How To: The Messy 4 Braid Updo

Calling all women who can’t quite get the hang of braiding! My name is Jenny from Confessions of a Hairstylist and I have THE braided look for you. This look is simple, chic and can work well on both long or mid-length hair. The braided trend isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, and this easy enough updo is your ticket to trendy.

4-braidUpdo

1. Start with dry hair. Add some texture to your tresses by using a mousse or a spray gel while blow drying so that it roughs it up a bit. You want to avoid having silky hair for this one. Here I used a 1-inch curling iron to add a little wave to my hair as well.

2. Take the section of hair in front of one ear, start braiding and stop when you are about 2/3’s of the way down to your ends. Secure with an elastic and repeat on the other side.

3. Split the remaining hair in half. Clip one side away.

4. Starting with one of your back sections, apply a regular or fishtail braid.

5. Stop braiding when you get down to about 2/3’s of your hair. Secure with elastic.

6. Now, gently pull at your braids. I suggesting spraying a medium hold hairspray to the braid and use a massage-like movement to pull the hair slightly out.

NOTE:This is why you don’t want to braid your hair to the ends. By leaving a little bit of hair out of the braid, you allow your hair to loosen and not fall out of the braid. When you pull the hair out a bit, your elastic will slightly slide down to the ends. Repeat the same massaging technique to all four of your braids.

7. Starting with your two back braids, take one braid and drape it across to the other side of the head. Secure with a bobby pin or two.

8. Repeat on the other side.

9. Take your front sections and drape the hair going towards the back and across to the other side.

10. Secure with a bobby pin and repeat on the other side. Gently pull a few strands of hair out in front to create softness.

11. Hairspray and detail the look out by pulling on a few strands in the back to give it a sexy, tousled feel.

Finish this look off with a firm hold hairspray and get ready to turn some heads.
