  • Textured Bob

    Q&A with style creator, Sarah
Hairstylist @ Twin Scissors Hair Design in Etobicoke, ON, Canada

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

A simple description for this look in one word is: TEXTURE! Without having to do much, this look always shows texture with lots of layers, however the hair still looks full and thick.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I recommend two Kevin Murphy products that make this look easy to recreate at home. Hair Resort (the liquid version) and Anti Gravity (spray version). Hair Resort gives the hair a beachy texture and Anti Gravity is a weightless spray.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This look would be great on someone who has medium to fine texture hair as this cut creates the illusion of fullness.

This look has to fit your lifestyle, meaning it’s for someone who likes to wear their hair down, waved and styled and has a time to fit a little bit of styling into their routine.

  • Crisp & Clean

Q&A with style creator, Kristy Mailing
Independent Hairdresser @ Baci’s in Melbourne, Australia

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would describe this look as crisp and clean. It has an edgy side to it, but can also be very classy and easily maintained, which is always best for my clients.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I am very big on education for my clientele! I definitely suggest they use professional hair care products. Eleven Hair Care is one of my favorite brands because it is affordable and professional.

Also I suggest that clients with this look come in every four to six weeks for maintenance.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

If cut correctly, this look can be achieved on most clients. It will appear different for every client however, as no person’s hair is the same! This client has fine hair and is absolutely beautiful in this look.

  • Pixie With an Edge

    Q&A with style creator, Ally
Senior Designer @ Ulta Salon in Skokie, IL

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This is a pixie cut with an edge. I love the flow of the lines because it directs the eye around the head and allows movement, even when the hair is too short to create it’s own.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I always recommend at least two styling products with this look. My client has extremely thick hair, so for her I recommend a paste prior to blow drying. I like Redken’s Mess Around to give some hold and separation and then I use my hands to blow dry. If a client had fine/thinner hair, I recommend they using some sort of thickener like Redken’s Aerate. It won’t weigh down the hair, but gives added body because it is a whipped mousse.

For the finish post blow dry and for all hair types, I LOVE Redken Wax Blast. It is a versatile styling tool for any hair and any style. I love that I can manipulate the hair into more of a pieced out look if I want, but it also creates some hold without the stiffness of hairspray.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

Any woman who is ready for a new look can wear a pixie, however, for this specific look because design is added, someone with a more conservative job might not be the best option. I recommend it for any young girl who is looking for something new and edgy, or for the girl who might have a non regular 9-5 job. The best part of a pixie cut is that there are easy ways to create one that will fit any client’s personality.

  • Garcons Cut

Q&A with style creator, Davide Omizzolo
Stylist @ ROOTS MILANO in Milan, Italy

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This is the Garcons Cut, a male line with short sides that is not outlined. I decided to leave a soft fringe to give softness to the model’s face.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

For a Garcons Cut, I would use a matte paste during the day because texture is very important to flatter a short cut. At night, I love the bright woman. Brush it back with an extra strong gel.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend a short cut like this to anyone who wants to radically change their image. For example, this client has recently changed work and citie, and needed a strong image to ride the streets of Milano. This cut and style looks best on an oval, slender face.

  • Natural Edge

Q&A with style creator, Phyllis Anderson
Master Stylist @ JCPenney Salon in Greenwood, IN

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This edgy yet natural look was inspired by 90s supermodel, Linda Evangelista. My favorite thing about this look is the versatility of how it can be worn. With just a slight change in styling, you can easily take this textured look to something more sophisticated and sleek.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

Starting with a great leave-in is key. For this look, I used Mizani 25 Miracle Milk. With just one to two sprays you add a ton of moisture to the hair for a softer more manageable style. I followed that with a product to build up the body in her hair. Big Sexy Hair Blow Dry Volumizing Gel adds volume without the dry/hard feeling most volumizers have. To create texture and definition, TiGi Manipulator was worked through the hair and fingered into the desired look.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This style and cut is perfect for the woman who wants something a little fun and funky, and someone who is willing to take a few extra minutes to create an undone style. It will work on all face types. Women with thicker, coarser hair will have to take a few extra minutes to flat iron the hair as needed.

  • Inverted Bob

Q&A with style creator, Sarah Francisco
Hairstylist @ R&R Studio in Seattle, WA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This is a slightly inverted bob. I love this haircut for its versatility. The inverted bob looks modern and agrees with many different face shapes and hair types.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I love a to use the R+Co Park Ave blow out balm when wearing this smooth and sleek, or change it up with Rockaway beach spray for a tousled beachy look.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This look is great for so many people, from fine and straight like the photo, or messy textured hair! It’s a great haircut to look put together with minimal daily effort.

  • Balayaged Undercut

Q&A with style creator, Ashley Reedman
Hairstylist @ Tony Hairdressing in Christchurch, Dorset, UK

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This short hairstyle is slightly shorter in the back and longer at the front. It has longer layers throughout to help add more texture and movement while still keeping the blunt look at the base. The undercut at the back helps take away some of the extra weight and keeps the haircut from looking too bulky.

