X Stunning Examples of Balayage Dark Hair Color

A balayage on dark hair color is a gorgeous way to use free-hand coloring for a natural and low-upkeep result. Precision and expertise are keys in creating this modern style.

Hair colorists use subtle, feathered streaks to lighten the strands and get an effortless sun-kissed appearance on brunette locks. Celebrities and beauty influencers are taking on this contemporary look because of its remarkably less damaging impact on the hair, especially on dark tones that require more bleaching processes when going through conventional hair dyeing methods. Not just that – it’s also famous for its straightforward benefits of giving your locks amazing volume and dimension in a quick and easy way! What’s even better is that balayages can go on any length and type of hair!

There are truly a lot of variations that this color trend can offer. It’s up to you how you’ll customize it, and what better way to start your journey than scrolling through this collection of some of the best photos of balayage dark hair colors!

Subtle Light Brown to Dark Ombre

How would you describe this look?

For this look, we transitioned her summer locks into a rich brown and caramel balayage. I love the way this look mimics natural sun-kissed tones. The caramel ribbons pop and give beautiful contrast against the darker tone. With her haircut, we did a classic U-shaped haircut. It’s the perfect haircut when your client is wanting to maintain length but have some movement throughout the ends. You can wear this haircut styled straight or curly with ease.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This look is wonderful for clients who can’t always make it into the salon every 4-6 weeks but want to stay on trend. This color is customized to each individual client. You’re able to enhance your facial features and make your eyes pop with a little hair contouring around your face! A balayage is fantastic for someone who is wanting to break away from tradition highlights/lowlights. If you’re ready for low maintenance, this is for you!

How would you describe this look?

This look Is the “lived-in balayage/ombré.” The most gorgeous thing about it is that although it was freshly done, it looks natural and is a very low maintenance style.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Use professional products first and foremost. Conditioning treatments once a month, and professional brand day-to-day products are a must. The balayage/ombré is supposed to look perfectly blended whether hair is straight or curly, remember natural looking is key.

Balayage/ombré can be for every client! Any lifestyle, any personality! However, it should only be done on someone with no existing artificial color in their hair. So basically someone who is brunette and looking to go lighter but doesn’t want to have to keep up with it every 6 weeks! It provides a natural looking lightness throughout the overall hair color, and makes going lighter an easier commitment without the hassle of high maintenance color while still looking beautiful after 12+ weeks of grow out!

Grey Highlights on Dark Hair

How would you describe this look?

The loveliest thing about this look is that the grey highlights help blend this client’s natural greys while still keeping her on trend. Instead of hiding from her greys, she chose to embrace and even enhance them.

For her cut, I kept her layers on the longer side to complement her balayage and allow her to be able to wear her natural waves or style smooth and sleek without taking away from the color placement.

Any advice for someone considering it?

As stunning as it is, grey toned hair is not for everyone. Because of how high-maintenance grey or silver colored hair is, I’m always realistic with clients wanting results like these, advising them on the importance of professional hair care at home such as a color-safe shampoo, blonde shampoo (to fight brassiness), protein and moisture treatments, and heat protection when styling, as well as coming in every 3- 6 weeks to refresh the grey tone.

If the hair is dark, whether it is natural or colored, results like these may take a few sessions to achieve, so it’s important to be patient and commit to the necessary steps to achieve the goal result.

Deep Auburn Red

How would you describe this look?

It’s a sunset balayage with long V-shaped layers and a proof that a balayage isn’t just for blondes! This look is hot for dark-haired babes who want to spice things up! I put a custom color on as an overlay right after her balayage to create these gorgeous tones. This look is beautiful and versatile. If styled straight, it will look blended and natural. When curled or waved, the different tones pop!

Any advice for someone considering it?

This look is not only great for long hair, but medium length lobs look incredible with this type of dimensional color. It’s also a great intro to hair color for brunettes who haven’t yet taken the plunge or are afraid of a shocking change. My cutting and coloring methods bring sophistication and a bit of sass to the woman looking for a stylish change!

Caramel Highlights on Deep Brown Hair

How would you describe this look?

The caramel balayage is so beautiful, as it captures the sunlight and brings out the warmth in your client’s features! Some of my favorite things with this color is the highs and lows of her natural root between the hand-painted pieces. Also using different types of lightener and volumes of developer you can create a lot of dimension within your lightened pieces. I kept her natural root color to keep this very low maintenance for her! Deepening your client’s natural root always looks gorgeous but she wanted the lowest maintenance option. Going off the different dimensional pieces using a variety of long layers and some framing with a razor, you can complement the color, add movement, and create attention to details. Styling this color, I love to finish with beach waves and shine products, curling the hair help to catch the sunlight off different pieces of the hair! When you wear this color straight, you can really see the color melt and watch the caramel dripping down every hair.

Any advice for someone considering it?

For anyone thinking of trying this color technique, go for it! Absolutely 100%! Hand painting and balayage techniques have been around and aren’t going anywhere soon. A lot of people want the beautiful sun-kissed goddess look to their hair, so for anyone wanting to look fabulous, this is definitely an option for you. This style of color is so customizable – you can add dimension wherever you want. The placement of your lighter pieces is a very important conversation to have with your stylist. The lighter pieces and where you can place them can either enhance a feature, bring focus to one area, and big things now with the balayage is the “money piece” bringing the lightened pieces right around your face to really capture and enhance your look!

Style and product for this color are very simple coming back to wanting to look like a goddess. I stress to my clients how important it is to keep your hair healthy. Using a good professional shampoo and conditioner is recommended to every client but where I see the best results to this beautiful color is the prep and finishing products! Using a shine product to finish your hair for the day will also help your color look and feel amazing! The shine products really help to bounce light off the warm tones!

Another factor to think about with this color is your face shape and lifestyle! Talking about face shape if you are trying to make your face appear slimmer or make it appear longer more oval like, talk to your stylist about doing a “money piece” around your face to grab the eye! If you don’t want to draw much attention to your face start your lightening around your shoulders or neck to draw the eye there or keep some of your dark natural root around your face! Lighter pieces grab attention, darker pieces shy away. Talking about your lifestyle and what you do with your hair on a day to day basis is another thing to consider! Do you wear your hair up and back? Do you want to see light or dark when you pull your hair back? Do you style your hair? Are you high maintenance? Do you have time to come to the salon often? The balayage technique is definitely a lower maintenance color option if you don’t have the time to come in every month for touch-ups. Although I always recommend coming in for a color glossing service between your blonding services can help maintain and enhance the tones you want to see in your hair! Depending on how blonde you want your hair to be this technique can take multiple times to achieve. Keep this in mind when thinking of doing a balayage!

To wrap it up, this is an amazing lower maintenance, sun-kissed, goddess-like hair color for everyone out there! Short, long, thin, thick, if you want stunning hair to find a stylist who knows what they are doing and go for it!
