Any client who sits in my chair and says she is thinking about a color like this, is usually not a surprise to me, only because deep down I can see the fire in them! In most cases, when the following is explained and they are still on board, I am totally down for a transformation like this! Yas queen! Let’s do it!! The advice that I would give any client, as I did this client in particular, is that this look will take maintenance in all aspects. First and foremost if we decide that this is the look for the client, we need to talk about hair care. Shampoo/conditioner and styling products, as well as heat protectants, are a must for this look. Without them, I cannot guarantee the longevity of this color service.
Next would be maintaining the actual color service itself. If the client wants to keep this color maintained, I will need her to pre-book her appointment 4-5 weeks out to ensure that this color stays vibrant through the ends and that her regrowth is taken care of.

How would you describe this look?
There is one word that automatically pops in my head when I look at this picture, and it’s freedom. When I look at the picture of my client’s hair it gives me such a “freeing” feeling. One is because she finally stepped out her comfort zone with color and two because of the way her hair is just carelessly blowing in the wind.
It’s so hard to choose my favorite thing about this picture. I’ve been working really hard the past year to grow as a stylist and really work on my styling, my color techniques, and my photography. I love everything about this picture because I feel like it really showcases how far I’ve come.
Any advice for someone considering it?
If I was having a consultation with someone and they brought this picture as a goal photo I would first tell them the red color on the ends is a semi-permanent and requires a lot of maintenance. I use Pulp Riot so I always recommend their color safe shampoo and conditioner and to wash in cool water. You also don’t want to wash your hair every day.
I would recommend them to use Pulp Riot’s dry shampoo between washing to also help them extend the life of their color. They must always use a heat protectant and low heat when styling their hair, preferably 300 degrees and below.
This kind of color draws a lot of attention as well so if you don’t like the attention I wouldn’t recommend this color. It’s also not great for people with thinner hair. ombrés or color melts work best on thicker hair. This color is also not good for someone who tends to swim a lot because the color will strip out of the hair very fast with the chemicals found in a pool.
As far as the roots go we matched her back to her natural color for lower maintenance so depending on the person and their skin tone I would recommend staying with a color close to their natural one.

How would you describe this look?
I may be a bit biased but red hair is one of my favorite colors. I love everything about the red family which is why I love this look. This look is fun but safe: we have the deep natural brown root that softly blends into a deeper red then into that fun pop of red on the ends.
This look offers a lot to clients who want some fun color but aren’t quite ready to dive all the way into a bright bold color! I finished this look off with soft layers that allow for just enough movement whether she wears it straight or wavy. I’m a sucker for good waves!
Any advice for someone considering it?
I take many things into consideration when helping my clients choose a color within the color family they are looking for. Aside from my clients’ skin tone and eye color, to ensure their color will complement them overall, I also consider their personality and profession, as some reds may be outside of some employers image policies. I also consider hair length and I personally love ombré styles on medium length to long hair with soft layers for movement, as it really enhances the color.
Whenever doing reds on clients I also like to inform them of the upkeep and care that go along with it as they may need to adjust their hair care routine to accommodate their new color. Bright reds are beautiful but without the proper care, they may fade or dull faster than a more natural tone. Professional shampoo/conditioner and styling products are a must.

How would you describe this look?
I like to call this ombré something like a “Red Velvet Melt”. It definitely has that rich creamy violet/red depth to it, and I feel like it complements Leah’s intense Hazel eyes to a T.
As far as the cut goes, Leah has to wear her hair up a lot for work, so in turn, she needs a low maintenance style. We did a decent clean up on the ends while also cutting long layers around the perimeter. However, Leah is totally fabulous and we just felt like she needed a little something more. Enter those fabulous thick blunt bangs! I mean could they be any cuter on her? I happen to love a cute pony and some bangs!
Any advice for someone considering it?
Honestly, every stylist needs to remind her client that basically any shade of red is going to require maintenance. Luckily for Leah, her natural color isn’t too far off from the Joico cocktail I whipped up (5XR & 5RM). Leah also happens to have fabulous hair, and it usually obeys me in whatever I’m trying to do with it!
We’ve done everything from platinum blonde to unicorn shades on her, and she’s always rocked it! I do have to say, at least for the blunt bangs, I feel like that suits a fuller round/oval face a tad bit better. A slimmer face can drown with bangs these thick and blunt. Like I have mentioned previously (and this shouldn’t be a surprise to us), we can be in love with bangs one day and hate them the next, so prepare your guest for that fact.
Bangs are maintenance – they require styling daily. We can get over them quickly. However, they can also be our best friend. Currently, I’m sporting them as well, and I haven’t washed my hair in like 5 days, but my bangs have been washed daily and are on point!

