburn, red and copper hair have always had a special place in my heart since I am a natural redhead. I love creating these looks because I feel like I’m adding people into my little red hair family! Auburn hair has always struck me as “alluring.” It is not the most common color and can easily be picked out in a crowd. You will definitely be making a statement and attracting some attention! I love how unique red hair, yet it still feels so natural.

Which products would you recommend for this look?

I recommend Pureology Reviving Red Shamp’oil and Reviving Red Reflective Conditioner to maintain the vibrancy of the color. For styling, I like to keep the products simple. Pureology Color Fanatic Hair Treatment Spray will prevent this rich red from fading, and Redken Pillow Proof Blow Dry Express Primer will protect the hair from heat damage. Lastly, Pureology Pure Volume Style+Care Infusion will add fullness to the hair and create a perfect bouncy blowout for this sexy auburn hair!

Which skin tones and hair types can pull off this color/style combo best?

The best thing about auburn hair is that it looks great on many different skin tones, but auburn hair will always look the best, and most natural, on cool skin tones with natural pinky undertones. Being a natural redhead myself and having siblings with red hair, I find that the cool, pale skin makes auburn hair really pop. Having auburn hair with this skin tone will also make your natural features really stand out and make your skin look like it’s glowing! Auburn hair also looks beautiful with all eye colors, but especially with blue eyes!

What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this color/style?

Auburn hair is truly gorgeous, but maintenance is something to consider before diving into the world of red. Auburn, red and copper hair require a little more maintenance than other colors in order to keep the vibrancy. Professional color-safe shampoos and conditioners are a must, and you definitely do not want to wash your hair every day. Frequent shampooing will make the color fade much faster. Also, you must be prepared to be in the salon every five to seven weeks for a color refresh to keep your auburn hair fresh, shiny and vibrant.

  • Inner Wild Child

Q&A with style creator, Carla Massimo
Master Stylist @ Currie Hair Skin & Nails in Glen Mills, PA

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

I would describe this auburn look as the inner wild child for reds! My favorite thing about it is that it’s sassy and fun, yet office wearable.

Which products would you recommend for this look?

A curling iron is key to create this look, along with texture sprays like Kerastase VIP Spray or Joico Hair Shake Spray.

Which skin tones and hair types can pull off this color/style combo best?

Fair to olive skin tones would be able to pull off this color the best. It should be avoided if clients have a natural red or pink undertone as this color will enhance that rather than balance it out. This client has fair skin with green eyes, so it was a perfect fit for her.

What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this color/style?

To recreate this color, my tip is to GO FOR IT! You can’t be scared if you want an eye-catching color. I used a combination of R and RR from Redken with varying volumes, and an intense red from Joico. Also, reds tend to fade quicker than other colors, so using a color protecting sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner is VERY important. Utilizing dry shampoo when possible would save the color that much more.

  • Rich Auburn Shimmer

Q&A with style creator, Marianna Peluso
Salon Owner of MAPEL & co. in Malvern, Melbourne Australia

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This is a rich auburn shimmer. My favorite thing about this color and style is the soft waves that show off the different auburn hues throughout the hair like a sunkissed affect.

Which products would you recommend for this look?

I’m a big fan of Wella and Sebastian professional products. I prepped the hair by cleansing it with Wella Color Save shampoo and conditioner which protects the hair from color fading. On towel dried hair, I applied Sebastian Whipped Cream which is a light conditioning style whip that gives a super conditioned, air-light bounce. I also used Sebastian’s Mousse Forte which is a body boosting curl and wave strengthener with UV protection. It is perfect for de-frizzed curls, waves, and control. I finished off her twisted blow dry with Wella’s Luxe Oil-Light Spray Shine.

Which skin tones and hair types can pull off this color/style combo best?

I’ve always thought a fairer skin tone was best complimented by auburn tones, especially those women that have green or blue eyes and a complexion of peaches and cream.

Auburn is actually quiet fitting for most skin tones and hair types. I do however think it’s all about how you wear it. With confidence!

What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this color/style?

To recreate this color, your colorist will place fine stitch highlights throughout the hair to give dimension. After the lightening process, I would recommend to glaze the hair with a semi-gloss color. This will add intense shine and rich, vibrant auburn hues to the hair.

I would recommend to always cleanse your hair with color protecting shampoos and conditioners and treating it regularly. Hair can change how we look and feel every day, so maintaining your color and style every four to six weeks is ideal.

Always ask your colorist/stylist about what is best suited for your hair type. Like they say, redheads always have more fun!

  • Light Reflection & Depth

Q&A with style creator, Kayla Martel
Owner and Color Specialist @ Cachéz Salon Studio Glastonbury, CT

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This sun-kissed auburn is a beautiful combination of light reflection and depth.

Which products would you recommend for this look?

