18 Light Brown Hair Colors That Will Take Your Breath Away

Go right in between the color scale and have it all with a light brown hair color. Not too dark, not too light, but just right. Here are some different scrumptious tones and placements of this gorgeous color level to inspire your next hair hue!

Mocha Swirl

Q&A with style creator, Carrie Murtaugh
Independent Stylist @ The Beehive Hair Salon in Berlin, Ohio

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

Mocha swirl is what I like to call this color! My favorite thing is the fact that this particular color works well for blondes who are wishing to try a brunette. It’s not too dark or warm, therefore it is easy to get back to blonde once summer rolls around.

Which products would you recommend for this look?

For this color, I highly recommend the Kenra Professional Bronze Metallics Series color. For styling, I always love my Aquage Uplifting Foam and Kenra Blow Dry Spray.

Which skin tones and hair types can pull off this color/style combo best?

This color is pretty versatile as it doesn’t exactly fall into a warm or a cool category.

What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this color/style?

My best tip to recreate this style is to ask your stylist for a soft mocha brown with neutral blonde accents.

Natural Light Brown

Q&A with style creator, Sussi Svensson
Hairstylist @ Novembersalongen in Sweden, Ängelholm

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This is a natural look that is close to the customer’s own light brown color. She can let it grow out without having to come into the salon very often.

Which products would you recommend for this look?

I used Wella’s Illuminacolor for the color, and for styling I used a big wand. Before drying, I always use a shine cream and a few drops of oil.

Which skin tones and hair types can pull off this color/style combo best?

I think this color is good for those who need color but want to look “uncolored”.

What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this color/style?

Use the large Cerawand to curl, let the hair cool, brush it carefully, then finish with a shine spray. I just used the wand a little bit on her ends. She doesn’t like her hair curled, but not totally straight either.

Dimensional Bronde

Q&A with style creator, Jordyn Lindsay
Hairstylist @ Modify Hair Studio in Windsor, Ontario

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This is a dimensional bronde, the perfect alternative to all over blonde in the winter. My favorite thing about it is that it’s lower maintenance than your standard rooted blonde, but still packs a punch with dimensional highlights and paneled lowlights throughout. It’s very wearable during the drab winter months.

Which products would you recommend for this look?

I usually prep the hair with a heat protectant like Revlon’s Uniq1 Spray and follow with a blow dry aid like Just Blow from Peter Coppola. Depending on how well my client’s hair holds curl, I might use a working hairspray while curling, and I always finish with a glossy shine spray like Revlon’s Glamourama or AG Firewall.

Which skin tones and hair types can pull off this color/style combo best?

I think this color works best on people with neutral tones in their skin, as well as on people whose hair is naturally within two shades of the end result. The color and style are very well suited to finer hair because the placement of the lowlights under the brighter highlights adds some depth to hair that can otherwise look flat otherwise. The soft wave also creates the illusion of fuller hair that still looks touchable.

What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this color/style?

Because this look is on the ashier side, maintaining the color with regular toning or glossing treatments in salon is important. I also recommend a purple-toned shampoo for at home maintenance to all my lightened or blonde clients to keep brassiness out. Regular maintenance in the salon and at home will keep the color looking fresh and ensure that the tones don’t become washed out and drab.

South American Summer

Q&A with style creator, Eduardo Eulalio Sampaio
Hairstylist in São José do Rio Preto, São Paulo – Brazil

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This light brown is a strong trend for summer, especially in Brazil. This style is very nice because it highlights both the skin and the eye color to really brighten a woman’s face.

Which products would you recommend for this look?

To keep the hair high quality, the use of professional brands like Wella, Loreal Professional and Schwarzkopf is very important.

Which skin tones and hair types can pull off this color/style combo best?

This style and color works with all hair types and skin tones. It is a great option for those with darker hair that want to lighten things up.

What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this color/style?

In my professional opinion, the color gradient is what makes a light brown like this perfect. To maintain this color, always use your “old friend” — a moisturizer cream.

Pops of Honey

Q&A with style creator, Jasmine Cardenas
Hair and Makeup Artist @ Salon 1971 in Downey, CA

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This is a soft golden look with pops of honey blonde. I love that this look is season-friendly. It’s light for the spring and summer seasons, but still has some of that richness for fall and winter.

Which products would you recommend for this look?

As far as color goes, I definitely love Schwarzkopf’s golden and beige tones which are used in this look. Their -4 series never fails to impress. To style the hair I used UNITE hair products. I love all of their products because they’re not heavy on the hair at all, allowing me to give clients a light and bouncy look.

Which skin tones and hair types can pull off this color/style combo best?

