Your skin is your largest organ, so it makes sense that you would be diligent in your care for it. You wash your face every night, apply eye cream like your life depended on it and always wear your sunscreen. First of all, bravo. But before you think you’ve got it all figured out, take a look at these five common skincare myths.
Myth: Apply face creams and foundation in upward strokes to avoid getting wrinkles.
Reality: Oh if it only it were that simple. The good news is skin is elastic–when you stretch it, it bounces back. Even daily repetition wouldn’t be enough to create a wrinkle. The creation of a wrinkle requires that stretching of the skin to occur over a prolonged period of time (yep, sleep can do it). And here’s a little beauty bonus for you: it is actually better to apply your foundation in downward strokes. That way you’re not fighting the direction your hair grows in and your application looks smoother.
Myth: Hot water and steam open up your pores.
Reality: If you’ve been operating under this assumption you aren’t completely off the mark, but that’s not exactly what’s going on here. Much like how you can’t shrink the size of your pores, you can’t open and close them like doors either. The heat from steam and hot water softens hardened sebum in pores, allowing for deeper pore cleansing and easier extraction. But beware; washing your face with piping hot water can strip the skin of its natural and much needed oils, leading to dryness and irritation. And extractions are best left to the pros.
Myth: You should switch your skincare regimen regularly as your skin adapts to the products you use.
Reality: Been using the same night cream for a decade or so? Feel free to keep on slathering. You skin does not adapt to products any more than your body adapts to healthy diet. Salmon and Brussels sprouts don’t stop being nutritious just because you eat them on a regular basis. It stands to reason that your skin may not improve at the same rate it did when you began using a product. After you’ve started to see an improvement, the changes might not be as drastic but that’s because your skin is already in a better place.
Myth: Makeup with SPF provides sufficient sun protection.
Reality: The built-in SPF in your makeup is really a bonus. A little extra protection never hurts, but think about how much sunscreen you need to cover your face, chances are you’re not using that much foundation. Nor should you be. Moreover, even on a cloudy day, the sun’s UV rays reach the Earth. Use a product with broad-spectrum protection under your makeup to block both UVA and UVB rays.
Myth: Greasy foods lead to breakouts.
Reality: We’ve all been told stay away from French fries and other naughty foods to ward off acne. While a healthy diet certainly can’t hurt your complexion, no link has been found between greasy food and acne. In fact, the only foods that have been linked to breakouts are milk and diary products. If your skin is causing you trouble and you can’t seem to find the culprit, trying switching to non-diary milk and cut back on the cheese.
