How would you describe this look?
This look is one of my favorites! It’s extremely hard to rinse the hair without getting blue on the ends of blonde, usually because of the porosity of the hair. I used clip in extensions to complete this style to give it the extra contrast. The coolest part of this look is the soft fade from blue to blonde and the dimensional tones in between. There is definitely more than meets the eye of this picture!
Any advice for someone considering it?
Blue is a very high maintenance color. It can turn/fade to green depending on stylist’s formulation and/or the level of your hair. Make sure you are ready for the upkeep which is time-consuming and expensive, but totally worth it when you have this dreamy mermaid hair!

How would you describe this look?
The coolest part about this galactic balayage is that it’s a tasteful way to have vivids with less upkeep. With the deeper shades of blues and violets, the hair didn’t have to be lifted that far, which is a great option for clients with darker hair to enjoy fantasy colors! I used Olaplex infused Pulp Riot shades for this look. The hair was originally lifted with Joico Blonde Life, paired with Davines Flamboyage meshes, to keep the hair in place for painting.
The cool thing about this particular fantasy blend was it was actually a revamped balayage I had painted a few months prior! We both wanted to try something magical before she went darker for winter while utilizing the balayage I had already created. On clean hair, I painted galactic colors blending into each other for deep jewel-toned reflection. It looks ever changing in all lighting and braided into different styles!
She has so much hair that tends to get immobile and heavy quickly! For her cut, I like to keep everything soft and flowing. I usually cut my overall shape wet. When dry, I like to slide cut the extra weight out of her most dense areas and point cut the perimeter for a soft, “lived in” finish. I styled her hair with a 1 inch Chi flat iron, taking large alternating sections. I then let her set cool, shook it out and finished the look with Davines light hold hairspray.
Any advice for someone considering it?
The maintenance on this look is cold water with sulfate free shampoo and conditioner. Pureology and Davines are my favorites for a quality protective shampoo and conditioner! I suggest minimal washing with lots of dry shampoo for longevity. Washing the hair as normal, but avoiding a harsh scrubbing over the vivids. Squishing the shampoo through the ends is a lot more gentle and keeps the fantasy colors separate while cleansing the hair. I also suggest using Overtone, to maintain fashion colors between appointments, so they’re always looking fresh.
Light Blue to Grey

How would you describe this look?
This look is a smokey blue color melt or ombré, finished with beach curls. The coolest part about her hair is that this started out as a major color correction. So now she should be able to let the color fade out to a gorgeous icy blonde/pastel blue with a much softer grow outline than she had before.
Any advice for someone considering it?
Make sure you’re going to a colorist who specializes in not only vivids but blondes as well. Having a good foundation color will help the vivid color last longer and fade significantly better! Know that this is a high maintenance color, so you’re not only needing to budget for salon costs, but product costs as well.
Trust what your stylist is recommending for maintenance and home care. We really mean it when we say you need to only use cold water for these types of colors! Some definite musts are a professional sulfate free color safe shampoo and conditioner (my current favorites are Amika Vault and Olaplex No.4 and No.5), deep conditioning treatments and bond building treatments (like Olaplex no.3), limited sun exposure, and definitely no pools, salt water, hot tubs, etc.
Have fun with the journey and enjoy the colors along the way. This particular look may not be an option for a lot of clients, but scheduling a consultation with a killer colorist should be your first step in finding out.

Be clear on the maintenance that is required first and for most. I never recommend this color for someone who can’t handle a day or two of dry shampoo to help preserve the color. It definitely takes a strong, confident personality to pull off a dramatic color, and I’ve found most gals seeking this look know exactly what they want! Pulp Riot and Matrix Socult are my paints of choice. This look was done with a mixture of the two.
Midnight Blue on Short Hair

How would you describe this look?
I love this look. She wanted to be dark with some fun color but not too bold or bright, so I highlighted her. I did a few on the sides and a herringbone section on top with Revlon blonde up and 15 vol. For the base color, I used Revlonissimo demi-permanent color 2.10 from scalp to ends. I processed for 25 minutes, blow dried it and then added Pulp Riot Nightfall all over to create this dark blue look.
I also did cut her hair. I texturized her hair throughout. She has a couple colics, so I used the one at her crown to add more height and pieciness. I love the way it sticks up and it’s kind of tousled. I kept her sideburns pointed for a more feminine look. I love the way it turned out – really dark blue with some bolder blue pops of color
Any advice for someone considering it?
I love short looks! Wake up and add little paste to it to add texture. (I recommend Evo box o’ bollox texture paste). If you do want to upkeep this look, you need to come in for a trim at least for your sides. This color is for people who are extroverts and introverts alike but not always in the corporate world for this blue color. Fashion colors are starting to get trendy so more and more corporate offices are allowing them to be in the workplace.

