These 23 Sexy Inverted Bob Haircuts Are Totally Trending Right Now

If you’re looking for some of this year’s most popular inverted bobs, then you’ve come to the right place! But first… what is this cut?

The “inverted bob” is a bob that’s short in the back and gradually gets longer towards front. It typically has stacked layers in the back and has a more dramatic variation between the length in the back compared to the front. Because of this gradual transition, it’s also referred to a graduated bob in different parts of the world.

This bob really brings an edgy twist to the popular short cut by keeping the hair in front at a longer length while smoothly decreasing towards the back. A fuller and more bodied shape at the nape offers a flattering look to anyone who is craving for volume without having too much bulk. Its gradation in length allows it to be a highly customizable style for every face shape, hair type, and even for any age! You can pair it with a fringe to balance an oval or heart-shaped face, paint it with highlights to accentuate the dimension, or add lots of layers for a stunning texture! Tailored to fit anyone’s lifestyle, it boasts as a low-upkeep and an easy-to-style haircut.

This is an iconic cut that transcends time for women of all ages, shapes, and personalities. Stir up your locks and get ready to be trendy all season-round with these latest photos of inverted bob cuts!

Very Short Inverted Bob

How would you describe this look?

I started with the full global color application for the dark ashy blonde look. For this look, I wanted to keep the bob classic but still modern and chic. I shaved the back a bit and then textured the top for hair to have a smoother blend.

The sides are little longer than the back and come on an angle. I blow dried with the round brush and then used a flat iron to make it even smoother. It’s very easy to style for the client every day, just a little bit of product and a round brush blow dry will be great.

Any advice for someone considering it?

You should understand that it’s a short haircut and will need much more maintenance. The cut will need to be done every six weeks in order to maintain its shape. Also, hair cannot be tied back, so one should be ready to keep hair open all the time.

As far as face shape is concerned, this look is suitable for all face shapes except for someone with very small face circumference, since it will cover the sides of face and jaws and will make face appear even smaller.

The products I used to achieve this look is The Smoothing Lotion by KMS and a thermal spray serum section by section as I used the flat iron.

How would you describe this look?

This haircut is a great cut for someone who readies to go short but is too afraid to go for a classic pixie haircut. It’s an edgy and versatile twist on an A-line bob. The texture I created in this haircut allows the hair to be worn either super sleek or airy & voluminous.

Any advice for someone considering it?

First thing, I always tell my clients who are considering any sort of cut that is above the shoulders is the maintenance. Many people think short hair means less maintenance, which is not always the case. In order to keep the length, shape, and style of a short cut, scheduling a trim every 6-8 weeks is needed.

Having shorter hair myself, I find I have to consistently blow dry my hair or style it with a hot tool to feel “put together”. But not to say that that is a “con”, it just depends on what your lifestyle and hair texture calls for.

At the end of the day, you should have the mindset that you wear your hair and your hair does not wear you. Chop it off! Go for it! Love it!

P.S. As far as face shapes go, this haircut is most suitable on oval and heart-shaped faces.

Inverted Bob with Bangs

How would you describe this look?

This fun, funky style was inspired by the look of fallen autumn leaves. Fashion color was applied to most of the head, while pieces of her natural level, in her crown, were left out to create dimension. That, in combination with the textured nature of the inverted bob, I love how the look simulates the effect of something you could pick off the ground this time of year!

When styling all that was needed was a rough dry and little texture spray. Love how everything came together to create on the cohesive concept!

Any advice for someone considering it?

For clients considering a look similar to this, there are two main things to consider: hair type and maintenance.

For instance, this particular client has very fine, straight hair. The added texture in the cut allows her hair to fall and move how she wants without excessive styling. Clients who have very thick, coarse, curly hair would rock this inverted bob much differently. Those clients may struggle more in the morning, spending extra time styling to achieve the same effect as a client with fine, straight hair. Also, for those trying to grow out a pixie, this is a great transitional style to avoid the inevitable shag that the grow out process entails.

The maintenance is also something to keep in mind when considering a fashion color like this. Regular touch-ups are required, as well as home care. To keep it fresh and maintain longevity, clients need to wash their hair less often and with cooler water, use sulfate-free products, and heat style with lower heat.

How would you describe this look?

The color is a dark chocolate base with a subtle caramel highlight that is perfect for fall. The cut works really well with her petite bone structure and the amount of hair she has. For ladies with finer hair, this cut gives you that volume you have been looking for. It’s a great cut for all hair types. For this style, I love to use Sebastian’s dark oil for her blow out and finish with Sebastian’s microfiber for styling.

Any advice for someone considering it?

It’s low maintenance. Start the day with your business look with a very easy transformation to your nightlife with the microfiber by Sebastian. Upkeep the cut and color every 4-6 weeks to always keep it that fresh and perfect look!

Medium Inverted Bob

How would you describe this look?

This look is an inverted bob with a little bit of texture through the bottom and a warm red all over with blonde highlights throughout.

