25 Hottest Dark Auburn Hair Color Ideas of 2018

Dark auburn hair is a richer and deeper relative of the reds and leans more toward the browns than the warm spectrum of orange and red. It’s one of the most sought-after hair color trends by celebrities and stylists because of its ability to appear naturally luscious while providing extra contrast to your facial features and putting a glow to your complexion. Another attractive character of dark auburn is that it plays with the light to appear in different levels of vividness – from mahogany and chocolate to brick and rusty.

This brilliant shade will definitely fire you up! If you are craving for a flattering change to your dull brown or black hair, adding hints of red undertones will surely improve the intensity of your look. Let yourself be seduced with this sexy and super versatile color. Check out these trendy options of dark auburn hair that I’ve laid out for you!

How would you describe this look?

This hair has a raspberry ginger color and pixie razor cut with shag bangs, done by natural styling and drying with hands.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This cut and color style are for the contemporary woman who needs a practical look with a heavier color touch to show her attitude. I believe, that nowadays, the short cuts fit any woman in the urban life who wants easy and beautiful hair. I used: for the color 7 – 48 (Igora Opalescence) + 6 – 88 (Igora Royal) + 0 – 88 (Mix Igora Royal) peroxide 9% (Schwarzkopf Professional) and for the styling Blow & Go (Osis) after and Undercoat (Osis) before drying to create a soft control with a little shine.

Dark Auburn Brown for Short Hair

How would you describe this look?

This is a rich auburn textured bob with copper accents.

What I truly love about this look is how seamlessly the brighter copper pieces melt in with the deeper tones. The subtle dimension of the balayage accents her cut and brings light into frame her face. We kept the cut blunt for a modern feel, with just enough texture to keep it weightless and easy to style.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This cut has been so popular with my clientele! It’s easily customized to suit just about any hair type and thickness. This color is for the life of the party! You’ll be turning heads with red tones because they’re unique in a sea of blonde and brown. Even the most conservative employer wouldn’t call this balayaged red unprofessional or unnatural, but it maintains all the fun and sass of brighter hues. Reds and auburns do require special care.

I always recommend coming in for a gloss between touch-ups to keep up the vibrancy, and also using dry shampoo to prolong the time between washes. I used a 1.25″ Bio Ionic Stylewinder to make these messy beach waves and finished her with Kevin Murphy Bedroom Hair, which is my favorite product for building volume and undone texture.

Dark Natural Auburn

How would you describe this look?

The loveliest part about this look is how rich and deep the base color is with subtle pops of cinnamon balayage highlights. When you add the beachy waves it really shows off the dimension and makes this a unique casual look for fall.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This look is perfect for a brunette who is wanting a change to get into the fall spirit but isn’t wanting a loud red or the typical red violet color. The red tones pop enough you’ll get the change you’re looking for but is also muted, so it can be worn in a professional setting and go with a wide range of skin tones.

Reds typically are higher maintenance because they dull quickly, so it’s important to use a sulfate-free color safe shampoo and conditioner. Also, make sure the heat is turned down on your styling tools to lengthen the life of this color.

With Highlights and Lowlights

How would you describe this look?

This look is fun and playful! It’s not too extreme for someone looking to change up their look, because it’s a more muted “natural” auburn tone. It’s also, I feel, a great new fall switch up with the warm reds and browns.

I love that once fall is here my clientele usually welcomes the warm tones back into their palette as opposed to that silver, ash, or beige everyone typically looks for in the summer.

Any advice for someone considering it?

I always warn about the maintenance. Reds are the hardest colors to keep and to remove. That being said if you come in with blonde hair or a natural brown, I will always let you know it’s not as easy to go back as it was to get to red in the first place! The styling is pretty simple.

The highlights in the auburn help out with any wave you’re trying to conquer at home. It’ll show all the different patterns, curls, and multiple shades of color whether it be scrunching with mousse or using an iron! Think of these shades like a red lipstick – everyone can wear red, you just have to find which tone suits you.

Dark Wine and Chocolate Balayage

How would you describe this look?

This is actually a red violet balayage! I colored her roots to cover gray, then balayage the rest of the hair and then put a red violet color on top of it. We do a lot of layering and texturizing, and I styled it with waves or loose curls.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This is a cool toned look and is best suited for someone with neutral to cool toned skin. It is a very vibrant fun color so it may not be best suited for people who work in a corporate office.

How would you describe this look?

I created this auburn color to get my guest ready for fall with a rich chocolate base and 2 warm tones, copper auburn, and caramel brown, for dimension and lots of shine. We showcased her color with a long layered cut for volume and movement.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This color can be beautiful for almost every guest. It can be made vibrant or softer depending on someone’s skin tones. What a great way to make an old faded summer balayage sparkle again, don’t you think?!

Dark Auburn to Light Ombre

Q&A with style creator, Meghan Blake and Dustin Handley

How would you describe this look?

This look is an auburn to gold color melt. What I love so much about this color is how the darker base color gives depth and richness to the overall look which makes her hair look thicker and fuller. When choosing red tones it’s important to take into consideration skin tone as well as wardrobe. If you find yourself wearing more gold or warm tones you will probably be better suited for a warmer tone of red (think copper) while if you gravitate more towards silver or cooler tones you will most likely be happier in a cooler red tone such as a red violet or auburn color. The neat thing about a color melt like hers is it’s easy to change the tone from season to season without having to do a ton of corrective work each time!

