This cut has been so popular with my clientele! It’s easily customized to suit just about any hair type and thickness. This color is for the life of the party! You’ll be turning heads with red tones because they’re unique in a sea of blonde and brown. Even the most conservative employer wouldn’t call this balayaged red unprofessional or unnatural, but it maintains all the fun and sass of brighter hues. Reds and auburns do require special care.
I always recommend coming in for a gloss between touch-ups to keep up the vibrancy, and also using dry shampoo to prolong the time between washes. I used a 1.25″ Bio Ionic Stylewinder to make these messy beach waves and finished her with Kevin Murphy Bedroom Hair, which is my favorite product for building volume and undone texture.

This look is fun and playful! It’s not too extreme for someone looking to change up their look, because it’s a more muted “natural” auburn tone. It’s also, I feel, a great new fall switch up with the warm reds and browns.
I love that once fall is here my clientele usually welcomes the warm tones back into their palette as opposed to that silver, ash, or beige everyone typically looks for in the summer.

I always warn about the maintenance. Reds are the hardest colors to keep and to remove. That being said if you come in with blonde hair or a natural brown, I will always let you know it’s not as easy to go back as it was to get to red in the first place! The styling is pretty simple.
The highlights in the auburn help out with any wave you’re trying to conquer at home. It’ll show all the different patterns, curls, and multiple shades of color whether it be scrunching with mousse or using an iron! Think of these shades like a red lipstick – everyone can wear red, you just have to find which tone suits you.

How would you describe this look?
This look is an auburn to gold color melt. What I love so much about this color is how the darker base color gives depth and richness to the overall look which makes her hair look thicker and fuller. When choosing red tones it’s important to take into consideration skin tone as well as wardrobe. If you find yourself wearing more gold or warm tones you will probably be better suited for a warmer tone of red (think copper) while if you gravitate more towards silver or cooler tones you will most likely be happier in a cooler red tone such as a red violet or auburn color. The neat thing about a color melt like hers is it’s easy to change the tone from season to season without having to do a ton of corrective work each time!
This style is a loose, tossed wave. It is my current favorite style to do on clients, and it gives your hair life, with lots of movement and body which is the hot look right now! Texture is everything for hair trends right now. The best thing about this style is you can wear it for quite a few days! It starts out a little more tight and structured-and by day 3, it’s loosened up, but still has its volume and lift.
Any advice for someone considering it?
Reds are the hardest pigment to keep in your luscious locks. Therefore, in order to have your red glistening and looking fresh, you have to make sure you have a color safe shampoo (sulfate free, sodium chloride free, paraben-free etc.) for at-home maintenance. Also, I recommend for a 6-8 week gloss to refresh the tone.
For the style, I would recommend starting with towel drying your hair really well. Spray a heat protectant/leave-in conditioner and brush it through to help keep your hair healthy! My go-to is Untangled by Kevin Murphy. Then, lightly mist a root-lifter. My favorite root-lifter for all hair textures is our very own all-natural based Dear Clark Volumizing Tonic. Next, spray the mid to ends of the hair with a lightweight texture spray to give those curls that bounce. My current favorite is Anti-Gravity by Kevin Murphy. Dry the hair 80 percent dry and finish with a round brush, over directing the hair to give it an extra lift. Take a 1.25-inch curling iron, keeping the iron vertical and wrap the hair, twisting it around the rod while leaving 2 inches out at the end to give it that beachy tousled look! The secret is after curling it, don’t touch it. Letting the curls cool is what locks the shape in. After the hair has cooled down completely, brush through the curls and voila!

Aveda Smooth Infusion Style Prep and Glossing Straightener were used to form smooth waves on her naturally curly hair. She had grown out, washed out highlights and an inch of level 4 new growth that’s 50% gray. A blend of copper and violet was used to achieve this complex red (Aveda level 5N, R/O, and V/R)
Any advice for someone considering it?
Remember that going from a dark brown to a red requires maintenance, as redheads are the first to fade. That’s why regular touch-ups every 3-5 weeks with a supporting glaze will keep your color rich and sexy!

I would ask anyone considering a look like this what level of commitment they would like to have with their red. Red of any nature does tend to fade a bit quicker than other colors and I like to be transparent about that with my clients from the beginning. When aiming for auburn, be prepared to refresh your color with glossing treatments every 4-6 weeks.
Maintenance aside, I’m a firm believer that there is a shade of red out there for everyone! Be patient with your stylist when curating your red because there are a lot of factors that go into creating a custom color and we want it to be perfect but sometimes it takes a few sessions before it’s right on the money!
Have images ready of things you like and also things you don’t like and don’t be nervous! The beautiful thing about hair color is that you can always change it and usually it’s much easier than you’d imagine, just never be afraid to communicate with your stylist throughout the process.

It works really well with any texture. With straight hair, it will have a more edgy look you could wear tossed with some flat iron waves in the front for a softer feel!
