Caramel hues hit the perfect balance between the rich shades of red, blonde, and brunette and possess a bit of each, showing an impeccable mix of everything under different kinds of light. It’s essentially used for its brightening effect and its amazing ability to create a multidimensional color especially when it’s against a rich, dark base.

Deep, olive skins, as well as fair complexions with cool undertones, are best complemented by warm caramel shades. Maintenance depends on how you’ll wear this glamorous color, and remarkably, there are lots to choose from!

Caramel Brown Balayage

How would you describe this look?

I did a balayage ombré on top of my client’s natural hair color (dark brown) to create a multi-dimension effect of highlight with caramel. The best part about it was that the client can maintain their natural hair color while looking trendy and fresh.

Caramel color is different with from others where it last more longer, and with the balayage ombré technique, the client will still look good even after new roots grow and come out after a few months. This technique also requires a wavy kind of styling and hair that is layered to create more dimension and silhouette.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This look is suitable for natural or colored hair – from black, brown to light brown. With the balayage face framing technique, you can customize your client’s caramel effect according to their face shape and skin tone.

This color is suitable for a client who wants something that lasts more longer and is always on the go (long vacation) under the sun, on the beach, and etc. The only things client need to consider is the products to maintain the look like a beach wave spray, a leave-in conditioner, and natural hair oils.

How would you describe this look?

This look was actually created by a color correction. This guest was a natural level 3 and had wanted to be lighter and brighter but her previous stylist had simply done an all over bleach. The guest wasn’t happy with the brassy, grow out so she put a box of “red” at home color on herself.

First, we took off about 5 inches of hair and did a color extractor to get rid of some of the red. Then I balayaged highlights and lowlights throughout her entire head to give her the depth and dimension her hair was missing.

By wanting to keep it low maintenance, we did a subtle shadow at the root and kept the tone in the warmer and richer caramel family.

The great thing about this look is how well it will work with her busy lifestyle all while looking fresh and fun!

This process took a total of 4 1/2 hours. I made sure to use Olaplex every step of the way to help maintain the integrity of her hair. So, I would plan for setting aside a good amount of time for this appointment. Also, this look will last you about 4 – 6 months with minimal maintenance of trims, glosses, and treatments in between.

How would you describe this look?

I really like this look because of the softness of the color! Balayage is a low maintenance and effortless color – once you have your color done, it can be maintained for months afterward with toners (given the right home care) and you don’t have to worry about being back in the salon every 5-8 weeks to top up your regrowth.

I think caramel tones are really popular because they suit a broader range of root/base colors – especially on people with darker hair. Caramel tones allow for a really nice subtle variation, and warmer tones reflect the light more – so the hair looks healthy and shiny (in comparison to some other colors – ash tones, for example).

I kept the cut really simple to complement the color – I cut it dry to give more texture to it. Because this client has a longer face, I kept the fringe/bangs longer to widen the feature points where I lightened it.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Balayage is great for people who want a low maintenance color – however, the first appointment is often a big one. It’s a great color that can be personalized for your hair and face shape. The products the stylist/colorist recommends in the salon are the best to ensure the longevity of the color – brands like Olaplex, Davines, Kerastase are great to maintain the hair condition and keep your color lasting longer.

Dark to Light Caramel Ombre

How would you describe this look?

I would describe this look as “All the Golden Tones” – a nice golden caramel, transitioned into a creamy blonde with a slight gold undertone.

The best thing about this is how warmth can be present in the hair and not be too harsh or overwhelming. Nowadays, cooler tones are what many people want. What they may not realize is that warm tones done properly can be very beautiful and complimentary to many skin tones.

Any advice for someone considering it?

I love this look for people that still want to be brunette but add a pop of blonde in their life. Having the natural root color melt into a caramel tone allows the color technique to have minimal upkeep while still maintaining the all over lightened look.

How would you describe this look?

I would definitely describe this look as subtle. This was a client with virgin hair who wanted something new and fun without being too drastic. My absolute favorite thing about this look is the grow out. It grows out beautifully and gives her the easy boho vibe she loves! It’s also super easy to keep!

Any advice for someone considering it?

My advice to anyone wanting to lighten their hair is that you should always have the product to keep it looking healthy, shiny, and vibrant. Lightener brings damage no matter what, so a trim or treatment is another must with this service!

Dark Caramel

How would you describe this look?

I describe it as a low-maintenance yet high-end look. We’re trying to get away from her years of black box dye.

The color is for laid back girls who don’t want to maintain their hair color every 4-6 weeks. It’s more for someone who wouldn’t mind going every 8-12 weeks.

The most beautiful thing about it is the warmth her color has. It brings so much more life to her skin tone! (Very fair with bright green eyes)

Any advice for someone considering it?

Prior to blowing her out, I used Oribe products, Royal Blowout for shine and Créme for style on her mids to ends for a little moisture and hold. To achieve the style, we used a 1 1/2″ curling iron. I let those curls cool down a minute and I went in with her finishing product which was Oribe’s texturizing spray with my hands and pieced it out. It’s my personal all-time favorite for dreamy/romantic curls!