How would you describe this look?
I did this color on my little French work friend/colleague, Johanna! She wanted something different and I felt red would bring out her inner ‘wild side!’ Red is a fierce and strong yet classy color.
It’s pretty high maintenance but totally worth it. I assess the hair as I’m coloring it and tailor the aftercare products to not just their color, but hair type/texture and porosity! The first product I absolutely swear by is my best friend Olaplex! It doesn’t just help with keeping the hair in top-notch condition, but it also helps to lock in the red to prevent fading!
Any advice for someone considering it?
Using the balayage/ombré technique allows the hair to grow out without those nasty roots!
A lightener or bleach isn’t needed every time, so it’s maintaining the condition in each visit. It’s usually just a toner (demi/semi-permanent color) that is applied to the hair every month or so to deposit the red back into the hair.
Reds are usually more popular in trend around Autumn/Winter time, but I personally think that doesn’t matter! There is nothing more refreshing when a client is feeling spontaneous and allows you to create something purely off your own imagination, than just having a certain cut or color because someone else has it! It feels amazing knowing a client has that much trust in you! Plus, it makes it that bit more fun and exciting!

How would you describe this look?
To me, this is a fashion color ombré with permanent red on top and silver at the bottom – which comes to my favorite part – the multitude of upkeep options this style provides.
My client likes to switch it up every now and then but always sticks to her red roots (as she suits red very much). Having light blonde ends which we toned silver for this do gives her the opportunity to have a different color on the bottom half of her hair every time we touch up her roots. This combination was definitely my favorite so far, as it’s such a strong statement color.
Any advice for someone considering it?
High contrast colors with the stronger color on top require few washes, ice cold washes, and professional color shampoo for the color to stay where it belongs. Unless you’re willing to freeze your head and invest in some good shampoo and conditioner (my favorites for colored hair are Olaplex No.4 and No.5 or Joico Color Therapy Shampoo and Conditioner) and use dry shampoo for days on end, this look won’t be much good for you. However, if you’re determined to do so, high contrast ombrés like these are so much fun and very expressive, and they can be combined with almost any cut and be adjusted for any color combination.
With this specific look it will take some time to place the ombré higher up when it’s growing out as the red is a permanent color and will require more than just one removal step for it to lift to a platinum blonde again, however my client is very understanding and we usually come up with a gorgeous color for the transition.
Long story short, this hairdo is definitely for you if you’re happy to invest time and money in your hair and it is a major accessory of yours! It’s fun, turns heads, and so versatile in the long run.
Subtle Red Ombré

How would you describe this look?
This look is a blended red ombré or color melt on an asymmetrical bob. The coolest thing about this look is that it’s edgy but also very classy and can be worn on any age.
Any advice for someone considering it?
This color is great for someone with naturally dark hair because it will still blend as the color grows out since it starts dark and gradually becomes lighter toward the end. My client is in college and wanted red but I knew she wouldn’t be able to get back to the salon so this will still look good even if I don’t see her again for a few months.
The cut is a slightly asymmetrical A-line bob. It is best for clients with straight hair or clients who have the time and ability to style their hair straight. The asymmetry would get lost on very curly hair but can be styled with a curling iron to have a little bit of smooth curl. I love that any age or personality can wear this look.
It’s a little edgy but not too much so that it could still translate to a professional setting. It is very important to protect the integrity of hair in order to keep the red looking fresh so I highly recommend using a moisturizing and color safe shampoo and conditioner as well as a heat protectant and serum when styling.

I always warn clients that reds are the fastest colors to fade, so if you want to ensure the vibrancy of the hair you need to make sure that you use salon quality shampoo (I love Kevin Murphy because it’s sulfate free) and not to wash your hair in hot water. Another thing to consider is coming in every 6-8 weeks for a toner refresh to really keep the ombré looking as good for as long as possible.
