How would you describe this look?
This look is a mermaid color with a purple-y sunset hue along with a beautiful blue ocean hue. My absolute favorite is how amazing and true to tone it came out. One amazing thing about our color line (Pulp Riot) is how you can formulate for underlying pigments and still achieve the color for the desired toned.
Any advice for someone considering it?
It’s always good to go into a detailed consultation when talking to your stylist. You have to talk about your wardrobe, if you wear makeup, and how you style your hair. It’s also important to know your face shape to learn how your stylist can section and layout for the color, so when you look at it at eye level, you see that contrast.
My client, for example, she has beautiful blue/green eyes, so the blue and purple complemented her eyes so well. When trying to achieve this look you have to take into consideration on how you lift up.

How would you describe this look?
My client, pictured below, gives me free reign. Her skin is pale and her hair is Dark Cool Level 4. My favorite part of this look is the bold bang that sits below the brow and frames either side of her face. Her haircut was so much fun creating. Love how her face is like a mischievous fairy. She does wear her hair up but with bangs down, so her ponytail look is adorable with longer pieces she could pull along sides of the face to soften her appearance.
I framed her bangs in black because I thought it would be beautifully paired with her naturally inky dark lashes. My color choice for her hair was beta fish inspired, so I kept dark blue, light blue, and minty green as our main colors with sections of pink, purple, and neon green riddled underneath and around the facial frame.
Melting is the name of the game. I want one color melting into another. A constant ebb and flow, I didn’t want any staccato rhythm in the hair to break the attention away from her bang! My goal was to create movement within the hair that would be calming on top then opening into bold pops of color. The dark blue shadow root helps tremendously with how her hair transitions during her grow out/ fade out.
Any advice for someone considering it?
Anytime a client comes in and asks for rainbow hair, I look for personality first. How does she come across? Is she wide open? Or is she reserved? If she is quiet I would choose pastels and softer tones for that laid back vibe. If she is bold then naturally I would choose vibrant colors! Skin Tone? Is she tan or pale? Do I need to create undertones within her color to pair with her skin tone?
My advice is, whatever you do, start with a clean canvas. I take all my clients to a level 9 or higher. The cleaner the canvas the prettier the fade. I think about the fade more than the initial color. Yes, it is a process to turn into a blonde but so worth the wait especially when this morphs into pastels! Feels good to get compliments 2 months after the color, so do it right the first time!
Some girls come in with no idea. I start them off in baby steps. Popping color through the neckline or a small panel on the side can be enough to make them feel bold and empowered! Hair can literally change your perspective on life! Create an artwork that can be enjoyed not just for you and your client but can bring happiness to those around you.
Sea Form Green

How would you describe this look?
This look is an elegant punk. We wanted to transition her from a high upkeep regrowth line, aka bleach, and tone with magenta to more of low maintenance, sassy dimensional color.
Teri is 100% from Nicaragua and has a lot of dark, thick hair. We always want to give her a cut that takes weight out and adds texture and shape. This was simply blown out using a 2″ ceramic round brush to add volume and bend.
I love how the color draws your eyes and flows so well together. It pulls it away from the “teenager, punky, colored stigma.” Let’s just say the multi-dimensional tones help fade it in different ways and evolves with washes.
Any advice for someone considering it?
The key is not washing your hair as often and washing in cold water and moisturizing.
Investing in good products is a game changer! Use sulfate-free, paraben-free, sodium chloride-free products, less alcohol with styling products, and less heat, as you might melt your color right off!
I also like to send my clients home with a container of that matching color for a color refresh before they have to come back into the salon. I’ve had vivid colors for a lot of my life and upkeep is key to a rich looking color.
I started falling in love with doing bright colors with an elegant spin on it. It gives so much dimension and richness in the color, but it’s realistic when it comes to upkeep. You have a smoother grow out, and who doesn’t love that?!
Bright colors have changed the game, and I’m so happy that people are becoming more opening minded in different businesses. Art, colors, and self-expression flow so well together, so why not embrace it in all ways!
Wave Crashing Silver, Blue and Purple

How would you describe this look?
The best about this look is that we put a lighter shade in the middle which gives it a little something different than your typical ombré look! I love the darker root and the darker end color! It makes this mids pop a little more! Some loose waves and a great little jewelry piece from Pink Pewter makes it even better!
Any advice for someone considering it?
Fashion/vivid colors are my passion and I love doing them on clients, however, they are a commitment. I have a long consultation beforehand, letting them know the ends and outs of at home maintenance. Sulfate free shampoos, like Pulp Riot or Biolage, with minimal washing in cool water, are a must! Low heat settings on hot tools and a good heat protectant (I prefer Kenra 22 spray) before styling are also important. Violet tones generally fade fairly well, so these tones aren’t as much upkeep as others, but prepare to be back in the salon in 6-8 weeks for a retouch!
Deep Blue Sea