Any advice for someone considering it?

If you’re someone whose go-to hairstyle is a ponytail, this look is not for you! My client was okay with the idea of just pinning the sides back out of her face when she needs to. She also has naturally curly hair, and the cut also looked great when she wears her natural curls.

Shoulder Length Inverted Bob

How would you describe this look?

The angled bob is one of the most requested cuts I do. I’ve done everything from subtle to dramatic angles. This particular gem of mine is a more “in between”. Not too short, not too long. The greatest part about this cut is that she can add volume to the crown area and back to give the illusion of a more longer front.

For her color, I add to her already natural blonde by doing baby lights all throughout. She has recently been getting vivids in the mix. Pastels are her favorite, so far! When paired up with her beautiful blonde locks, it’s such a fun pop of color!

Any advice for someone considering it?

Go for it! It’s such a great cut for almost any type of hair! If a client has naturally curly hair, you’ll want to cut it just a bit longer than where the length desired will be. This is because when dried and curled, it will be shorter. I also do this for those with thicker, more coarse hair. Soft layering through the back will help add volume and texture, as well.

When thinking of face shape, the longer front allows you to customize the look for each person. You can leave the front face-framing pieces straight and sleek, or add a bit of an angled bang.

Styling this type of cut can be super fun! Loosely curled, beachy waved, or straight, it’s all possible! It’s so versatile that it can be made edgy and dramatic, or soft and elegant, depending on your needs.

I always use a leave-in conditioner and a frizz tamer on my gems before drying. All my styles, whether straight or waved, are done with a flat iron. Great tools are also key to that gorgeous final look!

Inverted Bob with an Undercut

How would you describe this look?

When I thought about this haircut, I thought of the woman who wanted to demonstrate security but did not want to lose femininity. Without a doubt, the best thing about this haircut is the full shape, little layers with an important graduation, which gives a strong look but at the same time the sensation of lightness. It is a more rock and decisive reinterpretation of one of the history haircut: the “bob”. With this look, you have the opportunity to wear a “cult” hair look but in a modern way.

About hair color, an eccentric coppery, I wanted to give even more character to the final look. Obviously I “played” with the color gradation using up to 3 different copper tones, applied in sequence on roots, medium length and ends, magically joined together thanks to the “ColorMelting”. The styling is really simple – the full shape gives the right fullness to make everyday management easy.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Just do it! Without thinking too much! Character, practicality, and style are the strengths of this look. It is suitable for every woman, as long as she wants it. I do not really like to necessarily assign a cut shape to a face shape, as it would be reductive and penalizing both for the hairstyle and for the woman. The only rule is to feel it over, just feel it.

A tip I can give for a look always at the top is that for drying hair, as well as having used a shampoo and conditioner suitable for your hair type, thin or frizzy, colored or sensitized, apply a pre-fold product and proceed with a very slow hairdryer drying. By removing the hair dryer’s beak and at a medium speed, you should only with circular movements start to dry the hair. When they will be almost completely dry with a hairbrush, accompany the hair in the desired direction without forcing too much. Finally, obviously, in the case of thin or frizzy hair, a good styling product is essential for an optimal result. All that remains is to try and do it.

Inverted Bob for Thin Hair

Q&A with style creator, Rachel Lott

How would you describe this look?

This subtly inverted razored bob is textured and airy, featuring detailed weight removal that allows for volume at the root and movement in the interior.

I love the lightness of the ends in contrast with the slightly heavier full fringe, and the subtle balayage highlights that lend an added dimension to the cut. I smoothed this client’s naturally wavy texture using a lightweight mousse and flat brush blow drying techniques.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Keep the perimeter length above the base of the neck and shoulders, as once the hair breaks the shoulder, the shape of the cut appears to change completely. The length of the face and neck themselves will also play a role in tailoring the cut to best suit the client.

The airy effect of this razored bob requires managing the density of the hair with considerable texturizing and weight removal. Clients should be prepared for their hair to feel tangibly lighter, as leaving too much weight in the ends will change the balance of the cut.

Overall this is a versatile look that can be air dried with a salt spray to play up the hair’s natural texture, or blown out smooth using an oil or cream for a more polished feel. To complement a straighter option, I’d suggest a thickening spray for lift at the root and a light texturizing hairspray to shake up the finished style!

Inverted Stacked Bob

Q&A with style creator, Jasmine Houck
Stylist / Colorist @ Element 5 Salon in Charlotte, NC

How would you describe this look?

This is a textured inverted bob. I love that it is soft but also edgy, full and still sleek. Styling this cut I used volumizing products along with a lightweight smoothing product. I used a round brush to create lift at the base, but kept the ends straight, this creates that soft yet edgy look I love.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Go for it! There are so many variations of the bob, from classic to extreme. It’s all about working with your stylist to find the look that is right for you. This cut works for textures from straight to curly. I always teach clients how to style their hair depending on their own texture.

