Blue and purple hair is a hair color that combines two cool-toned colors using different shades and intensities of blue and purple. Fashioned by trendsetting celebrities Katy Perry and Demi Lovato, this color combo takes its inspirations from the twinkling galaxies above! This mixture of striking, cool hues produces a superbly balanced contrast that is not too loud – ideal for girls who want to have a major change to their image!
This creative two-toned hair color offers a lot of versatile options that you can play with. You have a choice between going for pastel, soft shades or joining the dark side for rich, night sky hues.
Owning an ultra-pigmented hair absolutely entails commitment! Washing your hair with color-safe shampoos and conditioners, limiting your wash days, treating your strands to hair masks, and regularly visiting your favorite stylist for touch-ups – these rituals are a must to preserve those heavenly colors.
There is nothing more cosmic than getting a dye job using violet-blue hues! Here are some of my favorite trendy purple and blue hair colors!
Silver, Blue and Lilac
Glittery pastel is the new in! Colors as these in one mane take time and patience to achieve but isn’t it so worth it?
Pink, Blue and Purple Galaxy Hair
This is what pastel dreams are made of! Mix magenta, teal, and lavender colors for a rainbow-inspired look.
Electric Blue and Bright Purple
Neon is now! Eclectic indigo hues looks much more edgier on a sort cut.
Black, Blue and Purple
This is black and blue done right by colorist Diane. Those colors just peeking through jet black hair works wondrously.
Blue and Purple Ombre
Mystified and just so magnetizing! The shine and the big curls complete the wow factor of this style.
Green, Blue and Purple Mermaid Hair
Surprisingly, the green adds a nice touch of earthy color to the vibrant blue hues. What a brilliant way to flavor platinum hair!
Teal and Midnight Blue
Some shade variation to kick up the seasons! Going from dark blue roots to sapphire ends brandishes one awesome ombre style!
Peekaboo Blue and Purple Hair Underneath
Shake up your hair with hidden streaks of violet and blue. Works well for this blonde hair that highlights the hidden colors inside the mane.

How would you describe this look?
I would give this color the name “radioactive” given its glowing nature and neon shine. It’s an unconventional split hair technique. My favorite thing about it is the uniqueness and the vibrancy of the color.
Any advice for someone considering it?
Understand maintenance. Creative colors are more on the high maintenance side and require attention every 6-8 weeks. The color will evolve and fade in that period of time but there are products you can use at home to maintain maximum vibrancy – custom colored conditioner would be a perfect example. Also, be ready to turn heads because this look is sure to do that!

How would you describe this look?
One of my favorite things about this look is although it’s an “unnatural” color, it’s still classy and “work appropriate”. My client works in a professional office and is complemented all the time on her style while staying true to a color that is as fun as she is.
Any advice for someone considering it?
My advice to anyone looking for a fun hue is to embrace the fade. A lot of times, people shy away from vivid colors because they feel the maintenance is higher than a natural color, but the fade out and different shades you get in between visits is my favorite part.
Royal Blue and Light Blue

How would you describe this look?
This look is a color melt or what I like to call a royal blue color melt. It starts with a level 1 (blue-black) shadow root. Then, blends into beautiful indigo in the mid-shaft area. Finally, finishes into a pastel smokey blue. My favorite part about this look is that it’s bold and edgy but very soft and pleasing to the eyes because of the blend through the entire hair.
Any advice for someone considering it?
I feel a lot of people can pull off this look. My advice to anyone that is wearing this look and trying to maintain it is to definitely wash or rinse with cool water. Also, before washing put conditioner on your ends that will protect the ends and keep them light, just in case if the vivid blue decides to run through. Preferably, use a sulfate free shampoo and conditioner. I suggest Sexy Hair and their Keep Me Vivid line. Other than the wash, this is a fun and easy look that’ll turn heads!
Blue and Purple Dip Dye

How would you describe this look?
I’d describe the look as galaxy hair – the vibrant blue and rich purple tones remind me of some of the beautiful images taken from space. I completed the look with a long layered cut and soft mermaid waves.
Any advice for someone considering it?
My advice for anyone considering vivid hair color is to have a maintenance routine in place. Prebook your touch up appointment, always use a sulfate free shampoo, and wash less! The more you wash your hair, the faster the color fades. Using a high-quality salon brand shampoo and conditioner will help maintain the color, and dry shampoo will be your best friend!
The best thing about these colors is they flatter many skin tones and can be adjusted for anyone. Having this color will get you attention so be prepared for tons of compliments!

