How would you describe this look?

This is a silver lilac amethyst. I love the different tones and dimensional shades I was able to achieve. I finished with a soft layered cut and smooth blowout followed by a loose “lived in” wave.

Any advice for someone considering it?

If you’re thinking about this color for yourself, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, the canvas has to be blonde. Sometimes this takes multiple sessions to achieve a pure blonde that reflects the color beautifully. Not that you can’t achieve it on darker blonde tones, they just come out more subtle and not as bright.

Two, get ready for cold showers! Cold water helps to preserve fashion colors. Warm or hot water can make the tone fade much faster.

Third, these colors last about 8-12 shampoos. Washing the hair less frequently with a color-safe sulfate-free shampoo will also help maintain the look. Dry shampoo will be your new bestie!

Lilac and Lavender

How would you describe this look?

This is a fun pastel purple lob I styled with soft waves which are all the current trends for this spring/summer. Styling was done using the GHD curve wand.

What I love about this look is that there is a multitude of different shades of violet that shine through, giving the hair a dimensional look. Lobs are my go-to haircut for clients who want something easy and versatile.

Any advice for someone considering it?

To achieve this look your hair needs to be a lighter shade. Pastels are always a fun idea because they don’t last as long as brighter colors and fade out of the hair beautifully. So if you want to be a bit adventurous and try different colors then pastels are the way to go because they are not permanent.

Waves are on trend and can complement a casual or glamorous look while always being sophisticated. I always like to use a setting spray when I’m doing waves so the client gets the most longevity. My go-to product is Goldwell thermashape 2 in 1 spray.

Lilac Pink

How would you describe this look?

We like the contrast in tones of this look. The cooler tones of the lilac through the roots offset the soft peachy pink of the ends making it pop without overwhelming the client’s skin tones. The choice of colors signifies the start of our southern hemisphere’s spring, taking the client away from the darker tones of winter and preparing them for the lighter tones heading into summer. The soft waves and braid help push the style to the ethereal, creating the feel of fresh blooms and eternal sunshine with the airiness of a spring breeze.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This will suit clients who want a softer look for the spring with colors that won’t require a change in makeup as the color tones are gentle on most skin tones. It would suit clients who are bubbly or fun-loving and who doesn’t take themselves too seriously. Maintenance is a little more work than a full head but not too much. A specific shampoo and conditioner should do the trick, but we recommend our clients to limit hair washing to a maximum of twice a week.

Pastel Lilac Balayage

How would you describe this look?

This look is a fun and bright lavender pastel color. Sometimes lavender can be more muted or silvery, but this is definitely brighter. Also, you can tell she’s still platinum, so it doesn’t make her feel like her hair is dark. The soft wave makes it classier and put together and shows the shine in her hair.

Any advice for someone considering it?

You definitely have to be blonde. Sometimes even if these colors look dark the hair has to be lightened to a certain level to achieve a specific tone. I think is definitely fun for anyone to experiment with these colors especially because they are not permanent and they fade a little with every wash.

You have to be open to enjoying every step of the fade. Eventually, it will wash up to your blonde underneath. All colors fade a little differently and purple is usually the safest way to go because it’ll leave you with the best blonde color when it’s all faded out. The hair definitely has to be healthy enough to be lightened to achieve any pastel color, but if you’re already blonde it’s a fun way to change it up somewhat temporarily.

Lilac on Brown Hair

Q&A with style creator, Trixy Reed
Barber / Colorist / Stylist @ Hartzo Hair Shop in Portland, OR

How would you describe this look?

This is a simple textured long bob, with Pulp Riot Nevermore and lilac ombre. We styled with a simple round brush blow out.

Any advice for someone considering it?

When you are going for a pastel color you need to remember that it takes time! This was 6 months in the making to get her to this color. When you have vivid/fantasy colors, you need to remember they fade fast, so you want to heat style as little as possible. Use the products recommended by your colorist, and most importantly be ready to wash your hair in cold water!