This style is usually easy for clients to do on their own at home. Don’t be afraid to ask your stylist for tricks and tips on styling, and make sure you take home the right products. They make all the difference!

Neck Length Layered Inverted Bob

Q&A with style creator, Hope Alexander
Hairstylist @ Studio Elle in Brooks, AB

How would you describe this look?

I’d describe this haircut as a layered A-line bob. I love that the style is simple and classic. This look is a look that, I feel, never really goes out of style.

This cut looks amazing with both a smoother and straighter style as well as a curlier or more textured style. This plays off her natural highlights beautifully and her hair texture just really worked well for the look.

Any advice for someone considering it?

A client considering this look should remember that this is a high maintenance hairstyle! To keep it looking fantastic, they will need to style their hair daily as well as maintain regular trims to keep the shape of the cut. This is definitely not an ideal style for the typical “wash and wear” client.

On the flip side, this style is really easy to work with. When done properly the cut is so easy to style and works with almost all hair textures and face shapes!

Wavy Inverted Bob

Q&A with style creator, Heather Lank
Hair Designer / Master Colorist @ Gypsy Soul Hair Studio in Savannah, GA

How would you describe this look?

This haircut was done using a feather razor. I created a full outline of a blunt inverted bob and then went into the interior of the cut and did some shatter layers from her crown pulling everything forward and customizing it to her face shape and a nice side fringe to complete the cut.

The greatest thing about this cut is that it is versatile for almost any hair texture. You can wear this haircut naturally curly, beach textured, and straight as a board. It’s a perfect on-the-go style.

For her color, I did a full foil highlight using small sheer slices and weaves. I also added a few baby lights around the face. I created a shadow root with Redken shades 5na and toned the rest with shades 9T and 9p and clear.

I styled her using IGK Good Behavior and did a quick round brush blow dry. After she was dry, I just picked up sections here and there and did a loose wave with my flat iron. Finished her off with Kenra texture spray and Lanza healing oil hairspray.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This is the perfect hairstyle for a woman who loves to stand out. Whether you wear it natural or styled out and curled, it will turn heads. It’s taking 2 classic styles, the blunt bob, and the stacked bob, and putting a modern spin on them.

Make sure you don’t skip the texture spray, as it will create the dimension and definition. Any face shape can wear this especially heart-shaped and round.

This cut looks amazing even as it grows, so embrace the growth and cheers to amazing hair.

Inverted Bob for a Round Face

Q&A with style creator, Kayla Blake
Hairstylist @ Park’s Edge Salon in Greensboro, NC

How would you describe this look?

I call this: rooted vanilla macchiato inverted bob, styled with a 1 1/4 in curling iron alternating directions with curls, broken up curls with a wide-toothed comb to produce that edgy textured look.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This particular haircut and color go great styled straight/sleek. It also can be jazzed up with a few curls/waves, using products such as Kendra’s dry texture spray #6, Kendra’s shine spray, followed by Kendra’s volume hairspray #25 to hold that exceptional look.

This particular haircut and color should be kept up on 4-6 week appointment base just to ensure, consistency in color, as well as the haircut not losing its shape. Face shape is huge when considering cuts and color. My client has more of a diamond-shaped face, so it promotes and accentuates her face shape with the length in the front of her face.

She’s also a client who loves to style her hair. This is particularly a “get up and go” haircut. It takes some effort. Also hair color plays a huge role when selecting color my client has naturally darker features, so using a level 5n at the root melted in to add some contrast to offset the blonde potentially. Washing her out was definitely the way to go in consulting her on color.

Perfect Back View

Q&A with style creator, Gabriella Exner
Hairstylist @ Urban Legends Salon and Spa in Chemainus, BC

How would you describe this look?

This is a sleek smooth inverted A-line bob. The sharp clean lines are striking. I love that it is a timeless classy cut yet it still has an edge to it. Sometimes women shy away from shorter styles because they think they can only style it one way, but she naturally has curly coarse hair and loves to wear it smooth, curly, natural, or rock a modern top knot!

Any advice for someone considering it?

It may vary on hair type. If you have finer, smooth, flat hair you may want to use a root booster/mousse/volume spray and blow-dry it with a round brush to help give it a little more body and lift to achieve the nice rounded curved bob.

If you have curly hair you will want to blow dry it smooth to help get those stubborn kinks and curls at the roots and around the hairline. Then finish smoothing with a flat iron. You will need a thermal protector to help shield your hair from the hot iron. You can use an oil to help moisturize and smooth out any flyaways and finish with anti-humidity hairspray to help hold it.

This is a versatile cut and can be worn curly or straight, but it can take some work to smooth it if you have curly hair. So keep in mind you may have to spend a little more time smoothing it out in the mornings!

If you already have straight hair it will have easier maintenance. This cut is great for round face shapes because it help elongates, and works well with most face shapes. If you have a longer face shape you may want to stray away from the inverted bob and have a classic chin-length bob.