My favorite thing is the balayage color because it is so fresh and on trend. The color paired with the cut adds a modern twist to a classic cut.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I recommend Goldwell Dualsenses Blonde and Highlights shampoo and conditioner to help keep the color glossy. Goldwell Just Smooth, Smooth Control gives blow dries smoothness, shine and condition and reduces blow drying time while protecting hair from heated styling tools. Goldwell StyleSign, Twist Around prepares the hair to be waved or curled and helps the style last longer.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This type of look would suit a client with medium thickness hair. It would look best on a client with an oval or diamond face shape. This style is quite low maintenance because when the cut grows out it will stay in shape and as it gets longer, the color will still blend in. The client will not have to keep up with coloring the roots as they grow through.

  • Bold Blush

Q&A with style creator, Crimson Gospel
Creative Hair Artist @ House of Black Art in Vancouver, Canada

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

What’s fun about this look is that it’s bold and different without being too “out there”.  I think a lot of people could pull this off without the worry of doing something too drastic.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I highly recommend Pulp Riot hair color. In this look, the color “Blush” was used. They have great products all around. The colors are easy to work with, wonderful to mix, and come out nice and vibrant. The hair was pre-lightened blonde and a simple balayage technique was used to achieve the “swept in color” look.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I think this look is really good for anyone. It’s great for someone looking to do some cute pops of color for summer, someone who doesn’t like too much maintenance, and someone who would enjoy the short cut as well. It is definitely for anyone who has always wanted a funky color but doesn’t want to commit to all over color. This look gives you a chance to experiment and have fun!

  • Short ‘n Spicy

Q&A with style creator, Casi Stauffer
Hairstylist @ T. Salon in Mesa, AZ

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would describe this look as short, spicy, sassy and classy. It is shorter than the typical bob, yet longer than a pixie. My favorite thing about this cut is that it looks amazing straight, but when curls are added it elevates the look to a whole new level! It is a haircut with personality.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

To style this look, I recommend using a thickening agent in wet hair before blow drying. I suggest either a volumizing mousse or thickening spray. Once the hair is dry, add a few loose curls with a 3/4-inch iron. Now that the hair is curled, I recommend using a finishing product thay adds texture. For this specific look I suggest using a sea salt spray. Salt sprays create texture and define the curls. They really “add the funk”! Spray two or three spritzes about 8-10 inches away from the hair, let sit for a few moments and brush it out!

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This look is for someone who has fine to medium structured hair with a little natural texture! I recommend this cut for someone who is used to putting in a little, though not much, effort into styling each morning. This haircut looks great on most face shapes. Variations can be made to the length/layers of the cut to fit certain face shapes. If the client has a very narrow face, the stylist could add more widening layers, or if the client has a very prominent jawbone, the stylist might want to leave some length around the chin.

  • Chic & Stylish

Q&A with style creator, Beanna Mcferren
Hairstylist @ Studio Posh in Detroit, MI

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would describe this look as chic and stylish. My favorite thing about this look are the layers in the back. It looks like ocean waves at night!

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

To recreate and maintain this look, you need a good round brus. Start blow drying from the back of the head, moving your way around the head and round brushing towards the back.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

The type of client for this style is pretty much anyone that’s low maintenance, from your stay-at-home mom to your on- the-go business woman, and even your rockstar chick hitting the stage.

  • Cut-In Texture

Q&A with style creator, Sarah Cox
Independent Hair Artist @ Sarah Cox Hair in Kennesaw, GA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would describe this look as a longer bob with soft, cut-in texture. I love this look because you can style it several different ways, keeping it versatile and very on trend.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I absolutely love Label M. Volume Mousse for light hold and volume. As a finishing product, Label M. Brunette Texture Spray gives the hair the perfect touchable hold and tousled look.

What type of client would you recommend this look?

The great thing about a long bob like this is that it compliments almost every face shape. I would definitely recommend this look to my long haired clients looking for a change that want to stay trendy.

  • Polished Pixie

Q&A with style creator, Beth Ann Keen
Independent Stylist @ Beth Ann Keen Hairdesign in Oregon City, OR

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would describe this look as a really polished pixie. It is so structured, smart and chic. I think my favorite thing about this look, and cutting pixie cuts in general, is how the shortest possible cut on a woman can be so highly soft and feminine, so much more so then a ponytail!

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I am currently loving HairStory products. The New Wash is so amazing at maintaining soft, touchable and natural looking hair. Because it doesn’t strip out all of the good oils or deposit any weird detergents or harsh agents, it enables me to push blondes even further, brighter and whiter. I reccomend New Wash to anyone who wants to be blonde. I also love IGK Rich Kid Coconut Oil gel for a perfect foundation and finish to short cuts!

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

A polished pixie can be beautiful on any hair type or face shape! I think the days of feeling like a person’s face is too full or too round are finally over. A strong stylist can and should create a short cut for any client that is ready to give it a go!

A pixie is a cut that anyone can rock, however the upkeep to keep this cut in perfect shape is a bit more intensive. We trim this client up and reshape every four to five weeks. I would not suggest that someone with really fine or damaged hair try for this light level of blonde! The color is also a bit of upkeep, but looks amazing slightly rooted as it really shows off the structure of the cut.