The look is versatile and anyone between light to mid-brown tones can rock this look. As far as hair types, I would say straight, wavy and curly types can pull this look off. The trick is the placement of the lighter pieces for each of these hair types.

What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this color/style?

My best tip in recreating this color is to analyze what undertones and color the client already has. We don’t want to add more gold on top of red or auburn tones because it will make it too warm. This is a soft gold which means the gold is controlled.

As far as the style, I used a Hot Tools 1-inch curling iron to create waves. To maintain the look, make sure the client takes care of your work at home. Using sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners (like UNITE) will prolong the life of the color in between visits. Also when I do retouches, I not only do the base but I make sure to use a toner at the bowl to give the hair an over all refreshed look with some shine.

Romantic & Soft

Q&A with style creator, Charlene Buonaccorso
Stylist / Owner @ Cheleganti Hair in Townsville, Queensland, Australia

How would you describe this look and what’s your favorite thing about it?

This is a romantic and naturally soft look. What I love most about it is the color texture within her hair. The tones all blend so well, giving maximum shine and dimension to her fine hair. The soft curls on her ends gives the illusion of more thickness, which is what we aim for with her regular visits. I love how this color bought out her blue eyes and made her skin glow, and I really love how it made her feel!

Which products would you recommend for this look?

I’m a lover and proud stocker of MoroccanOil and EVO. Every time I start a blow dry, the MoroccanOil Light Oil Treatment is added for moisture infusion, for speeding up drying time, and for that added heat protection which is so very important.

I am also a lover of the MoroccanOil Volumizing Mousse. This product gives the softest of body, but holds beautifully for that “naturally” styled hair. To finish, I just cannot go without my EVO Miss Malleable Hairspray for that finished soft hold. Lastly, I love EVO Love Touch Shine Spray for shine and gloss. Warning, it smells so good you might want to eat it!

Which skin tones and hair types can pull off this color/style combo best?

This color is best suited for cooler skin tones because the color really makes those skin tones glow. Warmer skin tones may be too much for the skin and clash. It is best suited hair for this style that is fine in thickness and medium in length. Too much hair thickness will make your finished look even more bigger and thicker and you wouldn’t get those intricate and detailed ends.

What is your best tip in regards to recreating/maintaining this color/style?

Visit the salon every six weeks for touch up maintenance as hairstyles/hair colors loose their shape and color hue if left much longer than that. Also, a home care regime is ultra important in maintaining your salon colored hair in its best condition.

Natural Light

Q&A with style creator, Gina Eldridge
Hairstylist @ Dellaria in Somerville, MA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

My favorite thing about this look is how natural it is. I was lucky enough for her to have virgin hair, so I got to play a little bit! I would describe this look truly as sun-kissed hair because of how natural it looks.

What products do you recommend to create and maintain this look?

Because she wanted to have something subtle but enough of a change that it would be noticeable, I did not have to use a toner. That being said, I believe just a sulfate-free shampoo would help maintain the color until her next visit. As far as styling products go, she has straight/wavy hair and doesn’t do any styling usually, so just a leave-in conditioner would be best for her.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This look would best for someone who is very low maintenance and doesn’t come to the salon very often. I believe a balayage like this only needs to be done once or twice a year, so this would be perfect for someone who has a busy lifestyle and cannot commit to coming to the salon as frequently.

As far as hair type goes, this style could be perfect for curly, straight, short or long hair. It works for pretty much anyone! The color of this specific hairstyle would look best on someone with fair to neutral skin, but because the balayage is subtle. However, as long as you match the same tone as what the natural hair already is, then it should work for anyone!

Warm Dimension

Q&A with style creator, Carissa Raia
Hairstylist @ Hair Phases Salon in Rancho Cucamonga, CA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I love this warm toned balayage because it looks like the sun just kissed it. It is low maintenance and boasts tons of dimension.

What products do you recommend to create and maintain this look?

The textured beach waves were created using Redken Full Frame mousse, and finished with Redken Fashion Work spray for touchable hold. The get these waves, curl the midshaft only and leave the ends out.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This look is for the dark eyed and warm toned beauties who are on the go. Pureology Color Fanatic Leave-In will keep the ends moisturized and frizz down for a flawless look.

Modern Ash

Q&A with style creator, Aleesha Darke
Master Colourist / Freelance Stylist @ A Fashionable Hair life in Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

It’s a beautiful, modern ashy, blonde. With darker roots that softly blend into a lighter blonde. I love how we have created the contrasting depth at the root area but Its still blonde on the ends. Which not only looks great but is also low maintenance.