This style is a loose, tossed wave. It is my current favorite style to do on clients, and it gives your hair life, with lots of movement and body which is the hot look right now! Texture is everything for hair trends right now. The best thing about this style is you can wear it for quite a few days! It starts out a little more tight and structured-and by day 3, it’s loosened up, but still has its volume and lift.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Reds are the hardest pigment to keep in your luscious locks. Therefore, in order to have your red glistening and looking fresh, you have to make sure you have a color safe shampoo (sulfate free, sodium chloride free, paraben-free etc.) for at-home maintenance. Also, I recommend for a 6-8 week gloss to refresh the tone.

For the style, I would recommend starting with towel drying your hair really well. Spray a heat protectant/leave-in conditioner and brush it through to help keep your hair healthy! My go-to is Untangled by Kevin Murphy. Then, lightly mist a root-lifter. My favorite root-lifter for all hair textures is our very own all-natural based Dear Clark Volumizing Tonic. Next, spray the mid to ends of the hair with a lightweight texture spray to give those curls that bounce. My current favorite is Anti-Gravity by Kevin Murphy. Dry the hair 80 percent dry and finish with a round brush, over directing the hair to give it an extra lift. Take a 1.25-inch curling iron, keeping the iron vertical and wrap the hair, twisting it around the rod while leaving 2 inches out at the end to give it that beachy tousled look! The secret is after curling it, don’t touch it. Letting the curls cool is what locks the shape in. After the hair has cooled down completely, brush through the curls and voila!

How would you describe this look?

This look is a true autumn trend. The color reminds me of cinnamon buns or something with maple in it! The cut and style would be the perfect match for a cozy oversized knit with a chunky scarf! It just has autumn fashion all over it!

Any advice for someone considering it?

Do it! Especially if you have blue eyes and want to make them pop! It would be the perfect color for someone who has warmer undertones or with porcelain skin! The cut would be great for someone who is wanting an easy, lived-in, manageable style! It is one of my absolute favorite hairstyles!

Shoulder Length Auburn Curls

Q&A with style creator, Ricardo Taylor
Hairstylist @ RetrĂ´ Hair in Sau Paolo, Brazil

How would you describe this look?

I consider lightness and practicality! This dark red color is what I point out to people who are not accustomed to lightness.

This can work on different hair textures because it’s made without decolorizing powder, so the hair is healthy and integrates the color beautifully. We call it “Cachoeira de Cachos” for having many bunches grouped in layers.

It provides lightness, volume, movement, and definition – everything people with curly hair would want!

Any advice for someone considering it?

First of all, make the cut using dry cutting techniques. This technique is suitable for all types of hair with ring shapes. Products for styling are Low Poo, One Condition, Style Cream, and Angel which are all from the Deva Curl line.

This cut is suitable for all types of personality and practical lifestyles. The important thing is to choose a professional who is a visionary and who will take all these points into consideration.

Hints of Dark Copper

Q&A with style creator, Karen Busolt
Stylist @ Marlene Weber Day Spa in Poughkeepsie, NY

How would you describe this look?

This cut is perfect for most women with medium to dense hair. The shape is rounded with lots of soft layers, making the hairstyle perfect for all ages. This client has tons of hair, so it was point cut and heavily texturized throughout the interior.

Aveda Smooth Infusion Style Prep and Glossing Straightener were used to form smooth waves on her naturally curly hair. She had grown out, washed out highlights and an inch of level 4 new growth that’s 50% gray. A blend of copper and violet was used to achieve this complex red (Aveda level 5N, R/O, and V/R)

Any advice for someone considering it?

Remember that going from a dark brown to a red requires maintenance, as redheads are the first to fade. That’s why regular touch-ups every 3-5 weeks with a supporting glaze will keep your color rich and sexy!

Beautiful Balayage

How would you describe this look?

This look is a rich auburn color melt with soft textured layering to create lightweight movement. The base is a level 4 with deep red undertones melted into balayaged ends. I glossed the pre-lightened strands with an intense red/orange formula to give radiance to the overall look.

The loveliest thing about this look is the seamless blend from dark to light. It fades beautifully and even when the vibrancy of the red wears off, there is still a stunning dimension throughout the hair.

Any advice for someone considering it?

I would ask anyone considering a look like this what level of commitment they would like to have with their red. Red of any nature does tend to fade a bit quicker than other colors and I like to be transparent about that with my clients from the beginning. When aiming for auburn, be prepared to refresh your color with glossing treatments every 4-6 weeks.

Maintenance aside, I’m a firm believer that there is a shade of red out there for everyone! Be patient with your stylist when curating your red because there are a lot of factors that go into creating a custom color and we want it to be perfect but sometimes it takes a few sessions before it’s right on the money!

Have images ready of things you like and also things you don’t like and don’t be nervous! The beautiful thing about hair color is that you can always change it and usually it’s much easier than you’d imagine, just never be afraid to communicate with your stylist throughout the process.

Short Dark Red Pixie

How would you describe this look?

This look is a fun way to test the waters on edgier looks! The coolest thing about this look is that it’s a perfect tone for the edgy woman with a strict work environment. It can also be for a woman who wants to rock a more toned down red!

I love the richness that radiates from this gorgeous tone! I adore the effortless messy look! It’s perfect for an on the go woman who wants a fun style that she can wake up and fix in 2-5 minutes and be out the door looking like she spent double or triple the amount of time styling this look!

Any advice for someone considering it?

It works really well with any texture. With straight hair, it will have a more edgy look you could wear tossed with some flat iron waves in the front for a softer feel! For wavy or curly textures, it gives a fresh and funky type of vibe! This is such a universal cut and color – for the on the go mom, businesswomen, artistic type – you name it!

I think it looks nice on these face shapes – round, square, oval, and diamond. Overall my motto is, “You can pull off anything as long as you have the confidence to carry it!”