How would you describe this look?
When someone comes in the salon and shows me a picture like this of hair color or colors, I immediately think of fantasy colors. That is what I call them. This is a very fun and girly look.
I love that the colors blend well together and when you wash it they won’t mix and look bad. I love how you can see the length and the blues from root to ends of the hair. I decided to curl it in this picture so you can see the dimensions of the colors when it’s straight it’s very cute also but curled you can see the colors more.
Any advice for someone considering it?
I think there are no age restrictions – my client here is in her 40’s and she looks amazing! It is a hard color to keep because since they are fantasy colors they will fade out faster. Always wash your hair with lukewarm water and use color safe shampoo (Joico K-Pak Color Safe Shampoo).
Another tip is not washing it daily. I recommend dry shampoo (Dove Dry Shampoo) to make your hair oil free until your next shampoo. In order to get this color, you need to be pretty blonde so most likely you need to get your hair lightened professionally for less damage to your hair.
I recommend using Argan oil, coconut oil, or Moroccan oil to keep it hydrated after lightning it. Also, hydrating hair masks once every 2 weeks is recommended. This color fits any personality especially if you are fun and are not scared to try different things.
Lavender and Light Purple

How would you describe this look?
I love creating a signature look for each client. This is a beautiful deep lavender/periwinkle shade, paired with a long layered, textured haircut. On my client who happens to be my sister, Keeley, I think that it goes great with her pale skin tone and green eyes. Growing up I had fun different colored hair, it’s nice that it is more acceptable now. We have so many clients asking for it at the moment.
Any advice for someone considering it?
To achieve this look, I do a heavy balayage or babylights on my client’s hair first and then do an overlay of this color. You do have to start out with a very light canvas first, and it does not last very long in the hair. I always recommend using a professional color safe/sulfate free shampoo and conditioner.
Cool water does help the color stay in a little longer, but you would typically have to see your stylist every 4 to 6 weeks for the upkeep of this color. It does fade out of the hair very even and nicely while keeping your blonde toned well. It is always a good idea to talk to your stylist about this color first the maintenance and if your hair could and all the process to get pastel colors.
Metallic Purple and Pastel Purple

How would you describe this look?
From a sun-kissed balayage to a metallic unicorn, this look takes a step into the wild side. Using Guy Tang’s Mydenity (6DL + 8 DL) we were able to give @glamketo a new fresh look for her to express herself! I love using these deeper violet colors because the hair doesn’t need to be lifted to bright blonde before applying the color. We were actually able to achieve this look by simply applying this straight over her level 8 balayage, and the results were amazing!
Any advice for someone considering it?
If you are considering this type of look, keep in mind the maintenance and proper at-home care. Colors like this are considered high-maintenance and depending on your current color history can take several hours to achieve. To help the look last longer talk with your stylist about using sulfate-free shampoo and conditioners, washing with cold water, and using less heat on your hair. There are also several types of colored conditioners to help maintain your color at home in between your salon visits.
Unicorn hair is accepted more now than ever before, giving clients a chance to express themselves and have fun with their look! (Even if it comes with a little more maintenance & care.)
Denim blue & dark blue

How would you describe this look?
I love the proportion of dark and light colors. For the ombre/balayage technique, it’s recommended to do some styling like a wave or curl to increase the movement and dynamics of the hair.
Any advice for someone considering it?
Let them understand that the hair needs to be bleached 1-2 rounds to achieve the color (especially Asian hair). The damage caused by bleaching will make the hair drier or even cause breakage.
When we decide to get the ‘colorful’ hair done, the most important thing is the makeup. It doesn’t matter what the skin tone is. Imagine what would happen if you were a warm skin tone and you dyed silver color but without makeup?
The color may not last and fade off every time you wash your hair, so to prevent these problems, I would recommend using pigmented shampoos and conditioners (purple shampoo, silver shampoo etc.).

How would you describe this look?
I’ll call this one “ocean view” with loose curls like waves on the shore. I loved creating this piece. I chose to use yellow to give highlight in key areas to create depth. These direct dyes allow for so much creativity
Any advice for someone considering it?
I do have to let my clients know in advance of the high maintenance that is required for this type of look and the type of products I may have to use. In my experience, I find that the young tend to like the very loud bright colors whereas middle-aged women prefer deeper tones that are still very fun colors and for the more mature I find they tend to choose pastels which is fantastic because they don’t typically last for very long making it uncommitted fun.