What products do you recommend to create and maintain this look?

To create this look I used Schwarzkopf professional. I did soft babylights through the parting with PPL + 6% and root stretched in between with 6-1 + 3% I toned afterwards with 1/2 9.5-1 and 1/2 8-11 plus 3% To maintain this look Kelsy uses Eleven Australia – Keep my Colour Blonde shampoo and treatment and also Schwarzkopf expert mousse 8-1 to freshen up in between visits.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This look would be awesome for blondes wanting a bit or depth through the autumn/winter months, without the commitment of going dark. The contrasting roots enhance both cool and warm complexions and best yet, It’s a low maintenance blonde which will look great even when your due to get your colour done again.

Sunkissed Brunette

Q&A with style creator, Diana Lopez
Master Colorist & Stylist @ Atma beauty in Miami Beach, FL

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This is a balayage on virgin, medium brown hair. The look adds warmer natural tones without any harsh lines, increasing the dimension and density of her hair. We blended with three color levels lighter from her natural color, giving it a true sunkissed feel.

What products do you recommend to create and maintain this look?

To create this look, I used Wella Freelights with 20vol and Uberliss bond protector to maintain the integrity of the hair. I toned with Wella Illumina 8/37 and 9/ 1:1 + 1.9 vol 1:2. I also recommend Uberliss bond sustainer at home to keep hair moisturized.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

Balayage is a win for people who desire a low maintenance and subtle change with enhanced dimension. It’s also a great color lightening technique for those wanting a gradual color change.

Soft Babylights

Q&A with style creator, Paige Argentieri
Hairstylist @ Trends Salon in Santa Maria, CA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I love this look because it’s so soft and the blend is perfect! You can’t tell where the babylights start and stop because of how fine they are, and that’s probably my favorite part. I am all about blend and having my color look as natural as possible.

What products do you recommend to create and maintain this look?

I used Redken’s Flashlift lightener to achieve this look. To maintain, I definitely recommend a purple shampoo to keep away any unwanted brassy tones!

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I enjoy using this method of babylights on my clients who have a lot of dark, thick hair. I like it because you take smaller sections which gives you get a better saturation and better lift. I also love the super blended lines from all the micro small highlights. The grow out on this look is amazing, making it perfect for girls who don’t want to be in the salon all the time!

Seamless Blend

Q&A with style creator, Brittany VanDyke
National Redken Artist & Stylist @ Oasis Salon and Day Spa in Joplin, MO

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This look is super casual, like I didn’t try too hard. I wanted it to look like the client born with this color. I love how seamless her blend is and that she isn’t overly lifted on her ends. It just looks more believable. We all don’t need to be level 3,000 on our ends!
What products do you recommend to create and maintain this look?x/div>

Redken’s pH Bonder is a non-negotiable in my lighteners (I used Free Hand Lightener here). It protects the integrity of the the hair during the lifting process, while creating a soft and sunny transition. I finish all my colors out with a Shade EQ Gloss. It makes everything pretty and imparts intense shine and conditioning.

I worked from her natural color so her lightening service only needs to be touched up once or twice a year. I recomend a Shades EQ Gloss Service every 8 to 12 weeks to provide shine and to keep the color from pulling too brassy or becoming dull.

PH Bonder has a third step that I retail to upkeep results at home. Redken’s Color Extend Magnetics and Exreme are my go-to lines to provide necessary moisture and proteins after a color service. I especially recommend Extreme Length Sealer and Primer for all my girls and guys who want to be light on their ends and grow or maintain mermaid lengths. They’ve saved my own hair!

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This look is one of my most requested looks behind the chair. It’s universally flattering on everyone. Generally haircuts with longer layers are easier to create this on. Look at some of your old pictures as a child or your own hair when you’ve been on vacation. The tones that are present naturally tend to be the easiest to achieve and maintain and look best on your skin tone. Her color is great for anyone, but it’s especially flattering on someone who has a warmer or olive skin tone. Just tweak the tones depending on your eye color and skin tone. There’s a blonde for everyone, just be patient with your colorist and have realistic expectations.

Sun Kissed Bronde

Q&A with style creator, Patricia Jastrzebski
Hairstylist @ Weekly Trim True in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would call this a sunkissed bronde (a balance of being a brunette and blonde). I love that this specific bronde is natural and soft with some face framing pieces to brighten her complexion.

What products do you recommend to create and maintain this look?

