How would you describe this look?
I like to call this color “Black Cherry” because it reminds me of black cherry Kool-Aid. I didn’t want the color to look like one flat color so I used two different colors of a violet red, (a base color balayaged into a slightly lighter shade on the ends) to keep a lot of dimensions.
My client here has very long hair but very fine in texture and wanted to keep her length, so I kept her length and added some long layers to give her a bit more shape while maintaining the density of her hair.
Any advice for someone considering it?
I would recommend this hair color to anyone who is wanting something a bit edgier but still has to maintain a somewhat conservative color. My client wanted something really sassy but she works as a medical assistant and can’t do and anything too “crazy”. So this would satisfy anyone who has a sassy streak and has to reign it in a bit.

How would you describe this look?
In hairstylist lingo, this is considered a balayage-ombré, a gradual blending from one color hue to another. In this case, my client came in with virgin medium brown hair. I did balayage-ombré to lift her to a medium blond and then applied my color. Which is dark plum at the roots to a black cherry at the ends and blended the two together. And voila! My favorite part about balayage-ombré is the blending it’s just so satisfying to see the gradient effect and the movement that takes place in the hair.
Any advice for someone considering it?
My best advice I can give to a client who is considering a black cherry balayage or ombré-balayage, in general, is just do it! It’s perfect for that ideal client who wants something very low maintenance and can be adjusted to fit the clients color schemes, face shape, and personas. The great thing about this particular look is that it grows out so beautifully and doesn’t show lines of demarcations.
However, if you are considering doing color, it will eventually fade out after some washes. But all you need to do is book a color service for your next appointment instead of chemical service. Which puts money in your pocket and who doesn’t want that!

How would you describe this look?
This chocolate cherry balayage is a favorite of mine for my clients who are working in a professional environment but are looking to shake things up a bit. It’s a subtle look that is great for when you are looking to explore the world of fashion colors without the constant maintenance of vivid tones.
The layers in the cut work to frame the color and curling it with a large barrel iron really showcases all the dimension of the hand-painted balayage.
Any advice for someone considering it?
This color and style are perfect for clients who are wanting to change up their look while keeping it subtle. The shape of the cut is easy to style, whatever look you’re going for, and the color is flattering on most skin tones, making it really versatile! I always recommend my clients use a color-safe shampoo + conditioner (Kevin Murphy is a personal favorite) and styling with a dry texture spray is a fun way to add a beachy, tousled finish to any look!

How would you describe this look?
This look is black cherry hair for sure! A rich blend of natural and fashion shades that is perfect for that work-life balance! My client had virgin hair and wanted something new but doesn’t have a lot of time to maintain it. We decided to use Matrix Sored instead of lightener so that it would fade on tone. We then went in with a red gloss, using Matrix ColorSync over everything. This helps to enhance the red and add to longevity. This also adds this amazing red shine to her natural hair.
Her hair is quite thick, so to create movement, I only cut her perimeter wet. The layers are cut with longer shears using a point cutting technique so that I can create “invisible” layers instead of shelves (which she previously had in the past). This gives us movement and thins out the hair. I think haircuts should focus on “feel” just as much as precision. If it “feels” heavy in a spot, I work on it. If it feels balanced, I leave it.
My favorite thing about it is how luscious it looks! It’s so important to have your cut and color balanced!
Any advice for someone considering it?
We used lived-in or off base highlights (think balayage) so that she had time to “grow in” her natural color. This way she wouldn’t have to touch up her highlights very often. We chose to do a red gloss over everything to help with longevity to the red and added shine to everything. From here, it will be easy for my client to come in for her normal 10-12 week haircut and to add another quick red gloss (think 15 min) to revamp her red and add back the shine!
I love the idea of keeping her base natural, especially because she is so dark. This creates less worry about brassy hair! Red hair looks amazing and lives really well at darker levels because of its undertones. As long as she takes care she should have beautiful hair for a long while! Another option for clients with darker hair looking for something different without going dramatic is plum!
It is going to be super important to use a color-safe shampoo – one of my favorites is Matrix keep me vivid shampoo and conditioner. I also am a huge fan of heat protection! This can come in a blowdry cream such as Biolage blowdry lotion (that has heat protection for up to 450 def for up to 4 days) or a spray such as Matrix style link heat buffer. Artificial reds tend to fade quickly with heat tools, hot showers, and incorrect shampoos, so it’s important to be mindful!
