Chestnut brown hair is a combination of the boldness and warmth of reds and the natural tones of browns. This rich mixture of sexy colors produces a shade that is not too heavy and dark and totally livens up a look! What’s unique about this chocolatey hue is its gloss that automatically transforms any hair, textured or straight, to a multidimensional one, making it super easy to style!
Zendaya, Ashley Graham, and Miranda Kerr were all seen rocking this sexy hue on various gala events, and this makes it very hard not to fall in love with it! Balayage artist Macy of Color & Co. Beauty Salon in Florida proves how versatile this shade is with her chart-topping creations on IG!
Your undertone says a lot when looking for the most flattering chestnut shade for you. As the rule of thumb, opposites complement each other – warm undertones go excellent with cool reddish-brown hues and vice versa. Opt for a solid chestnut brown hair for a natural-looking and shiny result or try highlights or an ombre that adds even more definition to your look!
You’ll be surprised how much you can do with this appealing shade, and this updated album of chestnut brown hair will make you fall deeply in love with it!

Darker Chestnut with Blonde Highlights

How would you describe this look?
This look is a warm rich chestnut brown color with caramel highlights. I was inspired by the intriguing browns of the woodsy chestnut tree. The highlights weaving through mimicking the grains of the wood. She has long blended and minimal layers. I styled it with waves using a flat iron and lightly combing through to blend and enhance all the colors. I absolutely love the shine and warmth brown hair consistently radiates!
Any advice for someone considering it?
This warm glossy brown color looks great on olive tone and warm tone skin but can absolutely be modified to be a more cool tone to fit your complexion. This would complement any eye color or face shape. If your natural color is close to this, it can be very easy and low maintenance. The highlights are lower and more of an ombré giving this a lived in and natural look. This will allow more time between hair coloring. This look is great for those wanting a natural but effortlessly polished hair-do!
Ash Chestnut Brown

How would you describe this look?
This hue is inspired by one of the top ten colors that stand out in 2019 New York Fashion Week, Spring Summer Collections – toffee. However, I’ve made some slight adjustments by increasing the ash component, making it closer to a chestnut brown shade so as to eliminate the brassiness that’s prominent in my client’s hair. To give it more depth and gradient, I’ve also balayaged the hair with Goldwell Silk Lift Lightener prior to toning. This creates an illusion of a fuller hair too.
My favorite thing about this hair color is that it’s neither too cool or warm. This means that it is an extremely safe and neutral hair color as it complements almost all skin type and shade. Moreover, maintenance is easy. Just use an ash shampoo (blue) and leave it on for 5-minutes daily.
Any advice for someone considering it?
This is a classic and timeless hair shade that will never go wrong regardless of your profession, personality or fashion style. The 2 types of skin tone that should avoid this hair color are almond and chestnut skin tone. Choosing a hair color that is extremely close to your skin tone and shade will make you look dull and tired. It will not complement your features in any way too.
Lastly, always remember to match your eyebrow colors with your new hair shade.
Medium Chestnut Brown

How would you describe this look?
This is a lived-in color. My favorite thing about Kendyll’s tone on tone hair is that it looks natural and effortless even though she spent hours in my chair! A lot of brunettes tend to fall flat and lack depth, but with some simple balayage and a glaze, they too can have beautiful multi-dimensional color. I gave her a simple round brush blow-dry to accentuate her layers and the style that I gave her.
Any advice for someone considering it?
Go for it! It is low maintenance and easy! With the occasional regrowth touch up and glaze, the balayage only needs to be maintained a few times a year. It is still a professional look without being boring!
As far as the haircut goes, the daily maintenance is really up to the client. A little surf spray and texture cream are ideal for a wash and go look – especially in the hot summer months when blow dryers are out of the question. For when you want to jooj it up or go for a more polished look, I’d reach for a volumizing mousse, blow dry cream, a round brush and go!

How would you describe this look?
What I like about this color is its subtle soft degradation but at the same time being highly technical.
After having used an L’Oreal Pro French balayage, I applied a Diarichesse toner in S24 that gives the style a hot/cool look. I then continued to style the hair with waves achieved using a Babyliss pro styling wand for a soft natural look.
Any advice for someone considering it?
My beauty tip to carry off this highlighted chestnut brown look is to start with hair that has a mid brown base.
This is a look for all women to be sophisticated or casual in their daily lives.
To maintain this look at home I recommend the brand Réflexion by Kerastase. Continuous care leads to a healthy head of hair!

Brown highlights suit any hair color and length. Hair as dark as this would certainly show-off a deep bronze accent.