  • Wash & Go Beauty

Q&A with style creator, Ella Cook
Stylist @ Square Salon in Las Vegas, NV

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

My favorite thing about this look is how the cut opens her face and the color accentuates her eyes and face shape.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I used Pulp Riot color for the green, which I always recommend because it makes the hair feel amazing! To style, I recommend Oribe Straight Away because she has a waviness to her hair. I used Airstyle to finish for texture and style!

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This style can be good for any hair type. This client personally has super fine, thin hair and we took off six inches to make this cut fit her face shape. It can be adjusted and customized for the face shape it needs to fit. She wanted a wash-and-go look with minimal styling needed, so this was perfect for her!

  • Sexy Bob

Q&A with style creator, Sarah shultz
Aveda Stylist @ First Impressions Salon in Fort Wayne, IN

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This look is a very sexy and edgy razor cut bob. The ends are very textured, removing the bulky line. My favorite thing about this look is that it can be worn straight or curled with an iron. It can even be air dried with a little product for texture. This look is very versatile.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

The three products I recommend are: Aveda’s Confixor because it is absolutely the best gel with medium hold and it gives the perfect grip to the hair for any styling you choose, Aveda Men’s Thickening Paste because it is perfect for adding density without product overload, and Aveda Air Control hairspray because it has a very workable hold and adds dry texture. It is my favorite finishing product!

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This cut is ideal for any woman wanting a modern twist to a classic look. The triangular bob has many variations, this variation with a razor just adds a little more edge.

  • Beachy Lob

Q&A with style creator, Effie Lei
Senior Stylist @ Hair philosophy in New York, NY

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would call this look a long bob (lob) or textured bob. My favorite thing about this look is that you can switch the style easily without taking too much time.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I recommend using a sea salt spray (beach spray) to create tousled, windswept hairstyles with natural wave and separation.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend this look for fine hair types that don’t have a lot of density. This cut would give volume and movement, so it would also be easy for the client to do it at home. It looks great either textured or sleek!

  • Timeless Chic

Q&A with style creator, Jackie Freed
Owner & Educator @ Jackie Davis Beauty in Chatsworth, CA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This look is extremely timeless, classic and chic because of the modern clean lines. What I absolutely love about this style is that even though it is a structured cut, it has a lot of movement and softness with the lightly textured ends. This look will never go out of style.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

My favorite products to use before blow drying are a leave-in conditioner (Mon Platin 12n1) and an oil (Kadus Velvet Oil) for before and after drying. If I have any extra little flyaways, I finish it with a smoothing cream (Sebastian Sublimate).

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

The bonus about this look is that it works for all hair types and face shapes. Because it is a “lob”, it frames the face in a perfect place. This client in the picture has naturally curly hair and most of the time she wears her hair curly. This style works great for that! The key to this style is having the perimeter just sweeping right above the shoulder so you don’t get the “shoulder flip”, as I like to call it. Wear this style curly, wavy or straight it works for everyone!

  • Dramatic Bob

Q&A with style creator, Elle Schimberg
Stylist @ Red Stella Salon in Austin, TX

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would describe this look as a classic a-line bob with a more dramatic angle. What I love about this look is that it is a classic style, yet modernized due to the exaggerated angle.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I recommend R+Co High Dive moisture and shine cream. This should be applied to towel dried hair before styling for hold, hydration and sleekness. After blow drying, hold it all in place with Oribe Imperméable for humidity shielding and a finishing touch.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend this cut for anyone with straight hair. This cut could also be good for curly-haired clients, depending on their curl pattern and their daily styling routine. Depending on the length of the bob, this haircut is good for any face shape. The angle helps elongate the face, making the cut aesthetically pleasing on everyone.

  • #20 Fly Girl

    Written by Cynthia Nicasio

This style is for someone who has had short hair before and can masterfully style something short fairly quickly. Feminizing short cuts with styling takes practice — everyone with short hair has had the feeling of looking like a boy on a bad hair day. If you are considering going short for the first time, work your way to this style in stages. If you are a short hair styling master, go for it!

    How to Style:

    1. On damp hair, apply a root lifter up top and a styling foam all over.
    2. Blow dry hair forward with small brush.
    3. When hair is dry, push hair forward with hands and spray in place with a
      spray wax or texture spray.
    4. For additional texture, apply wax to ends.

    Recommended Products:

Bumble and Bumble’s Dryspun is an airy dry texture hairspray that gives more of a dry shampoo finish than hold. It is perfect to add a little soft dry texture to any look

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

This haircut works well on most face shapes that are evenly proportionate from the forehead to the nose and from the nose to the chin. This cut will give finer hair types more natural volume.

    1. Apply volumizing mousse to the top of damp hair.
    2. Blow dry the top section with a medium round brush going upwards.
    3. Lightly apply a firm styling aid to hair, then blow dry the hair going up, shaping with fingers as you go.

Sexy Hair’s Style Sexy Hair Line has a product called Blow It Up Volumizing Gel Foam. It is a liquid spray that creates serious volume and is perfect for blow dry styling.