How would you describe this look?
This look is one of my favorites to do! It is “Waves of Deep Topaz” and it’s got a deep purple root blending down into a beautiful and dimensional blend of topaz shades. My favorite thing about this look is how I am able to create a seamless blend as the color travels down the strand! It’s a statement piece for sure! I have developed my own technique with fashion shades to give a killer color melt.
Creating texture with my favorite Paul Mitchell curling iron was fun with this client. The topknot is always a beautiful and easy style to teach my clients. All together this style is very versatile and looks awesome on any hair type or length! Mermaid hair is definitely a huge trend that is here to stay!
Any advice for someone considering it?
When having a consultation with a client I always ask important questions. How often do you wash your hair? What type of upkeep is this client willing to do? Do they use styling products and hot tools? This look is definitely not for the average girl. It takes a specific look and style to pull it off! This look takes a lot of maintenance. At home care is super important, so they need to use a sulfate free color care shampoo and conditioner!
To get this style they will need certain styling products like a styling oil, mousse, and hairspray! A good curling iron or wand is key in achieving these beautiful beach waves! I mean how cute and effortless is that topknot? Picking an artist who specializes in this type of color is so important. I cannot stress enough how important it is to do a proper consultation, ensure that they have a portfolio so you can see their work before agreeing to the service. You absolutely want to seek a vivids specialist to achieve this look properly!
Light Clear Blue Hues

How would you describe this look?
It definitely makes me think of a clear blue sky maybe with a couple of wispy clouds especially after styling it the way I did. Also with the cut and my client’s style (she has lots of tattoos/edgy), it really makes me think of old school punk/grunge.
We like to cut the layers pretty short to give it more of a shag look. She also has shorter bangs so with that it definitely gives you more of that punky vibe. That’s my favorite thing about this cut/style – you can make it look a little more polished or you can really mess it up and have fun with it.
Any advice for someone considering it?
This type of color is very high maintenance and can be damaging if you don’t go about it the right way. My client comes every 6 weeks at least with usually about only a half inch to an inch of regrowth. That makes for an easy and safe regrowth application with lightener. For anyone with dark hair, I would not suggest this type of color. For people who want more of the pastel tones, I’d stick with someone who is naturally blonde/light brown.
For anyone wanting something on the blue/green side of the spectrum like on this client, it’s a little more commitment because the underlying green tones can be pretty difficult to remove. Usually any time I do a blue/green on a client I make sure they’re willing to keep it that way for a while. Product wise weekly deep treatments are usually needed due to the lightening of the hair as well as a leave-in conditioner and heat protectant if you’re using a lot of heat on your hair. I wouldn’t suggest this look for anyone who is pretty conservative.
This look is definitely more for someone whose style is more on the punky/edgy side or someone who’s wanting to add more of that look to their style! Although this type of color can be very high maintenance it’s still worth it if you want a look that’s more fun and out there!
Green and Blue Lagoon

How would you describe this look?
This is a half and half color melt look, which is trending right now. For this masterpiece I wanted the green to be the main attraction. I knew that my row to that half and half look was to parted to the side of the green that is the one I was aiming to pop out! By doing that I knew It will totally change the half look and creates a more dimensional look.
Dimension! That’s what I love the most about this look! You can see the different shades of blue and mint and then Green. (I used Guy Tang MyDentity Mystic Blue, Arctic Blue, and Mint of Steel and from Pulp Riot, and also Absinthe and Area 51.)
Then for the styling, I decided to use a 1″ wand to give those beautiful mermaid waves and at the end, I used Shine spray for the final touch. (My favorite shine spray #mystardustshinespray from Guy Tang Mydentity.)
Any advice for someone considering it?
I think a color like this looks great on fair skin but overall if you have a great personality you can rock pretty much anything! Is all in the attitude!
Things to keep in mind when doing color like this is that you need to have a level 10 clean canvas, so I like to make sure I use a pH bonder to protect the hair from the damage of the lightning process (I use Olaplex). A good lightener to achieve a perfect clean canvas is key to have great results (My favorite is Guy Tang Big 9).
These colors take a very long time to achieve so be ready to spend the day with your hairstylist. Also, keep in mind that these colors are very expensive but they are so worth it.
Now I always recommend my clients to use a sulfate-free shampoo and a good hair mask (Pai Shau Supreme Revitalizing mask is my favorite), healthy hair to me is very important! Using the right products after are going to help your colors to last longer.
