Long Pixie for Black Women with Relaxed Hair

Q&A with style creator, Erika Parham-Cormier

How would you describe this look?

My client was wearing a really short pixie and now she’s growing it out a little. We are keeping it short but more length in the bang area. She has very thick hair and it is relaxed. I did color her hair a dark brown using Pravana Chromasilk 3N. It’s dark but still natural looking.

What I love right now about her hair is how healthy and shiny it is. I used Aquage Silkening oil before I curled her hair and finished off with Aquage Beyond Shine.

Any advice for someone considering it?

When clients come in wanting this cut, I have to look at their head and face shape and hairline. I will then suggest a cut that’s complimentary for them and we go from there. This cut can be styled in different ways as well. Working with different textures, I’m able to show my clients that they have many options with this cut.

Some can rock curls, whether it’s their natural curls or curls from small flat iron. While others prefer it straight or bumped with a flat iron. When you have a great cut it can be worn many ways. Depending on their texture I would suggest a styling product like a wax, pomade, or moisturizer to help keep their style maintained until they come back to the salon.

Cute Long Pixie For Older Women

How would you describe this look?

This is a long pixie haircut. The best thing about the look is that my client’s color is 100% natural. Her silver highlights made the look that much better.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Understand that everyone has different hair textures. In this photo, she has very thick, coarse hair. Looking at images of hair that best resembles your own could save you the heartache of a haircut that doesn’t suit you at all.

Your hairstylist can usually deliver on your expectations if your reference photos match your own hair textures and types (curly, straight etc) well.

Sassy Long Pixie For Thin Hair

Owner / Hairstylist / Makeup Artist @ Halo Salon in Rossville, TN

How would you describe this look?

I call this style an undercut pixie. This is one of my favorite styles that is modern and fresh but also very versatile! She can style it straight, wavy, switch her parting, tuck it behind one ear for an asymmetrical look. Short hair doesn’t have to be boring! We kept the color soft with a root smudge after highlighting to a pale blonde which adds depth to her short hair.

Any advice for someone considering it?

If a client is considering this look, I always look at hair texture, head shape, and talk to the client about styling. If you are looking for a twist on shorter hair that’s anything but boring, this cut is for you! It has the shortness around the nape and ears with the length of the top and crown. It’s perfect for changing up the usual!

Textured Long Pixie with the Side Shaved

How would you describe this look?

This pixie is “non-traditional.” It’s a little bit edgy and yet still feminine. The longer fringe gives this cut a softer look, and the color screams feminine. It also fades out to a gorgeous pastel pink! The edgy part of this cut is in the back. It features an undercut (from sides to back) that shapes the hairline into a “V” shape. The coolest thing about this haircut is the styling because it’s very versatile. This look can look great with waves, sleek, or even textured!

Any advice for someone considering it?

The maintenance for this cut and colour can last about 8 weeks. The colour can go longer if you’re working towards a pastel colour. Because the fringe is longer, it can be suitable for even round faces! It does suit most face shapes. My favorite way of styling this cut is by using a paste. I love using Free Mind Mud by O’right. It’s a flexible, matte finish paste that helps bring out all of the texture in this cut without feeling heavy or crunchy. The product allows for restyling after working out or even wearing a hat!

It’s a great cut for someone with an existing pixie who wants to change things up. Some people think you can only do so much with short hair but that’s not true! This cut is short but it has lots of different elements that make it stand out versus the traditional pixie.

A Long Androgynous Pixie

Q&A with style creator, Courtney Chaput
Hairstylist @ Rockwell Salon in Elkhorn, WI

How would you describe this look?

We decided that this look fits under the “Lixie” category: Long Pixie

My guest has no fear when it comes to how short, so we decided to do an undercut (not only for the edgy feel it gives, but that’s the part that annoys any short haired client as it’s growing out so the shorter the better around the hairline I say!)

The coolest part is how much texture this cut has. I’ve had many guests request “no thinning shears” because of a bad past experience. But I say do your research, trust your stylist, and don’t limit their tools and skill set.

Any advice for someone considering it?

My thought process on any style or look is if you love it, it will look good on you! Sure there are some cuts that by textbook wouldn’t go with a face shape, but if you love it I say do it! Your confidence with your look means more than any textbook answers. Hair grows, and if you never try it you’ll never know.

A short cut like this requires a lot of maintenance in the salon but so much ease at home. Because of all the texture, styling should be a breeze. A little texture paste (Pureology: mess it up) or texture spray (Amika: Un.Done texture spray) and you’ll be on your way!

Long Pixie For Thick Hair

Q&A with style creator, Michelle Kellogg
Hairstylist @ Life Is Suite by Sheri & Michelle in Wellington, FL

How would you describe this look?

This is a textured long A-line pixie haircut using mainly a razor and texturizing shears. The great thing about this is that it always looks done whether it’s freshly washed or on day three. Before my client always had her hair up in a bun and now she has a finished look all the time while still feeling pretty and stylish.

Any advice for someone considering it?

I love the versatility of this! You can take this to a multitude of levels. With this cut and the right products, you can have several variations. Creating a soft wave and some texture wax you can achieve a beachy lived in style. If you’re trying to accomplish a sleek, smooth, and refined appearance, you can flat iron it with some serum and heat protectant. Or you rock it out with a straight edgy textured style using texture wax or defining creme. Don’t forget to finish it with a good soft holding hairspray.

Messy Pixie with Long Bangs

Q&A with style creator, Rachael Jernigan
Stylist @ Genesis Salon in Mobile, AL

How would you describe this look?

I’ve always loved asymmetrical pixies. It’s the perfect way to have an edgy, short cut without sacrificing all of your lengths. Many of my clients want to go short without looking too masculine, and I believe this is a great option. There is so much versatility with this cut. You can wear it sleek and polished or full of texture and tousled.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This is a relatively low maintenance cut without necessarily having to “look” low maintenance. I would recommend this cut to a client who has no problem dedicating a small amount of time to styling and is willing to use a product to achieve their desired result.

With this particular client, it only took maybe 10 minutes to dry and style. She has natural curls (as well as an adorably vivacious personality!), so we accentuated her curls with a flat iron, and finished with Redken’s Wax Blast.

Wax Blast is also the perfect product to use on this cut with straight hair to add texture and get that edgy look. My personal favorite is using Redken’s Quick Tease at the root for height, followed by Wax Blast for texture. It is a look that can translate well no matter what aesthetic and suits a wide variety of face shapes.