It requires maintenance because regardless of hair type or texture, it will fade. To keep it this vibrant, navy blue, you would need to come in every 3 weeks for a gloss. Use dark towels at home and sleep on a black pillowcase if you are considering this color.

This look is unique, colorful, and fun! The loveliest part of this color is how bright the colors are! Even though these colors are pastels, I used diluted neons from Pulp Riot hair to create a bright palette of pastels that stand out.
Any advice for someone considering it?
For anyone considering a color like this, I would say that creative colors like these are super high maintenance and costly. For most people, it would take multiple sessions to achieve tones like these and then maintaining it once you got it can be a lot too.
I recommend all my clients to wash their hair once or twice a week at most in cold water, using sulfate free shampoo. Typically, colors like these will only last about 4-6 weeks until you’re back to being blonde because they are so pastel. So, I definitely would not recommend someone to try and get hair like this unless they can keep up and maintain it well.
Deep Blue and Turquoise

How would you describe this look?
It’s a multi-dimensional blue to aqua ombré to give anyone mermaid/unicorn vibes. The multiple tones make it easy to wear your hair in any style, but I suggest curls to really make the stunning tones stand out.

While this color works for any skin tone, it is a high maintenance colour due to the unconventional tones. It isn’t for anyone looking for a low maintenance color.
I recommend this color for anyone looking to be adventurous, but be prepared to take care of it!
These vibrant hues need to be washed in cool water only to prevent it from fading quickly and touch-ups every 8-10 weeks depending on how often you wash your hair. Extra care includes: not washing the hair every day, limited heat styling as heat makes the colors fade faster, and good quality color safe shampoo and conditioner (no drugstore brands). Blue conditioner would be a bonus to have!

How would you describe this look?
Well, first of all, I absolutely love doing blue hair. It can be very tricky depending on the hair/canvas that is being worked on. Any hint of yellow in the hair will fade green once the blue is applied so in order to create a beautiful fade out, I formulated several shades of blue (Pulp Riot with Brazilian Bond Builder) for dimension.
The best thing about it is how many different tones of blue are in the hair. Every style and wash shows variations of blue you didn’t know was there! That is why I styled her as shown, and I love the depth of her base next to the vibrancy of her ends.
Any advice for someone considering it?
Think about maintenance. How often do you visit the salon? Talk about the budget, health of hair, how often you change it. In this particular photo, my client’s hair is platinum. She comes in every 5 weeks for a bleach and tone, then I do fashion color.
If the client likes a little less maintenance, then suggest doing a more lived in style like balayage and fashion color. Either way, always have a consultation with your stylist to ask questions. One major thing to know is that fashion color is temporary! It will fade but finding a stylist who thinks about the fade out is imperative to your fashion color experience.

This cut and color are perfect for someone looking to make a statement. This pastel blue will fade true to the tone and then back to an icy blonde which is perfect for anyone low maintenance looking for a quick change. Keep in mind that the color will only last a few weeks before washing out. A precision cut like this is one of my favorites, easy to maintain and grow out!
Cobalt Blue

How would you describe this look?
I call this a blue ombré/balayage because of the drastic change in dimension and the lighter pieces that come up into the root creating that “painted look”.
I’m in love the smooth fade from one color to the next. I really focused on blending each piece individually so there are no harsh lines. Then finished with a soft curl with a 1 1/4″ Babyliss curling iron just to bring out the dimension. I used the Joico color intensity line. It’s one of my favorites when it comes to fashion colors!
Any advice for someone considering it?
Any time you’re considering going with a fashion color you have to think about 3 things:
1. What condition is your hair in? Most fashion colors need to have a blonde or even platinum background (especially pastels), so your stylist will most likely have to lighten your hair for the color to be vibrant and look right. So is your hair healthy enough to be lightened? This is something your stylist should be able to help you determine.
2. Upkeep. It’s a sad fact, fashion colors tend to fade faster than natural looking colors. If you want a color like this you need to be willing to wash your hair with cold water, use heat protectant any time you’re using heat, use a good leave-in conditioner to keep the cuticle sealed, and to be willing to go back to your stylist and get the color refreshed ever so often. There are also some color depositing shampoos that are great but will only work for the same color hair all over, will not work for an ombré or hair with multiple colors.
3. Money. Because your stylist will need to lighten your hair beforehand, it is considered a multiple step process and will definitely cost more than just a basic balayage or color. Also, as stated before, fashion colors tend to fade easily. So can you afford to see your stylist often and pay for the right products to keep this color fresh and vibrant?
If you’ve considered these three things and think you’d still like fashion hair I say go for it! Life’s too short to have boring hair!
Purple and Blue

This look was inspired by my client who is an art teacher. She changes her color often and is always open to different colors.
This was an all over bleach application. After washing out the lightener, Pravana colors were applied and meshed together at the ombré point. The challenge with this look is that blue hues always fade to green.