How would you describe this look?
I always like to do advanced multicolour for my client, which includes like this kind of galaxy hair colour! It always gives people a new look.
Any advice for someone considering it?
Even you work at the office, you also can try this, because it’s from dark root to multiple colour and the colour not too bright and conspicuous, suitable for any industries. It will bring you more confidence and femininity, and also very suitable for customers who want to challenge multiple colors for the first time.
Denim Blue & Dark Blue
Q&A with style creator, Chelsea Rae Uthoff
Stylist / Colorist @ Plane Jane Salon in Bethesda, MD
How would you describe this look?
What we were going for with this look is a “dark denim” ombré. I did a babylight and some balayage for a smooth grow out. My favorite thing about this color is that unlike a lot of blues done with direct dye, this was done with oxidative dye and will actually fade to a grey tone.
Any advice for someone considering it?
While ombre/balayage generally doesn’t require super regular 6-week touchup visits to the salon, as with all fashion tones this isn’t exactly a low maintenance look. The hair needs to be bleached to a level 9 at a minimum for smokier colors such as this to show up correctly without looking muddy. This can result in dryness and damage. Smokier/ashier tones also tend to wash out much faster.
I usually recommend maintaining with Olaplex step 3 treatments and my favorite product ever: the Overtone Go Deep mask. It’s a deep conditioner that contains color and comes in a pastel, vibrant, and deep intensity for every fashion tone. For this particular color, I would recommend mixing Vibrant Silver with Vibrant Blue in a 3:1 ratio.
Purple Hair with Blue Highlights
Q&A with style creator, Brianna Lynn
Hairstylist @ Classic Cuts Salon in Lancaster, WI
How would you describe this look?
This look has a very bold, “I want to make a statement,” color – something that demands attention as soon as you enter a room. The curls show off the color variation a little better, but it can also be worn straight. Chunky blues thrown into the purple show a little more dimension. I just love how the colors complement each other and create an electrifying look.
Any advice for someone considering it?
This color is, in fact, a higher maintenance fashion color that will fade easily if not properly taken care of. One of the most important things to remember when having this kind of color is to invest in good hair product to help get more longevity from your color. Sulfate free shampoo, such as Matrix Keep Me Vivid, gently cleanses to maintain vibrancy. Try to skip shampooing every day and go for colder water when rinsing your hair. Turn down the heat on your styling tools, use styling products with UV protection, and trust the fade process!
Dark Purple and Bright Blue
Q&A with style creator, Karla Arechiga
Hairstylist @ Salon 5150 in Brea, CA
How would you describe this look?
This look is a custom designed metallic blue and purple hair color. My inspiration for this look was nebulas and galaxies! Nebulas are interstellar clouds of dust in outer space and are just gorgeous to see in pictures.
They vary in colors and have a beautiful iridescent metallic tone, and that’s exactly what I wanted to replicate on her hair. My favorite aspect of this look is the combination of the hair color, the “horseshoe” hair cut and vintage-modern waves. I wanted the waves to add depth to her beautiful dimensional hair color.
Any advice for someone considering it?
Understand the importance of home hair care products and to make sure to make time for color maintenance in their lifestyle.
This look requires sulfate free and paraben free color safe shampoo and conditioners to ensure the richness of the color remains as long as possible. These vivid colors tend to wash out a bit faster than permanent color resulting in more frequent salon visits to keep this look freshened up.
Lilac and Silver Blue

How would you describe this look?
The color is the dark depth of the galaxy transition with the stars and the purple cosmic rays going throughout. I called her galaxy girl when we finished! Decided to go for the sleek look to really show the contrast of the colors.
Any advice for someone considering it?
First thing I do is look at the client’s skin color, eye color, face shape. Then we start talking about maintaining the color. Creative coloring needs to be maintained every 6-8 weeks to keep the color refresh. You also have to consider the hair type and the condition of the hair! Always ask for a 2-year history of the hair to see if the hair can achieve the color the client is looking for.
I always suggest Olaplex when it comes to lightening for the services and taking home products for at home use. Using color-safe, sulfate-free shampoo sold in salons and conditioner! Deep conditioners, also heat protectant to protect color from fading as well. I suggest as well to keep the integrity of the hair done once a week. Remember to always rinse in cold water to prevent fading, and rinsing 1-2 times a week will help preserve color.
