How would you describe this look?
Lisa has fine (but plentiful!) natural blonde hair with lovely natural curls she likes to embrace. A curly shag like this really maximizes her curl pattern for volume and takes minimal effort to style. The loveliest thing about Lisa’s curly shag is that she has a curly fringe too! It really makes the whole look a little edgier.
In the winter, even natural blondes need a little boost, so I balayaged her hair to bring out some bright pops in strategic spots. She lifts very easily so balayage works for her. If you have darker hair but want dimension, look for inspiration pictures that look more like your own natural color. Don’t get stuck on terms like “balayage” or “hair painting” which happen to be buzz words right now. They are both just techniques used to create highlights – not all techniques are right for achieving the lightness you want. Trust your stylist to choose the method that is right for your hair. Bring those inspiration pictures. We’re visual creatures. We love reference photos as a way to see what’s in your head and gives us a starting point during the consultation.
Any advice for someone considering it?
The best thing about this look is that it is flattering on almost everyone! Most curly girls already have a stylist they trust, who can customize this shape based on their curl type and the facial features they want to highlight. If a curly fringe freaks you out, this cut can totally work without it.
Styling is easy – I recommend using products like Deva Curl Low Poo and One Condition or a conditioning cleanser like Oribe Cleansing Créme for Moisture and Control to cleanse and moisturize hair.
Keep your styling product in the shower! I find that when I apply my curl creme on my own hair soaking wet, it distributes more evenly, and I make less of a mess if I do it in the shower. Just flip your head upside down and scrunch in the product, then scrunch again with a microfiber towel to remove excess moisture. If you have a curly fringe, you’ll benefit from twisting the curls down into position. You can air dry, sit under a hot dryer, or use a diffuser to dry. Shake it out, dry scrunch, or massage the roots when it’s dry to make the curls more lively. Experiment! You’ll find a method that’s best for you.
Finer hair like Lisa’s benefits from a lightweight curl creme like Deva Curl Wave Maker or Oribe Curl Control Silkening Creme. Those two products have the right balance of moisture and hold. If you want more volume, you can use a mousse: Oribe Curl Shaping Mousse is great.
If your hair is more coarse or has a tighter curl you may need something heavier for control paired with a leave-in conditioner for hydration. The Decadence line from Deva Curl has a great leave-in and their Styling Creme or Super Creme both give hold and definition. I’ve tried a lot of different product lines on myself and on my regular clients – I always end up back with Deva Curl or Oribe. They just work.
When it’s time to refresh curls on the second or third days – but you’re not ready to wash and reset, you can reactivate the product with a light mist of water or a hydrosol (I like Lavender or Rosewater with Glycerin since it’s a humectant) and a good scrunch. Fuzzy ends or sections will benefit from a bit of oil scrunched through (like, 5-10 drops maximum). I really like plain ol’ jojoba oil. It’s almost like the oil our bodies naturally produce, so our hair (and skin, and nails!) will absorb it more easily. Argan oil and rosehip oil are also great options (and have great properties for the face too)!

Any advice for someone considering it?
The biggest thing you want to consider when lightening your hair is hydrating and heat. Stick to regular deep conditioning treatments and styling methods like the curly girl method. Always remember to diffuse on low heat, and products are everything! Lately, I’ve been loving Miss Jessie’s baby buttermilk for some serious moisture, and the jelly soft curls for some soft hold and shine.

The loveliest thing about this look is the longevity it provides. As your roots grow in, the color will evolve between appointments, giving you multiple blonde looks and no pesky line of demarcation.
Any advice for someone considering it?
You first have to find the right hair stylist who specializes in color and texture and can guide you with the best way of going through the process. Secondly, you have to be extremely consistent with the preparation of your hair and aftercare using professional products that are specific to your curl type.
Healthy curls will always bring healthy color. If your curls are not healthy, you should consider putting off color until they are. You must be consistent with haircuts and trims, what you are eating, and staying hydrated. In regards to lifestyle, do not use heat, braids, tight extensions, or anything that can compromise the integrity of your curls. When it comes to personality, I think anyone can rock this kind of look, you just need to have confidence and embrace your natural curls!