Care: Always use a color safe shampoo/conditioner to cleanse. Auburn/red tones fade the fastest, so it’s incredibly important to prevent premature fading.

Styling: This look was created using just a few go-to products. I use all Verb products. All you need is a volumizer/texturizer like a sea salt spray, a medium hold workable hairspray that allows for movement, and if your hair is fine/flat, a dry shampoo is an excellent tool to add that extra lift at the roots.

Step 1 – On damp hair, spray an even mist throughout of sea salt spray.

Step 2 – Blow dry using your hands, moving the hair from side to side to create fullness and enhance texture from the sea salt spray. We tend to want to always to smooth the hair, but most often that flattens the cuticle down making hair limp or unable to hold a curl.

Step 3 – Once you’ve fully dried your hair, grab a 1 1/4-inch barrel curling iron. Take random sections about 1-inch in size and begin to curl the mid-shaft only. Keep the barrel one to two inches from the roots and leave the tips of the ends out of your iron. Be sure to curl each side away from your face.

Step 4 – Let the curls cool, then finish with a workable hairspray. Break the curls up by shaking them from inside at the roots. If needed, add a little dry shampoo to the root for extra lift.

Which skin tones and hair types can pull off this color/style combo best?

Auburn hair color is amazing for light skinned clients who want to go darker without washing them out. For some reason clients will come in during the fall/winter seasons and assume they must go darker. That only works well for certain skin tones. If you’re pale skinned, you must have warmth added when going darker or you’ll be completely washed out.

This shade will actually add warmth and color to pale skin during the months skin is at its dullest. The multidimensional tones also give the illusion of depth/fullness, so it’s great for all hair types.

What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this color/style?

I’d recommend a 12 week maintenance for this color to retouch the new growth and refresh the vibrancy with a high shine gloss. If you have a grey coverage concerns, then do a six week base color retouch.

  • Fresh & Effortless

Q&A with style creator, Teresa Kim
Stylist/Educator/Salon Owner @ TYKSTYLE in Los Angeles, CA

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This look was about big change for my client. We cut off ten inches of her hair! I love this look because it’s fresh and effortless. She can wash and go by putting a little product in the ends and letting naturally set into a beachy look, or it can be styled into a sleek and sexy blow dry that still carries an edgy look.

Which products would you recommend for this look?

When the weather is colder, I always recommend a leave-in conditioner. The lack of moisture in the air can dry it out and cause frizz. I am really into EVO She Bang Bang which is a dry texture spray wax. I love it in damp hair to dry a little gritty and in styled hair to keep the ends separate in order to see the internal texture.

Which skin tones and hair types can pull off this color/style combo best?

I think that all skin tones can wear this color. Because of the neutral medium brown color with balayage highlights, this color has many natural nuances. The balayage let’s us see multi-dimensions in dark hair.

What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this color/style?

Depending what your natural color is or previous coloring, this color can really be easily maintained. With balayage you don’t have to worry about any lines of demarcation unless it’s altered. I would suggest getting a color refresh 8-12 weeks and consulting with your stylist to see if you should add a couple of highlights around the face if needed. If not, the color refresh will bring back some shine and tone to the hair.

  • Rich Auburn Base

Q&A with style creator, Bonnie Davis
Owner @ Vivid Salon in Linthicum, MD

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This is a drastic angled bob with a rich auburn base kissed with a copper highlight! My favorite thing about this look is how it can play a trick on your eyes. You still feel like you have some length, but there is a fun little surprise in the back!

Which products would you recommend for this look?

I recommend a color-safe shampoo and conditioner from Pureology. I styled this look with Redken’s Pillow Proof along with Pureology’s Style Care Infusion for volume

Which skin tones and hair types can pull off this color/style combo best?

This is a good look for any skin tone. Fine to medium hair strands with a moderate density are ideal for the cut and style.

What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this color/style?

My best tip for recreating this look is to create as much volume in the root area as possible and to just flat iron the ends smooth. Color maintenance is simple for this look with a root retouch and a glaze with Redken Shades EQ!

  • Auburn Color Melt Ombré

Q&A with style creator, Paige Leible
Hairstylist & Color Specialist @ Beautique Salon in Lees Summit, MO

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This is an auburn color melt. I love the tonal and dimensional hues of this balayombre!

Which products would you recommend for this look?

I recommend a leave-in conditioner, Surface Bassu Oil, Keune 2 Phase, and Moroccan Oil Hairspray.

Which skin tones and hair types can pull off this color/style combo best?

Fair to medium skin tones and any hair type can pull off this color. It is also great for blue, green or hazel eyes!

What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this color/style?

Recreate these waves by curling the hair with a 1-inch curling iron, letting your curls cool, then running your fingers through them with the Surface Oil. Maintaining this color by booking a refresher with your stylist! Reds tend to fade fast, but showering with cooler water will help.