I always recommend a clarifying shampoo and a purple shampoo to keep the color bright and help minimize unwanted warmth. As for styling, I love a good texture spray to separate the waves and keep them lasting. My go to is the R+Co Trophy spray.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?
This is the perfect hair for someone who is brunette and thinking about transitioning into a blonde. This allows a client to do so without compromising the integrity of their hair and eases them into it if they’re nervous about the change. It is also perfect for someone who is on the go and appreciates low maintenance hair.

Warm and Dimensional

Q&A with style creator, Danielle Hruza
Stylist @ Kristina Michele Salon in Hackettstown, NJ

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would describe this look as a warm and dimensional light brown. Is is the perfect highlighted summer look on dark brown hair. My favorite thing about this look is the warmth and different tones of the highlights.

What products do you recommend to create and maintain this look?

The products I would use to maintain this look would start with Strong Sexy Hair shampoo and conditioner. The Strong Sexy Hair line has mango butter that provides great nourishment for the hair and  aloe vera to help stop breakage and keep the hair strong.

To style the hair when the hair is damp, I would use Big Sexy Hair Full Bloom whic is a thickening and volumizing spray. I also recommend Big Sexy Hair Big Altitude which is a lightweight mousse with a no-product feel, as well as Healthy Sexy Hair Soy Renewal Oil to help the health and shine of the hair.

To finish the hair once it is dry, I would use Big Sexy Hair Get Layered Hairspray. This is my favorite hair spray because it has flash drying technology without the feel of hairspray, but still has a strong hold.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend this look for someone with darker hair that is looking to go lighter, but doesn’t want the maintenance of having blonde highlights. This look will also bring great warmth to fair skin tones.

Brunette Meets Blonde

Q&A with style creator, Marissa Shafer
Hairstylist @ Advanced Aesthetics in Las Vegas, NV

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

These babylights with hair painted pieces create the perfect “brunette meets blonde” blend. I love the lived-in look and flawless transition that this duo gives.

What products do you recommend to create and maintain this look?

I used Kadus 5N + 20 vol for the base color and Kadus Lightener for the babylights. I then went through and hand painted a few pieces that were left out of foils. I toned with a 7P and 9V in Redken Shades EQ. To finish the look, I used Monat styling products and the Bioionic Style Winder Wand to create loose beachy waves.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This color is universal and is the perfect for those busy clients that crave the low maintenance upkeep while still allowing them to be trendy with the lived-in look.

Rooty and Textured

Q&A with style creator, Nikole Phelps
Hair Colorist/Stylist @ Tribe Beauty in Chadds Ford, PA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

To me, this look is bold but effortless at the same time. My favorite thing about this look is how it compliments her face and her personality as well. It’s all about the person!

What products do you recommend to create and maintain this look?

A good texturizing spray is a MUST for this kind of look. I personally use Kevin Murphy’s Doo.Over Spray. It gives it the perfect amount of hold.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This look is definitely someone that is willing to stand out a little bit! She has a deeper root with much lighter ends. It’s subtle, but you still notice her. She also has pretty fine hair, so the dimension gives the illusion that there is more hair.

Beachy Brunette

Q&A with style creator, Joy Ishii
Owner and Stylist @ Flirt Urban Salon in San Diego, CA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I love creating a lived-in color and look for my clients. I would call this look a beachy and textured look, using balayage to paint her sunkissed pieces. I love being able to see the blended highlights and bright ends.

What products do you recommend to create and maintain this look?

I definitely recommend a sulfate-free shampoo to protect the color. As for styling products, Bumble and bumble’s HIO Primer and Surf Foam Blow Dry Spray are musts before you blow dry. After the hair is dry, I would spray Dry Spun Finish to add more texture.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This look can be used on all hair lengths! Beachy sunkissed hair is great for everyone. I recommend it to anyone who wants to have pretty natural tones in their hair. It’s definitely a go-to look for the summer!

As for skin tones, let your stylist help you figure out whether or not cooler or warmer tones will best suit your complexion.

Super Cute Lob

Q&A with style creator, Tessa Woods
Stylist @ Ashen Salon in La Jolla, CA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This is a super cute lob haircut. It is a blunt cut with textured ends to allow movement and avoid bulk. I love the sun kissed balayage and chic style.

What products do you recommend to create and maintain this look?

I recommend using Oribe Bright Blonde purple shampoo and conditioner to keep the hair from getting brassy as it grows out, as well as hydrate and give shine. I would also recommend Davines’ All In One Milk as a leave-in spray to help nourish and protect the hair from thermal heat.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This cut is ideal for medium to fine textured hair as is gives the illusion of thick ends. I’d recommend it for someone who has tamed hair or is willing to style it often. The color can be great for any complexion if the right tone is achieved. She has naturally very dark hair and looks so natural with this summery blonde!
